I get mail

In an email from my co-worker, Paul, came this eBay auction

Titan 1 ICBM Missile Base – Located in Washington State:

Located about 1 1/2 hours from Spokane, 4 hours from Seattle, 5 hours from Portland. 360 degree views. Private water system. High power lines on site. Hardened buildings built to withstand 1 Megaton nuclear blast within 3000 feet. Wall thicknesses up to fourteen feet. 3-155ft tall missle silos. A dozen other large to huge buildings underground. Thousands of feet of connecting tunnels. Paved roads. Security fencing. (see link for pics)

Jokester pricks got the auction voided, so I don’t know what the actual going price was or even the reserve price, but I’m thinking I’d like something like that, except for the long commute.

But what an excellent place for the RNS blogstation!

If you’re feeling up to donating to help move the RNS Washington Blgstation, leave a comment.

In another email from Paul, his nephew, Marine Corporal Daniel J. Redding, who is currently stationed at Camp Habbiniayh, Iraq, sent him an article he got published in the Marine Corp Times.

Iraqi bomb disposal soldiers wor with coalition, learn from IED experts

While most service members do their best to avoid road-side bombs or walk in the opposite direction of a known landmine field, a small community of American troops seek such threats head on and are now training their Iraqi counterparts to do the same.

American explosives ordnance disposal technicians are overseeing the development of an EOD company in the Iraqi Army’s 1st Division, which is based out of nearby Camp Habbiniyah.

The area surrounding Habbiniyah, where many military commanders believe insurgents transit or stage for attacks in Ramadi and Fallujah, has been a beehive of activity for improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which keep the EOD personnel steadily employed.

The 1st Marine Logistics Group’s EOD Company here stays busy responding to 15 – 25 calls daily.

Wh-wh-wh-what? If I were one who reads leftie blogs and listens to the MSM, I would not be allowed to believe this story of the non-existent Iraqi Army and their being too unloyal or incompetent to learn how to defend themselves.

Good thing I’m not an idiot.

Cpl. Redding photographing the EOD explosion that accompanied the article. Notice the video camera in the pic, I’m trying to that from Paul too. He says when he gets it, we’ll get it.

On the Titan complex, They’ve been sold before, don’t know what the going price was however. It housed if I remember correctly about twenty men, so they are pretty big, The propellent was liquid and stored separately from the missile. I hope the tanks were removed. Even in trace amounts, the fuel was highly dangerous and would burn your flesh like acid. There were two accidents I’m aware of, fatalities both times, and once the missile blew up in it’s silo, that was in 1980. A fuel leak.

I jest some, I’m sure they’re safe. Nothing of any consquence would have been left behind.

I have to say too, anyone in EOD has a pair the size of coconuts. It’s the most heroic of jobs. I salute the young Marine, Cpl. Redding. Stay safe, stay careful. Men like him are why we’ll win in the end, why just saying the word Marine makes you proud of your country.
