I’m behind King Tiger, but in expansion I think it best describes a traveler’s trunk, hinged on the side and opens to clothing hanging, like a portable closet.

I spent much of sixth-grade summer camp reading “The Portmanteau Book” by Thomas Rockwell, which had a cover decked out like a suitcase with all sorts of stickers from around the world. It had a variety of stories, poems, jokes, cool drawings, and all-around subversive material that was quite enjoyable. I’m pretty sure it also included a definition of “portmanteau” for the unenlightened.

It’s still a great book for smart kids that age.

  6. Ahab says:

It’s a combination of two words into one word, an example being the URL of my blog, NRAhab, which is a portmanteau of NRA and Ahab.

  8. Kristopher says:

A leather case, vaguely cylindrical, with straps and buckles to close it up.

    Pre-Victorian era luggage, basically.

I am involved, on occasion, with fur trade re-enacting … I do know some folks who can sell you a new one if you really need one.

  9. King Tiger says:

    “Fur Trade re-enacting”
