The Soundboard: The Group Dynamic

Some folks like the older stuff.

Others only like the last album (posers?).

Myself, I’m only truly moved when this album is played at full volume.

From 1991’s BadMotorFinger

Face Pollution

And

Searching With My Good Eye Closed

And now for a little bit of fun speculatory sacrilege.

I am of the opinion that the Ladies’ Choice, Mr. Cornell, got too Marx for History Major, Mr. Thayil. History shows what Marx does to peoples, and I know Kim’s got too many morals to be able to ignore that.

What are your crackpot theories about the demise of Soundgarden?

Beats me. All I know is Super Unknown is chock full of gems.

If Mr. Cornell is truly a fan of comrade Marx, then my tinfoil conspiracy for why Soundgarden broke up is as follows. Rage Against the Machine realized after “Evil Empire” they were going to temporarily loose Zack de la Roche (I think that’s his last name, the lead singer) as Zack was going on an extended vacation south of the US border to study under his idol Comandante Marcos. The rest of the members of RATM, still wanting a paycheck, fell on a backup plan. Using subliminal messages inserted into “The Battle of Los Angeles” album, they convince Cornell to leave Soundgarden and join with them to form Audioslave, making 3 albums and continuing the paycheck of the non-singing RATM members. When Zack returned from Latin America, RATM reformed, and Cornell broke up Audioslave, saying he didn’t want to be “Chris Cornell and Rage Against the Machine”. Can’t say I blame him. And please ignore pesky things like facts and time-lines, because you know my conspiracy is true. And yes, I know another RATM album came after “Battle of Los Angeles”, but I think that was previously recorded material that had never been released, save for “The Ghost of Tom Joad” single which was sold along with RATMs first commercial video release.

Love RATMs music, hate the content. So sue me. Same with KMFDM.
