About the door

I had many people get it yesterday, but I’m going to give y’all who didn’t one more day to stew on it. I’ll release the answer tomorrow.

I’m going to try and email everyone who wrote in, so if you did, check you email box later this morning.

For your protection.

And her pleasure.

Mr. Completely posts that his local paper, The South Whidbey Record, had made the decision to stop posting ads for firearms and ammunition in their classifieds section.

The South Whidbey Record, published by Sherry Mays, put these words at the top of Section 7150 Guns/Ammo,

“For the protection of our readers, we will no longer accept advertising by private individuals for the sale of firearms

Now, Mr. Completely has some thoughts as to how stopping the advertising of firearms in her paper equals the protection of readers of the paper, but I would like to know, if the idea is to protect the readership, why do they still allow the advertising of items such as automobiles.

Any idiot who can read statistics can tell you that far more people die or are injured by automobiles every day, week, month and year than by firearms.

Or how about motorcycles, are they still accepting ads for those death machines?

Or, oh my goodness, the killers of hundreds of people each year, off road vehicles and farm equipment? While I know of no one who was injured or killed by firearms (not counting wartime injuries), I personally know of three people who have lost appendages to one of those inanimate objects.

I mean, if it is about protection, then let’s get serious, Ms. Mays.

Disclaimer #1: While respect her right to do what she likes with her own paper, just as I have a right to complain about it, she should at least be honest about it.

Disclaimer #2: I use the condom reference because the readers of her paper just got screwed and thought they might like a figurative one.

The Soundboard: Down Under Edition

I saw it in the used CD section of a local bookstore and had to buy it. That is my only excuse.

I remember it from my fifth grade year as being one of the top ten albums you had to have (maybe someday I’ll go through the rest) and when I saw it I knew it was a ‘must buy item’ at $5.99.

They have been described as “The Police before they read Koeslter but you know, I really don’t like bands that I have to do literary research on European post-moderin authors to figure out what they hell they’re singing about, so these guys are just fine with me.

So to start off the new year, I’ll start out with a band from my childhood and their last Top 40 hit.

Men at Work – High Wire

They’ve reissued the first two albums with some bonus material including live tracks on each that really are worth the purchase price. In fact, to be honest, after listening to the used disc I bought, I went and bought the pair of reissues Album 1 and Album 2).

The wife just stares at me when I do strange things like that sometimes.

I should have the .338 ready by then

Good news, good news!

Public meetings are scheduled next month in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming on the federal government’s plans to remove federal protections for grizzly bears surrounding Yellowstone National Park.

The move would put management of bears in the greater Yellowstone ecosystem into the hands of the three states and give them greater flexibility. It also could clear the way for limited hunting.

If you’ve never hunted bear before, they’re wonderful. The big furry pigs will turn the tables on your bumbling ass and hunt you right back if you’re not careful.

Public meetings on the proposal are scheduled Jan. 9 at the Holiday Inn in Bozeman; Jan. 10 in Cody, Wyo.; Jan. 11 in Jackson, Wyo.; and Jan. 12 in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

I won’t be able to go to the meetings, which is really too bad because the enviro-weenies are totally against this and may hold a protest, but I’ll see if they’ll publish an online version of the minutes.

The Interior Department cited robust population growth, coupled with public support and cooperation between state and federal governments, in announcing in November its proposal to remove the grizzly from the Endangered Species List.

The ‘robust growth’ of the Grizzly population means that there may be a robust growth in the quantity of bear sausage in my freezer.

Is it really that popular?

There are many types of geeks in the world. I, am a map geek. Maps are my business. If it wasn’t for maps, I wouldn’t be able to buy food to feed myself.

I can read maps like most folks read a phone book. I have never been lost, and me saying that isn’t just me being a guy. On my first trip to San Francisco as an adult, I read the map of the city to settle my nerves on the bumpy flight down and didn’t have to look back at it for the week I was there.

Not all cities are set up logically, Frisco being one of them. Seattle, the city’s pioneers having seen the steep hillside against the water and said “This would be a great place to put a major seaport! is only partially screwed up. Streets go up, down, sideways, diagonally and any other which way they could lay the original bricks and some of the reasoning behind the directional designator decisions they made are a bit of the city’s esoteric trivia, but if you look at it from a bird’s eye view, also known as ‘From a Map’, it is pretty easy to figure out where you are from ground level and which way you need to go to get where you need to be.

Which is why I scratched my head when read about this at Ravenwood’s,

City’s addresses spell bad feng shui for developers

The city’s street address rules may be scaring off buyers who practice the ancient Chinese tradition of feng shui, developers say.

Under a numbering system established by Alameda County in the 1950s, addresses are assigned based on how far the homes are from downtown Oakland. The method puts five digits on almost every mailbox in Hayward and other cities in the county.

The numbers have always been hard to remember. But home developers recently raised concerns they may decrease property values because the odds are greater that an address will carry a combination considered unlucky by feng shui practitioners. Feng shui holds that the way dwellings are designed can affect the fortunes and health of inhabitants.

First off, how the hell can five digits be that hard to remember? Phone numbers have at least seven in them and these days, most have ten. Five should be a breeze.

And secondly, is Feng Shui really that popular, even in California, even among the Chinese? I’ve heard people making fun of yuppies who believe in it, but good lord, something that insipid can’t be that popular, can it?

All of the addresses in King County (except for those in some suburban towns that were in place before 1950) are based off the starting point of the intersection at First Ave and Yesler Street in Seattle’s Pioneer Square. Almost a whole 20% of the addresses in Seattle and then nearly everything else in the county, especially those that are on streets that run north/south have five-digit addresses.

I guess we don’t have too many Feng Shui believers in this area. Or maybe we do and they’re all unhappy.

RNS Quote of the Day

Every ugly, brutal aspect of injustice toward racial or religious minorities is being practiced toward businessmen. For instance, consider the evil of condemning some men and absolving others, without a hearing, regardless of the facts.

Today’s ‘liberals’ consider a businessmen guilty in any conflict with a labor union, regardless of the facts or issues involved, and boast that they will not cross a picket line ‘right or wrong’. Consider the evil of judging people by a double standard and of denying to them the same rights granted to others.

Boomershoot 2006 in Comfort

I had so much fun at Boomershoot 2005 that my wife agreed to tag along this year (probably to get me to stop yapping about how much fun I had, etc.).

This is despite the fact I was sidelined last year with a severe case of sunburn/sunstroke. (Doubly embarrassing for a Californian — but hey, I work in an office!) This year, I’ve resolved to a) bring more sunscreen, and b) bring a well-designed portable canopy to cover our shooting position. Historically, it’s been rainy at Boomershoot, so a canopy is important in any case.

One requirement is that it must be large enough to span both of our shooting benches comfortably, with room for a spotting scope behind. Also, side panels are a must due to the fact that last year, the Analog Kid and I discovered the importance of low-angle shade to cut sun exposure time and reduce glare. Here’s what I’ve picked out. Imagine two of my steel-pipe shooting benches — one left-handed for me, and one right-handed for my wife — instead of the Adirondack chairs, and you’ll get the idea.

(I ordered the above from this site. It was backordered, but shipping date is supposed to be March 1st or thereabouts. Plenty of time for Boomershoot.)

Ending the Year with a Bang

Kirk of Fun Turns to Tragedy blog finished the year off right. Pics and movies of full-auto fun, ginormous muzzle flashes in the dusk, and a Barrett .50! What’s not to like?

I’m looking to hit the range this weekend for the first time in a long time. Range report to follow.

I haven’t done this in a long while

But it’s fisking time!

From yesterday’s Seattle Post Intelligencer Editorial Board on the implementation of Seattle’s forced recycling program,

In Seattle, the power of the law is now on the side of right and recycling. The possibility of a little pain could lead to a lot of gain.

The ‘possibile pain’ is a $50 fine for having too many recyclables in your trash bin. How in the hell can that be ‘right’?

The only gain that is available is for the city’s status in the Top Ten recycling cities in the country. And for that, they are willing to point every ounce of the city’s legal might at the private property owner to make sure they separate their newspaper from their trash.
