Inexpensive Aerial Surveillance

…er, I mean, Aerial Photography (“AP” to its devotees). An R/C plane, a digital camera, and thou equals these very kewl shots.

I know the photographer personally. A great guy, a true Hero of the Cold War (no, I can’t say what he did) and a pretty good amateur photographer.

Might he divulge how he got the camera to work remotely?

Well, he’s not looking at a live picture on the ground as you might with, say, a Predator drone. Instead, he lines up the camera body and clicks some sort of remote shutter release. I’ll ask him about exactly how that works.

He has the camera mounted in line with the left wing, IIRC. So although the plane’s ceiling is quite high, in practical terms he’s limited to a height at which he can still see the orientation of the wings. He basically gets the wing lined up with the approximate shot he wants to take, then takes a hundred shots or so, and discards the ones he doesn’t like.

There’s a guy in the Portland area who has a R/C blimp, fits nicely in a 15 foot Wells Cargo trailer, and will lift about three cameras.

I’ve seen his work, and he does aerial photo work for about one fourth the price of hiring a pilot and a bugsmasher.
