James at Hell in a Handbasket proves his gun-geek status by identifying the handgun used by DC’s Warlord as a Wildey Magnum.
My hat’s off to you sir. I too own this particular comic — the Warlord series was one of my favorites as a kid — but somehow I never bothered to identify the gun!
hat tip: Alphecca.
Update: well, shut my mouth! Reader Ironbear astutely noted that Mike Grell took pains to identify Travis Morgan’s gun as a .44 Automag throughout the series. So the question becomes, did James misidentify the gun? Automags and Wildeys look kinda similar, after all.
This was a good excuse for me to dig out George Nonte and Lee Jurras’ Handgun Hunting, which had several pics of Automags in the field. As soon as I get to the office I’ll scan ’em in and post ’em. In the meantime, here’s a pic of the Automag, so you can judge for yourself:
*ahem* They may have drawn a Whildey on that particular cover… but if you read from the beginning of the Warlord series, they stated it was an Automag through most of the series. And drew it as an automag [kinda, given lisence for comic artists inability to draw guns accurately] for most of the series.
You’re entirely right about the Automag. It’s been fifteen years since I dug out my Warlord comics, you gave me a good excuse. (Although, was the Automag really ever Air Force “standard issue?” Methinks not.)
Now I’m wondering — the Automag and the Wildey look kinda similar — do you think the gun on the cover is an Automag? I shall do some research….
Looks like I did make a mistake. Thank you kindly for the heads up, Ironbear.
