Ammo Day in the SF Bay

For this, my first National Ammo Day, at the appointed hour of 1330, I went to Wally World here in the Eastern San Francisco Bay Area. I didn’t see any good firearms-type films that I really wanted to purchase, so I walked up to the ammo counter with the Shotgun News digest issue and a copy of Predator Hunting magazine.

I was pleased and surprised to see that I had to wait in line to make my Winchester white-box ammo purchase!

Cleaned ’em out of the 600 rounds of 20-gauge Winchester they had left, and they were already out of .45ACP, so I picked up their last big box of .38 Spl.

No reaction from the salesfolk except to helpfully suggest that I get a cart to carry the stuff to my car. Stupidly, I failed to heed that suggestion. The kids in front of me picked up 100 rounds of 12-gauge, and 100 rounds of .22 Stingers; the older gent behind me was asking about a case of .270 as I manfully struggled to carry everything out without wrecking my back.

I don’t think my fellow 1330 PST patrons were necessarily aware of Ammo Day, though. Most didn’t seem to be buying to stack it deep; they were going shooting! And the salesfolk were pretty distracted sorting about 12,000 rounds of 12-gauge they had just de-palleted. Did I mention this store is just across the freeway from our local gun range? Anyway, it was gratifying to see this much activity at the ammo counter on a Saturday afternoon.

(This being California, it truly is just an ammo counter. Wal-Mart stopped selling firearms in my state some time ago. Grr.)

Anyway, Happy Ammo Day to all!
