The Soundboard: Pound of Sound

Week Six

First, an announcement: I’ll be gone next week, but the Pound of Sound will continue on, though there will be a genre change. Watch for it. I’m sure you’ll all enjoy.

Now, I’ve spent this week training an 18 year old, recent high school graduate on the majority of my daily tasks so that I can go on vacation. Surprisingly, she’s doing rather well. Not quite “Exceeds Expectations” but if her math skills were a bit better, she’d be right up near that level.

One of the things that surprised me was that she doesn’t listen to “The Hip-Hop”. This is a plus in my book, as 95% of the crap currently being put out in that genre is exactly that. I can’t stand to listen to it and refuse to attempt to do so. I’d have sent her packing if she had complained about the selected tunage I listen to while I’m at work.

Last night was the time I listened to today’s album and selected the tunes I’ll be posting today. When I let her know that there’d be jazz first thing off, she said “It isn’t like what (anonymous co-worker) listens to during the day, is it?”

The anonymous co-worker has broken off her radio dial at the most evil station format on the planet: Soft Jazz (aka: Just Shoot Me Music) .

I assured her the anonymous co-worker listens to shit (which is simply an abbreviation for Soft Jazz) and that nothing of that nature would ever come from a set of speakers owned by me.

Having said that, one of the lead instruments in today’s selections is an item most folks associate with music so soft it could be considered flaccid.

The Vibraphone (aka: The Vibes)

But I assure you all that there is nothing flaccid about today’s tunage.

John Patton assembled this quartet together with some very amazing foresight and they absolutely cook.

With Patton on the Hammond B3, Grant Green on Guitar, Otis Finch playing the drums and the famous Bobby Hutcherson playing his Vibraphone, one look at the cover art should tell you exactly how hot this album is.

Listen and buy. In fact, buy two, because Christmas is less than ninety days away.

The Turnaround (6:45)

I think someone was Cadillacin’ to the beach and forgot his sunscreen. Had to “turnaround” and go back and get it.

Latona (7:20)

It is as if Patton and Hutcherson were able to hook their minds together. So smooth you’d think it was (insert favorite Hollywood starlet’s name here)‘s ass.
