Low Expectations

Bush is scheduled to deliver a speech to the nation that wil focus on the illegal immigration debate. I’m not expecting anything new or exciting, in fact, what I’m expecting was encompassed by this cartoon I snagged from John at Some Poor Schmuck

There have been stories about the members of our armed services being placed on the border in the news since the middle of last week, but knowing Bush’s stance on the issue, IF he actually sends them there, he’ll give them a half-assed and unclear set of orders for the mission, something ugly will happen, and they will be immediately withdrawn.

The speech will play at 1700PDT here on the left coast and that is about the time I usually wake up to get ready for work, so I won’t be liveblogging it like I’m sure a number of other bloggers will. I may not even listen to it, because I’m not expecting much.

I have been wrong before. Let us hope that this is another one of those time.

The whole things a mess, and it’ll never be solved until the Mexican government can move their country forward. When they can offer their own people something worth sticking around for, decent jobs, good wages, it’ll make Mexico a more attractive option for people who have nothing. When picking fruit and cleaning in America pays better than what they have at home, what does that say about the Latin nations?

I join you in hoping this doesn’t end badly, but I don’t see how it do otherwise AK.

You could argue that improving the Latin American economies was the whole point of NAFTA. But it certainly hasn’t stopped the inflow.

Unfortunately, I believe that the US is the only first-world economy with a significant border in common with a country where large chunks of territory are effectively a third-world economy. In the abstract, you’re right that this is the “root” of the problem. But bringing Mexico into the 21st century is a long-term solution. In the short term, other measures are needed.

With that first-world/third world example in mind, I wonder if Russia has an immigrant problem on its border with Afghanistan? No? Gee, I wonder why not? Could it have something to do with the military guarding their borders?

The President miscued tonight. I was hoping he’d push for the wall and a relatively large troop presence. Nope, didn’t happen. Sigh.
