Still Not Panicking, Just Pissed Off

Yesterday I spoke of snatching myself up an M1A before the “Pelosi/Schumer Ban All Scary Looking Guns Act” goes into effect.

Cabinboy stopped by and mentioned a few things that I took him up on. While I’m grateful for the info, I somewhat wished I hadn’t.

And this is why.

I haven’t looked into the M1A/M14/M21 line of rifles in a very long time. I think they are beautiful rifles. Likewise, they are usually quite accurate and very reliable by design, which is why the eagle-eyed guys in both Iraq and Afghanistan are still using them.

Unfortuantely for us, they’re still using them. I had figured that due to the AWB being over and done with and the market’s demand for them skyrocketing, that someone would be making USGI Spec parts for these rifles.

Long story short, they’re not. Springfield is even running out of NM sights and is restricting who they sell them to and on which rifles they install them.

And unless you have a couple of nice crisp Franklins in your hand and can talk a guy out of them, you won’t ever get yourself a pair. And those are just sights. Any and all MN grade USGI spec parts (which are the only ones worth a shit) are 1. Hard to find, and 2. Fucking expensive.

To shorten up another long story, I’m not paying twice as much as I should because some manufacturer wants to sit on their inventory and make a mint. I’m a faithful consumer who believes in the market at work, and I’m here to say that this section of the market is telling said manufacturer that he’s going somewhere else. Said manufacturer has earned The Order of the Imperial Upraised Middle Finger from me.

I am also not going to waste time looking for one second-hand because finding “the right one” takes time. Buying “the right one” over the internet is impossible and, what with the news of folks buying up AR parts at a high rate after Tuesday’s results came out, just finding one that is close to “the right one” that someone is willing to part with will prove difficult at any price. And because buying anything less than “the right one” will mean that the new purchase needs “something” that I don’t have the extra time/money for.

The US Military is going to take another decade to find a replacement for the M14/M21 so there won’t even be any decent used USGI Spec parts on the market for at least five years after that.

To add to that thought, does anyone here remember what happened last time the military decided to cut loose some of these rifles? It is the #1 reason I was disgusted with Clinton.

He cut thousands of them up and sold them for scrap. Straight up told the DCM to stick it where the sun don’t shine and that he was ordering these excellent rifles to be turned into paperweights. He could have saved my mother from a runaway train, sacrificing both of his legs in the process, and I would still hold that against him.

Who is that that just won both houses of Congress? Yeah, and now you know who will order the next batch of M14/M21s to the scrap heap and not to the parts bins/DCM rack.

I don’t know why someone else hasn’t stepped in to become a parts manufacturer. Everytime I’ve visited Olympic Arms (aka: Schuetzen Gun Works) I’ve asked them and they, quite literally, have no answer. Even if they just pumped out NM OpRods and barrels they would make enough money to cover the loss I’ve heard they’re taking on their Wolverine pistol.

——————

OK, now that I’m done ranting, here is the plan: FN/FAL or, the one I really like, the PTR HK91/G3 clone.

I have shot both an original FN/FAL and an original G3. I like them both, though again, I like the G3 more because I am more accurate and more comfortable with it’s ergonomics. Parts are plentiful for both, and while not cheap, they are quite reasonable.

I would like to ask folks for their reviews if they own them. If you know of someone who does, send them here so I can annoy them with inquisitive questions.

When they say “Don’t try this at home”

They mean it!

A 22-year-old man suffered internal injuries after lighting a small firecracker he had inserted into his buttocks, paramedics said Thursday.

The incident took place Sunday, when Britain celebrated Bonfire Night, traditionally marked with fireworks to celebrate the Guy Fawkes’ gunpowder plot to blow up Parliament in the 17th century.

The man suffered burns and other unspecified internal injuries in the incident in Sunderland, 275 miles north of London.

Katherine Shenton, a spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service, said a caller had phoned in that the victim was bleeding after the firecracker exploded.

Several of the man’s friends recorded the incident on a mobile phone. The blurry images show a man bent over with his pants down and a white flash as the firecracker explodes.

Maybe he was depressed that no one had been able to blow his ass up while he was in Iraq?

The Times newspaper reported the man is a soldier who recently returned from Iraq.

Though I don’t know of anyone else who has felt that way.

I suppose it can’t hurt

I mean, what is there left to damage?

Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele (R), who came up just short yesterday in his Senate race against Rep. Ben Cardin (D), is mulling a bid for the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee, according to an informed GOP source.

Steele would not challenge current RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman, but chatter among Republican insiders is that Mehlman has made clear for months that he might not return to his current post.

“Chairman Mehlman will be making an announcement regarding his future at the RNC in the coming weeks,” said RNC communication director Brian Jones.

Mehlman has made outreach to the African American community a priority during his time as head of the party, and Steele would be seen as a logical successor to that effort.

According to the Washington Times, Rove is making a tad bit of fuss on this, trying to quiet it, saying that he wanted Steele to be the new HUD Secretary. Watch for the race card to be called out on Rove by folks on the left. We’ve hit him with the dummy card over the past couple days, so it shouldn’t phase him, but it might be entertaining.

They’re a demanding group, aren’t they?

VP Cheney is the current occupant of a rather nice office in the building that houses the offices of members of the House of Representatives. Apparently, it is usually a perk given to the chair of the House Ways & Means committee.

As we all know, in January the Dems will be taking over the committee appointments and Charles Rangle (D-NY) will most likely be taking of the chair of the Way’s & Means committee to become the one man who can singlehandedly wreck the entire US economy.

And he wants the offices.

He has no claim other than tradition, and Cheney has made no statement as to whether he will accede to Rangle’s demands, but I seriously doubt it.

Of course, the leftists think Rangle has every right to the claim and want any Democrat who agrees with Cheney to figuratively be fed to the lions.

Speaking of Rangle, if you stopped by Michelle Malkin’s place yesterday, you saw Rangle go knee-deep with foot-in-mouth disease and confirm the worst fears of gunbloggers everywhere.

“It’s not just committees — our influence within the House Democratic caucus will grow enormously,” Mr. Rangel said in an interview.

To that end, he sketched out an expansive federal agenda: Teaming up with Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg on gun control, passing new tax incentives for urban job programs, and redirecting federal money to New York in return for the outsize tax collections that the federal government makes here.

“Mississippi gets more than their fair share back in federal money, but who the hell wants to live in Mississippi?” Mr. Rangel said.

To which Rep. Chip Pickering (R) follows by putting his foot right up Rangle’s ass

Last year, Hurricane Katrina devastated the Mississippi Coast. We have been working hard not only to rebuild our own homes and communities, but also to repair and protect the network of refineries, pipelines, and transmission grids that supply energy, gas, and oil to the rest of the country, including New York. If Mr. Rangel believes those efforts required more than our fair share of federal money, he is welcome to send that energy back to our state and find an alternative supply.

RNS Quote of the Day: 11/09/06

From the comments section at the AoSHQ

I just bought a huge solar panel. Casey/Pisslousy/Kennedy promised 2 years of sunshine. Stock up on these now people, no clouds for two years. All that sunshine coming out their asses could lead to a drought though. Wait, Bushs’ global warming will bring water, Donks bring sunshine.

Hutch1200

There is now a snark contest going on in the comments section of said post.

My current favorite is from Warden, right near the top of the stack:

I sat down in the situation room this morning for my daily constitution when, much to my suprise, a rainbow shot out of my ass.

It smelled of jasmine, lavender, and freshly cut flowers.

After I finished (no cleanup!) I walked outside and three baby bunnyrabbits hopped up and sat in my lap while I scratched their furry little ears. One of them presented me with a small pot of gold bullion which I attempted to give to the homeless man on the corner, but strangely he was not there this morning.

Gotta have more snark! And cowbell!

November Fools! OK, those aren’t really today’s QotD, this bit by Mark Tapscott is:

When Republicans worry more about staying in government than about limiting government, they get thrown out of government. That’s the lesson of Nov. 7, 2006.

Not Panicking

Rivrdog once again reminds us of what will probably transpire shortly after the 110th Congress fires up in January.

According to Uncle, he’s not the only one thinking that way.

A little birdie told me that the phones at one of the prominent makers of evil black rifles has been busy for the last several hours.

As for me (and according to the wife), I can outfit a 5 man squad (or two fours), so there is nothing I really need other than maybe more ammo.

But there is something I want that will be on the gun-grabbing bigot’s list.

I haven’t had one since my late teens because I’ve always just sort of put it off for other firearms I actually needed. I’m sure you can all guess what it is without too much trouble, but here are some clues: I already have a rifle in this caliber (bonus!), it isn’t a “minor” caliber (aka:Poodleshooter) and although it looks great in wood, I’ll be getting a McMillan fiberglass stock for mine.

Oh yeah, they’re fucking expensive. So it may actually be January before I can get mine.

The Soundboard: Political Songs

OK, this song is only political in my twisted little reality, but I thought you might get a kick out of it anyway.

Seeing as how I got a positive response from the tunage I posted on Monday, I decided to pop up more Weird Al tunage today.

I picked this one because, even though they won their place in Congress (at least I haven’t heard of any of them crying about how they stole the election), they are still incorrect in their thinking on the issues.

Defense, socialized medicine, how economies work, gun control, Social Security, and I could go on for an hour writing out all the things the left is wrong about.

So I figured this song fits this train of thought of mine quite nicely

Everything You Know Is Wrong – Weird Al Yankovic

And for those who didn’t stop by for Monday (tsk, tsk) the track from then will be available until tomorrow.

This song came from this album and the lyrics can be found below for those who are slow of hearing.

Dare to be Stupid: 11/09/06

Here in Washington, the leftists who run the state are trying to get each and every county to switch to all-mail ballots. Most of the counties in the state have done so, but two of the largest ones have not; King and Pierce (Seattle and Tacoma, repectively).

Just to the south of us, Oregon is all-mail.

King cannot go all mail just yet for two reasons: 1. They’re not able to get the set up yet because of the sheer number of people, and 2. at least a one-third of the county doesn’t trust them after the 2004 Governor’s election debacle.

Yet, the left keeps pushing for all-mail. They misrepresent the numbers of people who already vote by mail and ignore the problems that have been found in the all-vote-by-mail-systems from other places who do it. I have no doubt, now that the state legislature has moved into two-thirds (D) majority territory that we will be quite possibly be voting by mail-only by 2010 if not 2008.

Another problem with vote by mail is that a large number of people don’t put their ballots in the mail until the actual day of the election, meaning it can take up to five days for the elections office to receive the ballot to be able to count it, slowing down the results.

Normally, people on the left who support vote-by-mail ignore this. But sometimes, you can catch them slipping, like Andrew at the EvergreenPolitics blog

Am I the only one who thinks Washington is tallying votes to slowly?

The rest of the country has its results – and it’s not like we’re Oregon with a full mail in ballot yet. Wouldn’t it be nice to know your new 8th District Congressperson? Although I expect that one to be so close, the mail-in ballots will have to be tallied before we know.

They elect incompetent people, then they advocate the slowest vote tallying program, then they bitch about the results.

Progressive America at its best!

Speaking of incompetence, here are some of King County’s greatest moments from Tuesday

Guess which county couldn’t get the pollbooks printed correctly

A King County polling place inspector is here and told me about an odd screw-up today. The pollbooks were misprinted and listed the wrong ballot code numbers. (the printed numbers were all off by 1. e.g. if the pollbook showed code 130, the correct code number would be 129). The Elections office had to call all 500+ inspectors and explain this. No reports yet if this confusion caused voters to be handed incorrect ballots.

Former Washington Secretary of State Ralph Munro when everyone was waiting for results from King County

“Good God, its after midnight.”

Because of the heavy rains some folks were not able to get to their polling places. Sam Reed, the current SoS, made a ruling that people could print a sample ballot from the state website, write “Flood Ballot” on it and turn it in to their county elections office and that it would be treated as a provisional ballot.

Lets just say that someone took advantage of the weather:

I heard a story from an informed source that someone walked into a polling place in Bellevue and stuffed a bunch of “flood ballots” into an Accuvote. They have lawyers looking into this.

Sounds like a Burner supporter to me.

If you click the links, you’ll find that all three of those go to Stefan Sharkansky at Sound Politics

Which is where I also found this story

Even record-breaking flooding in some areas could not deter voters in King County, who turned out in greater than expected levels countywide, leading to ballot shortages in some polling locations.

Although Elections officials expected only a 20% turnout of poll voters, they prepared each polling place with enough materials for a 60 percent turnout. Still, workers in 55 polling places ran short of ballots and provisional ballots for some precincts.

And although the leftists int he comments get snarky at Stefan, they’ll have to kiss his ass in apology, because poster M3047 at the leftwing WashBlog was manning the boxes at one of the polling stations described in the story

Two precincts ran out of ballots. I called the help desk, with our troubleshooter Ian there, when the remaining ballots dropped below 20. Basically I was told we’ll get back to you; they never did.

People who neither speak nor read or write Chinese voted Chinese ballots at my polling place. I called again when we ran out of ballots. I was told by Spider to have them vote Chinese ballots. Somebody remind me again: why is it that we have Chinese ballots in the first place? I also borrowed some ballots from the two precincts which could afford to give up at least 10. I was also told to have people use the AVU. The practicality of this suggestion is disputed by the number of AVU strikers with paper ballots issued instead (not to mention over 50 votes on the AVU).

M3047 also talks about the horrible staffing problems at the polling station, starting out the day one pollworker short and then having HQ call and order the transfer of another pollworker from that station to a different one.

Of course, to keep their Progressive cred, WashBlog will have to forget all of that and delete that post.

D’ya like ballistic terminal performance stats?

Presented in a nicely done graphic format?

Check out this site. Every cartridge tested has a diagram showing bullet path and penetration in inches through jugs-of-water (this bullet went through two jugs! This one went through three!) and a photo of the recovered slug.

I’ve not got a horse in the interminable (ha ha) brouhaha about terminal wound ballistics (Fackler vs. Sanow? Faster vs. bigger? etc.), so if this site should turn out to be pushing one side’s “agenda” or another, I apologize in advance — it’s not apparent to me.

In any event, this seems like interesting data, well presented and worth a look.
