You Make the Call

Is Tom Tancredo fakin’ the funk?

When Tancredo hired a construction crew to transform his drab basement into a high-tech pleasure den in October 2001, however, he did not express concern that only two of its members spoke English. Nor did he bother to check the workers’ documentation to see if they were legal residents of the United States. Had Tancredo done so, he would have learned that most of the crew consisted of undocumented immigrants, or “criminal aliens” as he likes to call them. Instead, Tancredo paid the crew $60,000 for its labor and waited innocently for the completion of his elaborate entertainment complex.

My take: He’s not the racist that all the pro-illegal immigration assholes say he is. He was giving the workers the benefit of the doubt and not “profiling”.

I mean, it’s still funny.

  1. Is it just me, or does “high tech pleasure den” sound more than a bit kinki?

Couldn’t they have said ‘man cave’ or home theater/bar or something?

I think that’s the point; they’re trying to make the basement room into something it isn’t to smear Tancredo even more. “High-tech” has the connotation of costing more money, which means he has money to burn; “pleasure dome” adds that flavor of perversity the rich enjoy. And we all know how the liberals love to hate the rich.

Tancredo probably should have asked, but when you hire a construction company, you assume they’ve done the background checks to see if the employees are citizens.

It’s kind of a gotcha thing- your contractor is responsible for checking the I-9’s. And there’s a process to that.

If the employer fires the employee or questions their status, they may face a lawsuit (per my understanding). Similarly, you may face a lawsuit if you assume that their spoken language is an indicator of immigration status.

Aren’t the same libs the ones who refuse to ask for English to be the official language?

But again (particularly if you’re Tancredo and claim to care as much), there are many small shop contractors available (in Littleton, CO in his district) who could do the job. I know a few. Maybe you pay a little more and preserve your integrity.
