The Soundboard: Outside the Rock Box

Back in 1987, when I was in junior high, Hip Hop/Rap was getting bigger by the week. Even waaaay out here in the elbow crook of America, kids were starting to talk gold chains and Adidas. Just the year before, Run-DMC had teamed up with Aerosmith for their hit “Walk this Way”, helping mainstream Rap to the masses.

However, metal was not going to die very easily, nor without a last laugh.

So it was with great satisfaction that I purchased an vinyl copy (which was copied onto a cassette) of an EP from speed-metallers, Anthrax.

It contained six tracks, three of which were different versions of the same track, a hellacious cover of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and two other “included” tracks (which weren’t too bad in themselves).

We were all 14-15 years old, so attention was focused on the title track. A mocking mix of Rap and Metal with all the makings of a staple for my collection.

So, for your enjoyment after you get home from being jostled about in the stores, I give you

I’m the Man – Anthrax

You should really just buy this EP. Try here first.
