History Buffs

Or ‘History in the Buff’ as I think Miss Adrianna would rather it.

There is a stereotype that beautiful women cannot be intelligent as well. I think that if one were to stop by the Occidental Tush Institute on any given day, one would find a few examples of that stereotype, but they would probably also be quite floored at the number very intelligent young women who attend.

Take Miss Adriana for example; she will be commemorating the the end of the Siege of Antioch and it’s return to Christian hands on this day in 1098.

This is the outfit she will be wearing today. She calls it her ‘Crusader Outfit’

While I do agree that the attire is quite disarming, I seriously doubt that it is historically correct.

Though, I am not one to object.

Warlord Wildey, er Automag?

James at Hell in a Handbasket proves his gun-geek status by identifying the handgun used by DC’s Warlord as a Wildey Magnum.

Warlord.jpg

My hat’s off to you sir. I too own this particular comic — the Warlord series was one of my favorites as a kid — but somehow I never bothered to identify the gun!

hat tip: Alphecca.

Update: well, shut my mouth! Reader Ironbear astutely noted that Mike Grell took pains to identify Travis Morgan’s gun as a .44 Automag throughout the series. So the question becomes, did James misidentify the gun? Automags and Wildeys look kinda similar, after all.

This was a good excuse for me to dig out George Nonte and Lee Jurras’ Handgun Hunting, which had several pics of Automags in the field. As soon as I get to the office I’ll scan ’em in and post ’em. In the meantime, here’s a pic of the Automag, so you can judge for yourself:

Because It Is True

Raging Dave at the 4 Right Wing Wackos blog did me the favor of linking to my little diatribe on how the eco-socialist cult has destroyed the recycling industry. In his post, he notes the term I use to describe them.

I admit it is a recent addition to my vocabulary on these folks and is quite blunt, but I have my reasons for this:

They claim that nothing comes before the ecosystem; not country; not even their own families.

They are socialists, plain and simple. Their hatred for everything capitalist proves that.

They are a cult because of the ecology they worship and because you cannot be a cult without a Doomsday Prophecy, which they now have with the Climate Change boogeyman.

It all started with Global Cooling, then they switched it up to Global Warming when temperatures started going up and now the popular, all-encompassing phrase, so that they cannot be proved wrong ever again is Climate Change.

While I’ll admit that parts of the planet are getting warmer, because these people cannot even scientifically prove what happens to CO and CO2 when it hits the atmosphere, they haven’t the proof to say that my V8 truck, and everyone else’s V8 trucks are at fault. When they can tell me a theory that is more than a guess with a label, I’ll start thinking about believeing.

Until then, they can pucker up.

From The Agitator blog comes proof that they themselves see Climate Change as a piece of apocolyptic propaganda:

Before President Bush touched down in Pennsylvania Wednesday to promote his nuclear energy policy, the environmental group Greenpeace was mobilizing.

“This volatile and dangerous source of energy” is no answer to the country’s energy needs, shouted a Greenpeace fact sheet decrying the “threat” posed by the Limerick reactors Bush visited.

But a factoid or two later, the Greenpeace authors were stumped while searching for the ideal menacing metaphor.

We present it here exactly as it was written, capital letters and all: “In the twenty years since the Chernobyl tragedy, the world’s worst nuclear accident, there have been nearly [FILL IN ALARMIST AND ARMAGEDDONIST FACTOID HERE].”

They can’t even be bothered to come up with a “Factoid” while sitting at their PC’s writing out the flyers.

If they can’t be bothered to come up with facts, I don’t know why I should be expected to listen and especially to believe.

Even They Don’t Really Know

So how are we supposed to?

Found by Tim at Four Right Wing Wackos

The “Campaign for America’s Future”, a left wing activist group is running a contest to try and help define exactly what “A Progressive” is. Once again, the leftists have gotten all caught up in their need to label everyone and everything and are only now seeking to define the term they coined to shy away from the term “Liberal”.

The term “Liberal” was never really that bad of a term until the Democratic Socialists got their hands on it, and then made asses of themselves trying to tell the American people what they should want. When we told them to get stuffed and as a nation turned decidedly anti-liberal, they figured they should pick up a new term to try and disguise themselves again.

But if you click on the link, you’ll see that they’re the same old Democratic Socialists. They want “Fair” everything, but only they get to decide what is “Fair”. They long to trust the government more than they trust themselves, and they wish cute little bunnies and yellow daisies for everyone.

Here is my entry, which will, of course, never be accepted by the CAF:

A Progressive is a self-loathing, egomaniacal twit, whose self -importance is only shadowed by insistence that everyone’s lives can be made perfect, usually involving the help of government.

A Progressive believes that with enough understanding and talking through problems, anything can happen; Muslims will stop their institutionalized hatred of Jews and Christians, murderous dictators will cease killing their own people and threatening their neighbors and everything will settle down into a world-wide nirvana, if only more words were exchanged.

It is for this reason that Progressives are dangerous!

Progressives will negotiate to the point of inaction. Their willingness to believe a protest march will effect how things play out on the world stage leads to many more paper-mache puppets than the world can viably sustain.

A Progressive will turn violent and completely psychopathic if they do not get their way, creating the most bizarre conspiracy theories ever imagined. While they do not believe in the concept of “Good vs Evil”, they will think the aboslute worst of their opponents, usually projecting their thoughts into that of the other person.

You can tell a Progressive by their language. Words like “Social Justice”, “Worker Equity”, “Living Wage” are just a few of the terms that set a Progressive apart from members of the intelligent citizenry. Those terms signify that they are about to try and make you wallet a bit less full. Beware of the Progressive. While they say they want “What Is Best For You”, they most absolutely do not.

They only want to make themselves “Feel” better.

Take a moment and click the link and read some of the serious suggestions offered at the CAF site. They are in the lower part of the right hand column.

The one at the very bottom, in my mind, signifies what is exactly wrong with Progressives. Here it is:

Virginia W. Sausalito, CA

When the water rises, the storm is raging and the winds are howling, the conservatives say “Quick, throw some people out of the boat or we will sink.” A Progressive says, “Hold on, let’s build a bigger boat.”

Using Virginia’s own words, I will prove my definition above:

The storm is here and we’re already in our emergency boats, but the Progressive’s solution is to stop the entire group and “build a bigger boat”. Nevermind that it is too late for that, we have to take a chance at killing everyone while we somehow create new and better transport.

Also notice that Virginia believes that the conservatives would have no problem tossing some of the group to their deaths. This is her projection disability. She has played this scenario out in her mind, and this is what she believes her adversaries would say.

Virginia most likely also believes the popular leftist theory that ‘conservatives’ have built large concentration camps in the desert for ‘people just like her’.

So now, go pick the one you think best describes a Progressive. Nevermind that you hold no truck with them. I didn’t say you had to choose the one they believe best describes them, CAF did. Screw them.

I didn’t have to look far

I was looking for one more post for today, so I opened my email and clicked on the one from Wednesday from the Seattle Times. Bada-bing bada-boom, thar she blows, a whale of dipstick, Nicole Brodeur, Seattle Times staff columnist and resident twit.

You see, Nicole has been “Driven to shame by example”. I know this, because that was the title of her colum on Wednesday.

Big thanks to Kent Peterson and his family.

They have convinced me beyond reasonable doubt that I am a wasteful, consuming slug. The Petersons live in Issaquah, a land ruled by cars — but don’t own one. According to Sunday’s story by Times reporter Sonia Krishnan, Kent bikes to work in Seattle; his wife, Christine, walks 25 minutes to work in Issaquah; and their two sons walk to school.

I own two cars — one of them a station wagon. And I’m not hauling around the Brady Bunch or sides of beef.

Rather, my car is a rolling storage facility, filled with clothes to be donated, shoes to be repaired, bungee cord to strap more stuff in, and a folding field chair on which to place my fat butt on the sidelines.

And there’s this: I drive five blocks to my running path.

“And you’re willing to confess that?” asked Lawrence Axil Comras, president of GreenHome.com in San Francisco, which offers kits and products for “greening” homes. “You’re a brave soul. But I forgive you.”

You know what Nicole, even in my mind, you are a slug, and not just because I don’t like your opinions. If you are going for a run five blocks from your house, you’d be an idiot to fire up your car.

Also, the next time you talk to Lawrence Axil Comras, tell him to shove his self important ‘forgiveness’ up his ass.

Git Yer Guns Out

The MilBloggers are coming to town.

Barb from Righty in a Lefty State is in contact with MilBlogger Francis Marion of the Where I Stand Blog. Francis is coming to Ft. Lewis this summer and they are looking for attendees and suggestions of locations for a meet-greet-and-shoot on Saturday July 15th.

Myself, I wouldn’t mind an outdoor meet at Renton Fish & Game with their 200yd rifle and 25yd pistol ranges. If they just want pistols, there is The Marksman in/near Puyallup or Champion Arms in Kent.

What say ye?

The Soundboard: Driving Music Pt. 2

Track time is expensive. That is to say, the owners of race tracks will request your first born to roll your tires across their asphalt. And that is their right.

But that means you either don’t get to practice as often as you’d like or you practice on the public highways and byways.

I like the path of least resistance on this topic and so did a number of my auto tuning friends. We would get together for a series of roads games late at night when the roads were clear and test newly installed or modified parts as well as practice certain things you really don’t want to do in traffic.

Shifting down more than one gear is not a natural manuever. When you first learn to drive a manual transmission, you learn 1-2-3-4-5 and 5-4-3-2-1. 5 to 3 is throws up big, flashing red lights in the brain for some folks, others not so much. But either way, you need to learn to overcome the feeling that doing this is somehow wrong.

On the other hand, passing other vehicles is a natural feeling for most folks. You are moving faster than the car in front of you; you either need to slow down or go around. But close tolerances, less than a couple feet, if not under a foot, can bring the big red lights flashing in your brain as it takes a split second to remind you of everything that could go wrong. You need to learn that as long as you are doing everything correctly and the guy you’re passing doesn’t wig out in some way, things will go exactly as planned.

But who do you practice on? You certainly don’t want to be doing this in traffic, and even AJ Foyt couldn’t pass himself.

Well, you gather up your friends and conduct, as I liked to call it, passing practice sessions. I’ve heard it called ‘Leapfrogging’  and from the guys with ‘No Torque’ cars, in days past, RX-7’s, and currently the S2000’s, ‘Shifting Practice’ (because 5 to 3 is a dream for them, they are usually digging for 5 to 2). I learned this from watching groups of sportbike riders. They travel in packs anyway, so it is probably easier for them to get a group together, and some of the wannabes really need to see if they’ve got the nuts for riding and this is a perfect exercise for that.

How it goes is this: You and as many people as you trust to invite (at least 3 or 4, but we had groups as large as 12 at times) set a cruising speed, usually 80-90mph. You are bumper to bumper, literally, if you can see the bumper of the guy in front of you over your hood, you’re too far back. Once up to cruising speed, you set up in your top gear and roll for a bit. When he’s ready, the guy at the back of the pack steers around the car in front of him, downshifts and takes off, passing the rest of the group, taking his place at the front of the pack. A perfect pass would be if he keeps the back end of his car within 3ft of the car in front of him as he settles back down to the cruising speed.

As soon as possible after he is locked into the front spot, the guy who was in front of him and is now at the back of the pack does the same thing. And so on, and so on until you run out of gas or road, or whatever.

If you care to add danger to the mix, don’t do you research on the traffic constables. Make sure you tell the slowest guy in the pack (the buffalo) beforehand.

Do not try this at home. Also, not for the faint of heart.

This will help you become fearless of wierd shift combos and close vehicle tolerances (you can have a nice car or you can have a race car, you cannot have both), which will help you remember where your four corners are at all times.

And, as in all things driving, there is a certain type of tunage you will need to make the moment complete.

For me, it would be a song like this one:

Jamiroquai – Travelling Without Moving

The bassline is perfect, the lyrics I could care less about and, for all his harping on about the enviroment, lead singer Jay Kay owns way too many sports cars to not be a full-on hypocrite.

The opening seconds of this tune feature the sound of his 1996 Lamboghini Diablo SE30 Jota. In purple, if I remember correctly. Listen for the gated shifter. Try not to drool.

Comin’ Through

Or, perhaps not.

If electricity is manufactured in one place, say, the Columbia River via hydroelectric dam, and used in another place, say, Seattle, you will need to sting wires from the dam to Seattle. The same fact holds true for oil and natural gas pipelines.

But that means possibly crossing through hundreds of miles of forest land to get from Point A to Point B. The passage is nowadays called an Energy Corridor.

Energy Corridors are allowed to bypass some of the enviro-laws because the need is greater than the risks.

And if ever there was proof that the eco-cultists want us to return back to the bronze age, this story is it.

The McNary Wildlife Refuge is a system of sloughs and mudflats near where the Columbia and Snake rivers meet in southeastern Washington. It’s home to bald eagles, endangered peregrine falcons and thousands of migrating shorebirds.

Someday, it also may be next door to a new string of electricity towers or underground pipelines delivering more energy to the West.

Next month, the federal government will unveil a proposal to dedicate thousands of miles of federal land in the West as a network of utility corridors, where energy companies in the future could locate new transmission towers or pipelines for oil, gas and hydrogen.

Most will be in places already home to gas lines or electricity lines.

But some may be three-quarters of a mile wide, cutting across undisturbed terrain or through national parks, scenic areas or wildlife-rich lands. An early draft suggests one might run alongside the McNary refuge.

Some government officials, environmentalists and tribal leaders fear the proposal could ultimately disrupt sensitive landscapes and expose some of the West’s most distinctive places to pipeline explosions or fuel spills.

“Alarm bells are ringing on some of these corridors,” said Ivan Maluski, conservation coordinator for the Sierra Club in Oregon.

“Alarm”. They are more afraid for their Green Speckled Sand Mites than they are about making sure there is electricity to the homes and businesses in the urban and suburban areas of the state.

They would rather we sit in the dark than disturb the Red Spotted Field Mice, who are actually only dying out because of the lack of control on the Coyote population, thanks to their lobbying of some unknown state congressman.

So now we have no drilling for new oil, anywhere, and no new refineries either, no looking for new sources of natural gas, most everywhere, no building dams for their fuel free generation of electricity because the salmon get confused and no building of nuclear power plants because well, just because.

If they keep this up, we won’t even need the Energy Corridors.

But then, that was probably the plan all along, wasn’t it?

I think this headline is wrong

Washinton state’s Loon population plummets

I see loons every single day around here. They keep calling for universal healthcare and to stop killing terrorists in Afghanistan and Iraq and for more public transportation.

It’s like these Democrats are breeding or something!

Oh wait. Nevermind. They’re talking about birds.

My Bad =)
