Eagle Scout Project

Mine was building a set of horseshoe pits in a Corvallis city park. I like this guy’s project better:

Shooting Range Eagle Scout Project

Of course, at that age I’d never fired a gun, didn’t know much about them, and would have been astonished to learn that there was a fairly active firearms community in Corvallis and Albany. Heck, they even have a machine-gun shoot!

I missed out.

A Uniquely American Problem

At least according to Michael Moore-On.

From last week

An 18-year-old loner obsessed with guns killed himself and wounded 11 people after storming his old school.

Police found the gunman’s body lying in a smoke-filled classroom after he had run amok with two sawn-off shotguns, injuring a pregnant teacher, a caretaker and pupils.

Five of the wounded were in a serious but stable condition.

“We do not know whether the attacker died because of the explosives or whether he shot himself,” state prosecutor Wolfgang Schweer told reporters.

“He was a loner who was severely unhappy with his life. The statements he made could be interpreted as pointing to a spectacular suicide,” Schweer said.

“He had two homepages and he also left behind a letter.”

The websites, which were shut down by police following the attack, featured pictures of the black-haired teenager posing with rifles fitted with telescopic sights.

He had also posted video footage of himself running through a forest, firing a gun, in a sequence entitled “Good-bye Humanity”.

Wondering why you haven’t heard about this story across the MSM newswires?

Let me just finish the opening line for you then.

An 18-year-old loner obsessed with guns killed himself and wounded 11 people after storming his old school in western Germany with explosives strapped to his body.

But the European states are supposed to be a happy-land for everyone and nothing bad with guns ever happens there!

More proof that if someone wants a gun, they’ll find a way to get it, no matter the laws or the cost.

Not my fault

Sorry about the lack of posting yesterday, everyone. I got caught up in a Bermuda Triangle of sorts. Let me explain.

After waking up late from my turkey slumber to teach a class (my TA was mysteriously absent the day after Thanksgiving to cover), I had to catch a flight to Los Angeles so that I could go see my nephew play Notre Dame.

Yes, David was correct to guess that John David Booty is a reltaion of mine, though just as I am called JT at family gatherings, we call him JD.

So I catch my plane, which landed in Las Vegas to drop off over half the passengers (I usually fly straight in, but not today), but we never got airborne again due to something mechanical. So there were 200 plus people, all trying to rent cars or catch a connecting flight out of LAS/McCarran, which turned out to be a fools errand. Luckily, I was able to connect to a rather lovely acquaintance of mine who was able to loan me one of her cars.

Which is where I spent most of my Saturday morning hours; on the road. I finally arrived in the mid-morning, giving me just enough time for a couple hours of sleep before heading to L.A. Memorial Coliseum. I get to my seat only to find that I am not sitting behind the USC sideline, but behind the Notre Dame team. I was disheartened a bit, but as the game warmed up, I found that not all was lost; I was sitting behind the ND Cheerleading Squad.

Long story short, I was recognized and ended up handing out two scholarships later that evening. What is a Masters in Bio-Engineering worth if you have to live with an under-developed posterior?

I’ve got some good photos of the game, though I doubt that anyone here is interested in them. I do believe that you all are more interested in my post-game pics.

Like this one (sorry about the quality, but I didn’t know I would need to bring my waterproof camera to LA).

Oh, I spoke to JD after the game to thank him for the ticket. When I told him where I had been seated, he let me know that said placement was on the direct orders from the USC Admin – they demanded that if I were coming to the game that I was to be as far away from the USC Cheerleaders as possible. Something about me being a corrupting influence?

I told him I didn’t mind and congratulated him.

And because David guessed correctly as to my whereabouts, here is a pic of Miss Clarissa, my friendly LV friend with the car. It is from her student days in the dorms of OTI. Which reminds me, I do need to update my album when I thank her most graciously later today.

We’ll call this one “The Booby Prize”.

Inexpensive Aerial Surveillance

…er, I mean, Aerial Photography (“AP” to its devotees). An R/C plane, a digital camera, and thou equals these very kewl shots.

I know the photographer personally. A great guy, a true Hero of the Cold War (no, I can’t say what he did) and a pretty good amateur photographer.

They can rhyme it

They know the words “Fair” (whenever they cry about discrimination) and they lop the “O” off the end of Cairo and pronounce their US propaganda arm as “CAIR”. Heck they even demand that their men wear facial “Hair”.

If they can pronounce those words, how come they don’t know how to “Share”?

As the largest student group on campus, the Muslim Students’ Association has made its presence known in student politics. Former MSA vice-president Muhammad Ali Jabbar is heading up the RSU, thanks to support from the MSA. The group has monopolized use of the multifaith room, putting the true meaning of the room’s name in jeopardy.

Through its renewed fight against Islamophobia, the MSA has also been criticized as being increasingly polarized and turning the RSU’s attention mostly toward Muslim issues. Smaller religious groups with less influence have been left wondering when their needs will be addressed.

A variety of religious groups on campus have said they have felt uncomfortable trying to use the multifaith room.

Eric Da Silva, president of the Catholic Student Association, says the group looked into using the room for mass but was told by RSU front desk staff that the room was “permanently booked” by Muslim students.

My only guess is that it must be the silent “E” at the end that screws them up. Lord knows they don’t know how to be silent (Just like children; Give them an inch and they’ll take a mile).

Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself.

The Soundboard: Outside the Rock Box

Back in 1987, when I was in junior high, Hip Hop/Rap was getting bigger by the week. Even waaaay out here in the elbow crook of America, kids were starting to talk gold chains and Adidas. Just the year before, Run-DMC had teamed up with Aerosmith for their hit “Walk this Way”, helping mainstream Rap to the masses.

However, metal was not going to die very easily, nor without a last laugh.

So it was with great satisfaction that I purchased an vinyl copy (which was copied onto a cassette) of an EP from speed-metallers, Anthrax.

It contained six tracks, three of which were different versions of the same track, a hellacious cover of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and two other “included” tracks (which weren’t too bad in themselves).

We were all 14-15 years old, so attention was focused on the title track. A mocking mix of Rap and Metal with all the makings of a staple for my collection.

So, for your enjoyment after you get home from being jostled about in the stores, I give you

I’m the Man – Anthrax

You should really just buy this EP. Try here first.

Today’s Outrage

As is well known, the left would be nowhere if they weren’t something to be outraged over, and today is no different (and neither was yesterday).

Today’s outrage is focused on Mitt Romney. It seems that GLBT activists are outraged that he cut the funding for suicide hotlines which were focused towards GLBT youths. (Caution: A reader has warned me that there are ads/pics at this link that may require you to read “Alphabet of Manliness” on the can to wipe them from your memory)

Hmmm, I’m thinking about the ‘marriage’ debate. “For Me, But Not For Thee” is what the GLBT community is outraged over. Yet, with this issue, they want to claim that there is a difference between persons of the GLBT persuasion and everyone else.

If you click on the above link, you can see that the first commentor posted this exact same question; Why can’t the GLBT folks use the regular suicide hotline? Watch what happens.

If there was only one standard, life would be too easy.

I don’t like Romney, I don’t trust him on firearms and I don’t trust him to not get the country swallowed up by some twisted healthcare scheme. But his ending of special programs for the GLBT community, which demands to be treated “The Same as Everyone Else”, was a good thing, even by their own stated standards.

There’s no such thing as a free lunch.
