Maybe we all have.
A couple weeks back, I posted about the uniform clothing company Cintas suspending employment for any and all employees who couldn’t provide verifiable employment info in California.
Folks stopping by here hailed Cintas and I said I was proud to be wearing their products at my place of employ.
I’m still proud to wear their clothes. But I now need to find a way to write about how I want to help a certain governmental offical pull his head out of his ass without sounding like I want to hang him from a lamp post.
A Mississippi Democrat in line to become chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee has warned the nation’s largest uniform supplier it faces criminal charges if it follows a White House proposal to recheck workers with mismatched Social Security numbers and fire those who cannot resolve the discrepancy in 60 days.
Rep. Bennie Thompson said in a letter to Cintas Corp. it could be charged with “illegal activities in violation of state and federal law” if any of its 32,000 employees are terminated because they gave incorrect Social Security numbers to be hired.
“I am deeply troubled by Cintas’ recent policy change regarding the Social Security Administration’s ‘no match’ letters,” Mr. Thompson said in the Nov. 2 letter. “It is my understanding that hundreds of Cintas’ immigrant workers have received these letters. I am extremely concerned about any potentially discriminatory actions targeting this community.”
Because having millions of people who cannot take it upon themselves to care enough to gain proper legal status here isn’t a homeland security risk to this guy.
I’ve spoken about the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) test here before. It is basically a state approved standardized test at the 10th grade level that all students must pass before they can pass. They get multiple tries per year starting in their sophomore year to take and re-take and re-re-take the test until they pass.
But because of the abysmal state of education in Washington State, with the students unable to pass the WASL with any regularity, the state government keeps talking about changing and even ditching the test altogether. Instead of making the students learn up to the standards required, they’d rather just lower the standards and pat themselves on the back.
Because they’re all about the kids.
(Barely) Governor Gregiore has now decided to lead the charge to make Washington State parents believe that less is more (Less test = More students passing the test).
Gov. Chris Gregoire said Monday that she will propose to the Legislature that students will not have to pass the math section of the Washington Assessment of Student Learning to graduate from high school at least until 2011.
Students in the classes of 2008, 2009 and 2010 should either pass either the WASL math test or take and pass math classes to graduate, the governor and Superintendent of Public Instruct Terry Bergeson proposed.
The graduation requirements for passing the reading and writing sections of the WASL would not be affected. About half of last year’s 10th graders — the class of 2008 — failed to pass the math section of the WASL. The class of 2008 was supposed to be the first required to pass the WASL in order to graduate.
“I want to let students and parents know that we are listening to their concerns and we believe this plan promotes math skills without penalizing responsible, hardworking students and teachers,” Gregoire said.
She said the state has a comprehensive plan to improve math teaching and learning in its public schools.
“We owe it to these students to prepare them before they graduate high school,” she said.
Of course, no one has seen this “comprehensive plan”, but no one in the Queen Christine fawning media wants to ask her about why.
The only thing she is helping to prepare students to do is fail in life. Because college profs and future employers will always just lower or drop standards if these future college students and employees can’t meet them.
I used to worry about being passed up by the next generation once they entered the job market. Their lifetime growing up with real computers and other technology making their other job skills easier to learn.
Not so much anymore. Unless I need to known how to get past a Level 6 bad guy while pulling off a 720 on my Razr.
Quoth Ted Kaczynski, writing as “the terrorist group FS:”
…To make an impression on society with words is therefore almost impossible for most individuals and small groups. Take us (FC) for example. If we had never done anything violent and had submitted the present writings to a publisher, they probably would not have been accepted. If they had been accepted and published, they probably would not have attracted many readers, because it’s more fun to watch the entertainment put out by the media than to read a sober essay. Even if these writings had had many readers, most of these readers would soon have forgotten what they had read as their minds were flooded by the mass of material to which the media expose them. In order to get our message before the public with some chance of making a lasting impression, we’ve had to kill people.
From The Unabomber’s Manifesto. Actually, the first thirty or so paragraphs are basically a cogent (if inartfully written and intellectually sloppy) rant about Leftism that could have come from any number of blogs out there.
If Iraq is in a civil war, why does the American left insist on rooting for the pro-slavery side?
…or at least that’s what is alleged to have occurred in the recent Atlanta home invasion dynamic entry. Be warned, this one’s pretty murky, folks. Details at Volokh.
Goddam Ninjas….
Update: Guess it’s not too murky for the FBI to investigate.
If you watched NFL Football last night you will have noticed that we finally got a healthy dumping of snow here in Seattle.
Please feel lucky that you did not have to drive around in it. It is pretty much common knowledge that the Seattle area has a rather larger number of America’s worst drivers, even in perfect weather.
We routinely let our Sunday drivers out a day or two early, three-way and four-way stops are non-functional as everyone tries to out-polite each other by waving the car who doesn’t have the right of way through first, people stop for green lights rather regularly, just to name a few of the things you will find on the roads in this area.
Adding a couple inches of snow is not taken as a hint to stay home by our less confident drivers, it is to them, rather a sign to leave their houses and drive as oddly as possible within the realm of standard physics.
It is also a sign to people who are leaving a major league sports event to not get on the roads immediately, but to instead go hang out at a nearby drinking establishment for four to five hours, and THEN try to drive home.
I got my necessary work finished at my job in Seattle and clocked out shortly after 0200 to drive the 30 miles to my home in Tacoma. My work is very near the interstate and I live not too far from it as well, so this trip usually takes around 25-30 minutes.
As I rolled into my driveway at 0525, I was thinking that maybe I should have just stayed at work and gotten paid instead of burning a 1/5 of a tank of gas trying to see the inside of my home.
If you would like to hear of this (mis)adventure, please follow me below the fold.
By now I’m sure you’ve heard of Senator George Allen’s last piece of legislation, The National Park Second Amendment Restoration and Personal Protection Act of 2006 (in pdf here) , which will restore your and my 2nd Amendment right to carry a firearm on these rather large bits of federal land holdings.
Notwithstanding any other provision of law (including regulations), the possession or carrying of a firearm at a unit of the National Park System in compliance with Federal law and the law of the State in which the unit of the National Park System is located shall not be prohibited.
While that is the meat of S. 4057, I especially like Section 2, Part 5
The Federal Laws should make it clear that the second amendment right of an individual at a unit of the National Park system should not be infringed.
However, the left is not at all happy, calling this “A Parting Shot From George Allen”
The NYT, of course, isn’t even that nice about it
As a last little gift to America, Senator George Allen, who was narrowly defeated by James Webb this month, has introduced what may be his final piece of legislation: a bill that would allow the carrying of concealed weapons in national parks. The argument behind the bill is that national park regulations unfairly strip many Americans of a right they may enjoy outside the parks. The bill has passed to the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, where we hope it will die the miserable death it deserves.
America’s confusion about the Second Amendment is now nearly total. An amendment that ensures a collective right to bear arms has been misread in one legislature after another — often in the face of strong public disapproval — as a law guaranteeing an individual’s right to carry a weapon in public. And, in a perversion of monumental proportions, the battle to extend that right has largely succeeded in co-opting the language of the Civil Rights movement, so that depriving an American of the right to carry a gun in public sounds, to some, as offensive as stripping him of the right to vote. Senator Allen’s bill is, of course, being cheered by the gun lobby, which sees it not as an assault on public safety but as a way of nationalizing the armed paranoia that the National Rifle Association and its cohorts stand for.
If Americans want to feel safer in their national parks, the proper solution is to increase park funding, which has decayed steadily since the Bush administration took office. To zealots who believe that the Second Amendment trumps all others, the parks are merely another badland, like schools and church parking lots, that could be cleaned up if the carrying of private weapons were allowed. The concealed-weapon advocates are doing an excellent job of sounding terrified by “lonely wilderness trails.†But make no mistake. Senator Allen’s bill would make no one safer. It can only endanger the public.
Great jumped-up Jesus on a pogo sitck, that sounds like it came right out of a VPC or Brady pamphlet. Full of accusations of fear lobbying, using, well, fear lobbying.
Now don’t go thinking that there is a left-wing bias in the media. And especailly don’t go around to any left-wing blogs stating that or going on about the 2nd being an individual right. I’ve found that they like to ban folks who do that.
The Virginia Citizen’s Defense League has all the pertinent info right here, including on how to contact you appropriate legislator. Make sure to be annoying on this one.
If that piece by the Times didn’t get your heart racing enough to do something on this, then email me and I’ll send you my shipping address so that you can just send your firearms and ammunition to me today. No need to wait for opposing legislation in your case, now is there?
It sucks that A. We have to put up with stupid gun laws on our own property (i.e – our National Parks), and B. We have to fight to correct said stupid gun laws.

I’m so gonna love to hear his excuse for this
I want to make it abundantly clear: if there’s anyone who believes that these youngsters want to fight, as the Pentagon and some generals have said, you can just forget about it. No young, bright individual wants to fight just because of a bonus and just because of educational benefits. And most all of them come from communities of very, very high unemployment. If a young fella has an option of having a decent career or joining the army to fight in Iraq, you can bet your life that he would not be in Iraq.

He was on the Fox News Network, so you know he can’t pull a Kerry and blame it on a badly delivered joke. I mean, they’re such humorless conservatives over there that no one would try comedy on one of their channels.
And no, this isn’t institutionalized disdain for the military. No. Never. Of course not.
