RNS Quote of the Day: 11/01/07

Found at Joe’s place yesterday

Civilian semiautomatic assault weapons incorporate all of the functional design features that make assault weapons so deadly. They are arguably more deadly than military versions, because most experts agree that semiautomatic fire is more accurate – and thus more lethal – than automatic fire.

Violence Policy Center – Bullet Hoses – 2003

OK. I’m sorry now, but I’m confused…

My semi-automatic version of an assault rifle is now MORE DEADLY than an actual fully automatic military weapon?

Are they in the process of holding focus groups in an attempt to find a word more scary than “Assualt Weapon” so that when they say this, that the public is at least AS SCARED of my semi-automatic version of an assault rifle as they were when they thought it was an actual assault rifle?

And does this mean that the VPC now has no objections to me, a law-abiding citizen, owning an actual assault rifle?

Dumb question. Sorry again.

I’m sorry, I am just rather befuddled at this time by this group who deserves to be sued into oblivion for their attempt to influence legislation that would deny myself and my fellow citizens a civil right laid out in the second paragraph of the Bill of Rights that is tantamount to them attempting to legislate away my ability to call them wholesale jackasses on the internet, because when the 1st paragraph of the Bill of Rights was written, the authors hadn’t though of the possibility that I may contract carpal tunnel from typing the words “Wholesale Jackasses”.

I’ve just had a long time between reading items so insipidly obtuse as the one quoted above.

Oh, and the VPC are wholesale jackasses.

About time the VPC and others learned that aimed fire is massively more effective then spray and pray. I love my semi versions of Evil Black Rifles (TM) nothing like sustainable aimed fire at 500 meters to put a smile on my face.

Just don’t tell them about “rattle battle” at the national matches… civilian teams (along with the military teams, of course) shooting 25-35 rounds at man-sized targets at 600 yards in 50 seconds with ~90% hits. Then doing it again at 500 yards. (and, possibly, 300 and 200 yards) Tons of fun. Really, really fun. Some of the top military teams have guys who’ll shoot 45 rounds at 600 (in 50 seconds, with a magazine change and shifting to a second target) and might miss two.

Oh, this is with “service rifle” class guns (iron sights, look like M16/M14/M1s, but are match-grade on the inside) from unsupported positions. (prone at 500/600, sitting at 300, standing at 200)

  3. azreel says:

The answer is obvious – legalize post-86 full auto sales to civilians!

  4. Morgan Chaser says:

    Wait, so which is it?

Is the lapse of the assault weapons ban to blame, or are these criminals arming themselves with automatic weapons?

The assault weapons ban has nothing to do with automatic weapons. It was 100% about semi-automatic “scary looking rifles”

Call me when there’s a rise in drive-by bayonettings and deaths caused by the incredibly deadly technique of firing a pistol grip rifle “from the hip!!!1”

  5. s. mcs says:

I just looked at a poll that CNN was doing on “if cops should carry semi auto weapons” almost 30% said no, so im wondering what should they be armed with, bolt action pistols……………

  6. Jose says:

You know, I would love to have these people that writes these articles to actually come visit me. I mean, it’s not the weapon type that kills people, it’s the folks pulling the trigger. And those folks have access to full auto weapons, maybe they need to persecute them to fullest extent of the law.

I really don’t know why I even come on to CNN anymore, they fail to report on the real progress our Armed forces is making. How about reporting some real news instead of taking up bandwidth on the internet with some jibberish?

  7. Zach says:

The lapse of the ban has nothing to do with it. Even during the ban you could buy semi-auto weapons with minimal hassle. Fully automatic weapons were regulated back then just as they are now, with a class 3 firearm license. Civilian semiautos do not incorporate all of the functionality of a fully auto weapons. Often times the only part they may share is the bolt, which by itself does not give a weapon a full auto capability, it requires slight modification to the lower reciever and a different trigger group, i.e. trigger and firing sear. Learn the facts before you criticize other people’s decisions.

  8. Phil LaForce says:

The author of this article is a pretty pathetic journalist. How else do you explain the myriad of factual inaccuracies peppering this piece of crap article? Fully automatic weapons are illegal. They have been (unless one posseses a Class III license) since 1934. They were illegal before the bill banning “Assault Weapons”, and they’re still illegal, after the ban lapsed. Big Time Illegal, as in Felony illegal, complete with lots of jail time if you’re caught with one. Semi-automatic AK-47 clones are not “assault weapons”, and they’re not “high-powered”.
The average bolt-action deer rifle is probably twice as powerful ballistically as the 7.62x39mm round fired by the AK-47 clones the cops in this article are seeing on the streets. There is not an army in the world that would arm “assault” troops with a semi-automatic AK-47 clone. On top of this, these rifles aren’t even particularly accurate. The author of this article got lazy (or worse) and allowed some anti-gun liberal at the Violence Policy Center or The Brady Campaign to feed her a bunch of hogwash, which she blindly re-printed without regard to factual accuracy.

  9. Bob Schools says:

Is it me, or did everyone miss the fact that this stuff is going on in places with high percentages of ILLEGAL immigrants. As for the writer who stated that know one would arm their troops with AK-47’s, all I can say is what planet are you living on..? Former SOF, fighter pilot, lifetime member vfw and dav.

  10. Patrick says:

    THoughts about this article:
    1) agree with your comment of semi-auto is now more dangerous than full-auto
    2) I’m sure all the gangsters are fully abiding by the expired brady bill and buying all their weapons at local sporting good stores (sarcasm)
    3) Wonder how many gangsters/criminals or others have ‘legally’ been shot and killed by law abiding citizens? (who were protecting their family, estate or other)
    4) 62 dead police officers in a year; sorry that doesn’t really strike that much fear in me. thats just barely over 1 a state a year. And how many of those were shot because of the now expired brady bill?
    5) in case you couldn’t tell, i doubt the expiration of the brady bill has anything to do with the upswing. As one mentioned before, the economy is usually #1. The article did elude 1 or 2 sentences that the AK-47s are coming from old soviet bloc countries (and i’d bet china).
    6) And i could care less if a sherrif/office has a M-15/M-14. Fine by me, i will never be on the recieving end of it.

But if a single officer guns down someone running away w/o a weapon or even with a knife, then what? Does that mean all officers shouldn’t carry them? I did read an article of an office in chicago? who is not under suspicion of killing his wife and they are looking at hte accidental drowning of his last wife (yes, cnn article). That being said, maybe some areas need to review their hiring profiling, phycological exams and background checks?

  11. NORM says:

    GOOD JOB !!!
WHAT IS THE # OF COPS KILLED WITH LEGALLY OWNED SEMI-AUTO “AK’S”? (A TERM USED FOR ALL SEMI-AUTO LONG GUNS)
OH YAH THAT # WAS LEFT OUT? WE DON’T NEED IT ANY WAY
    “GUNS ARE BAD” (HEE-HEE)
