Self-conquering heroes

I cannot bear to read the words “illegal immigrants” or worse, “illegal aliens,” one more time.

Those of us who own no factories, fields, stores or stocks have nothing of value to sell under capitalism except our labor. We must find those who will purchase our labor or starve. We did not create this system and we do not sign the free-trade agreements that destroy our livelihoods.

Still we are labeled lazy if we cannot find work and called “illegals”, if hunger or persecution force us to cross an imaginary line in search of work without the proper authorization.

I remember when children born outside marriage were called “illegitimate,” as though they too needed documents to justify their existence. That term is now considered a cruel relic of the past. Let’s open the borders and make anyone looking for work a member of the human race, for which no documents are required.
