Apropos of nothing, I saw last week that John Carpenter’s movie They Live was on, so I recorded it on the DVR and watched it over lunch the last couple of days. One of my favorites, if only because of the slow, measured pace at which the the main character discovers the ultimate horror. What happens after that gets silly in short order, but it’s still a great flick, if only for the single greatest fight scene in the history of movies:
The influence of Roddy Piper’s, um, former career is evident throughout that scene.
One thing I noticed on this viewing that I hadn’t seen before: it’s based on a short-short story! The story is Eight O’Clock In The Morning, by Ray Nelson. Click on the link to read it. It’s very short and very good.
I always liked the movi; but I’ll have to read the story too. Thanks for the link.
Haven’t thought about that movie in a while. Thanks for the link ot the short story too. I hadn’t read that one before.
Also the source of one of the all time cheezy-good lines: “I have come here to chew bubble-gum and kick ass, and I’m all out of bubble-gum.”
I saw the movie on Joe Bob Brigg’s old show on TNT. Turned it off during the first break when JBB asked Roddie Piper about the motivation, etc., for the movie, and he said it was the way Reagan’s America was going all fascist…
