OK, Parental Units

I have a friend with a question. I’m not sure he wants a bundle of traffic, so I’ll post it here. We’ll get on with linkage when I get the okee-dokee.

An assignment from my wife, find some shareware or freeware to play net nanny for the kids. Our oldest is becoming aware of the web now, so some filtering of content would seem to be in order. We’re not prudish, far from it, but with all the wacked out stuff out there…

A parent needs to be careful.

I’ve located some, but I wonder if we really shouldn’t invest in a paid for program for better security. Any recomendations would be welcome.

My idea of net filtering is paying the power and the cable-internet bill, so what say ye?

It’s really nice of you to help me out like this AK, you always were a stand up guy. I’m still learning about this subject, so the help is very welcome.

As to traffic to my site, to tell you the truth I haven’t even looked at the numbers. I didn’t when I was with the Three Amigo’s. For me it’s always been kind of a therapy thing. I wrote for you and Neal, our assorted friends from all over, and myself. The actual numbers of viewers was something I never thought about very much. So visters are welcome, you will forgive me if it takes a little while to respond, as I really am semi-retired so I don’t necessarily check it every day. I promised my wife to not spend a huge amount of time on it.

I do thank you for the help.

  3. As I’ve been light on blogging lately, I’ve also been light on reading my favorite blogs … which is why I’ve only just got around to this topic.

Filtering software, I know bupkis about.

Free vs Purchased software, I do have an opinion.

Freeware is the 21st century’s prove of Heinlein’s Law: TANSTAAFL (pronounced, I presume, “TAANSTAAFL”).

Translation: “There Ain’t No Such Thing As A Free Lunch”. See “The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress”.

Somebody went to a lot of trouble to design and build that freeware, and they want something back. Usually, it’s nothing more than some little tracking bot that helps them target you for demographically designed sp*m. It may not be that innocuous; it may be a keyboard logger that will record your loginid and password to your bank account.

Perhaps I’m just an evil-minded old curmudgeon, but I would advise PAYING for software intended to protect your children.

You get what you pay for, on A Good Day.

Don’t feel like paying for software?

You get what you ask for, every time.

    Count on it.

  4. PS:
I’m delighted to see that you’ve got rid of the egrigious typekey or whatever it was commenting software. It was so annoying, I pretty much quit trying to comment to any blogspot that used it.

You probably got it for free, right?
