OK, who slept through all of yesterday?

Yes, I’d been reading and watching the MSM reports about how bad it was going to be, but you didn’t expect me to think they were going to be right, did you?

I mean, even those of us here in the deep, deep socialist blue of Washington State were able to hold off the Nutroots candidates Darcy Burner in the 8th, Goldmark in the 5th and Wright in the 4th. Granted, we didn’t get any new Repubs into the House, but holding back “The Three (D) Stooges” is damn commendable.

Especially with the weather problems.

HalpUsJonCarryCarnasiom.jpg

The name of the town they “R Stuk N” is Carnation. I knew they got it pretty bad, even compared to what my end of town got, but not quite that bad. Pic found at SoundPolitics. They said they got it from Hugh Hewitt.

And I don’t understand what kind of one-eyed, ejaculating monkey with a #2 pencil could vote for any of the House incumbents and not for Senate incumbent Maria Cantwell’s (R) opponent, Mike McGavick, but I guess that there are certain things in the universe we are not supposed to understand.

On the upside, what with the national results the way they are, the Nutroots don’t seem too miffed about their weeinies losing.

The Dems have taken the House, and most likely the Senate. I’m at the Dem party at the Sheraton, and everbody is hopped, but I’m heading out to Bellevue where Darcy is currently behind in a tight race. I’ve got no idea where any of the numbers are coming from, so I don’t know what her prospects are, but as always, I’d rather be ahead than behind. Cantwell won, the bad initiatives lost, and we’re picking up a bunch of seats in the state legislature. Darcy would be the icing on the cake… but the cake’s pretty damn tasty on its own.

Ain’t it nice how the left just sort of forgets about the candidates they supported so hard when they don’t win? Makes people want to be part of the team!

So far as I can tell, the Senate is still a tossup. Webb keeps declaring victory in VA, but there is a high probability of a recount. Tester in MT looks to be the winner, but as Craig at MT Policits lays out, there are a few places left to count.

For your convenience, and so that Montanians won’t have to listen to the names of places in the state be butchered by the MSM, Craig has been ever so kind as to whip up a pronunciation guide. Locals will find it hilarious. Folks who’ve visited will get a chuckle.

If you click the Webb link above, it will take you to The Lovers of Lamont homeblog, FireDogLake. For them, in rememberance of their loss to Lieberman last night, I would like to just post this pic that they expected to be able to show to Lieberman supporters.

wrong.jpg

I just don’t want them to forget their intentions.

If you do actually click the Webb link above though, and then scroll down, you will see poster Parachutec trying to play off that not only was it a Democrat sweep, but that they “Pitched a Shutout”. He does it in this McCaskill post as well.

Do not believe it! Do not let them spread this bullshit line!

The (R)’s were able to eek out two new House seat pick-ups (IN-7 and GA-1). Yeah, two versus twenty-two isn’t shit, but I’m not going to have these freaks try and claim a mandate, which you can see Parachutec also do in the McCaskill link above. TRex of FireDogLake tries to claim a mandate as well in his post titled “Subpeonea Powers: Activate!”

Let us not forget that since WWII, a normal loss of Seats in the House for a second term executive in his sixth year is nearly twice the 22 seats the Dems won this week, AND they still haven’t taken the Senate.

The only mandate going on that I can see is a self-love man-date in Charlie Rangel’s bedroom as he pulls his box of tissues under the covers and tries to not wake his wife up while he thinks about holding the government’s purse strings for a couple years.

Sorry for that mental picture.

On the bright side, a government divided is one that doesn’t usually spend a whole lot. Maybe we’ll see Bush finally become “VetoMan”, though I’m not getting my hopes set too high on that one.

I guess all I have left to say now is: You have made a recent large quantity ammo purchase lately, haven’t you?

Have ye done thy duty? (Updated)

votegop.jpg

Pic found at pdb as linked by the GOC.

If so, feel free to look around. Otherwise, hie thee to thy polling place and fulfill your responsibility as a citizen!

For you use today, NZ Bear at TTLB has his Election Tracker up over here.

I found the link to that at CQ, where I also found that the major TV networks have pledged to not release exit polling data until after polls close.

Apparently, Survey USA has not made that pledge, as they have released their polls of mail-in ballot voters here in the Washington 8th Congressional District race between former Sheriff and incumbent Dave Reichert (R) and up and coming nutroots twit, Darcy Burner (D).

The local left is jumping on the fact that more people who have already voted have voted for Burner 54% to 46% (here and here), forgetting that the (R) voters do not trust King County to count their ballot after last years debacle and the 2004 Governor’s election.

So we’ll just see.

Update 0806: I’m back from my polling place.

Something new for me, it was in a church. I’ve never voted in a church. I’ve voted in the indoor rec area of a catholic school, but never a church.

The parking lot was half full and there were always four to five other folks in the voting area voting at the time I was.

King County could learn a hell of a lot from Pierce County. First off, the people handing out the ballots all wore vests from the Pierce County Auditors Office. Secondly, I was offered the choice of a paper ballot or a touch screen machine. I chose the paper ballot out of habit, but it was nice to have the choice. However, the paper ballots used by the county were a bit flimsy. Either that or their pens were heavy.

Let me explain: The method used my the paper ballots was to have an arrow for each candidate or issue. The center section of the arrow was removed. To vote, you needed to fill in the missing section of the arrow coresponding to your vote with a provided fine point felt tip pen.

If you marked to heavily, as I did, when you slide it into the on-site counting machine, the machine refuses to count the ballot because the ink shows through both sides and the machine reads that as an over-vote. Apparently this was a common occurrence as the ladies manning the desk jumped into action.

I was given an envelope to seal my “bad” ballot in which was marked as “corrupted”. This envelope was put into a special box marked “Corrupted Ballots”. I was then given a new ballot with which to try again. Old heavy-handed me got it right the second time.

King County’s voting folks, while nice, are not nearly as knowledgable, and would probably have had me calling the elections office and sacrificing a chicken to get a second ballot.

Now I’m done and home and will sleep unitl 1600PST and then eat and go to work where I will listen to the returns.

Not only did I vote successfully, but I got home in time to get the trash out!

Getting Moist

If you stopped by Rivrdog’s place on Saturday you saw his maps of the rain storm his abode was being assaulted by this last weekend. He had gotten four inches of rain from Thursday until then.

It took us a couple days to get the hit, but in the state to his north, where I live, we got four-plus inches of rain in 18 hours yesterday. But it didn’t stop there; as I write this it is still raining, although a bit lighter.

Rivrdog’s locale continued to get heavy precipitation as well, so that the entirety of the PacNW is now waterlogged and if something isn’t damp, then it hasn’t tried hard enough.

As I was flipping through the local morning newsjockys yesterday, the traffic guy on the Fox affiliate stated very bluntly that, and I paraphrase, “Traffic is atrocious. Just a quick tip, you may want to forget about those five or six cups of coffee and the bran muffin, because you’ll be in your car for a while.”

Most cities have bad traffic, and Seattle is no different. If a bad traffic day in Seattle could be considered a nine or ten, then yesterday went to eleven. Thirty minute commutes went into the region of two hours as the citizenry tried to remember how to drive in a torrent and got to see just how badly their respective cities had managed the street water drainage systems. And with that, I went to sleep in preparation for Monday night at work.

When I awoke in the afternoon it was to news reports of heavy flooding, declared disasters and evacuations, which left me with only one alternative: Grimm. Let me just say that it was a successful first test of his readiness to deal with adverse conditions.

I left around 30 minutes earlier than usual in case of traffic diffculties. I don’t like taking Grimm on the interstate because of his weight and lengthy stopping distance, so I opted for surface streets before even pulling out of the driveway.

Not that my decision amounted to much, The surface streets were still clogged from the morning. In what I had decided was the “safe route” I encountered a 50ft stretch of road that was covered in water up to two feet deep.

Not that it was a problem for Grimm; he’s got 30 inches of clearance from the ground to the floorboards. What was a problem though was “the other people”. I had to come to a stop in around 18 inches of water while some dipshit yuppie broad in a Honda Element stopped halfway through the water obstacle, made a three point turn, and went back the way she came.

When will yuppies learn that 4WD/AWD does not automatically make their vehicle an all-terrain ride? My guess is that she got water in the cabin and freaked out.

After that, I had only to worry about the spots where the water had gone from yard to street, covering the sidewalk and curb. In the dark, with rain coming down faster than my wipers can get rid of it, these jump out and surprise not only you, but the people driving along side you.

Luckily, with Grimm’s weight finally on my side of the equation, I didn’t get either the “pushed into next lane” or “sucked into the maple tree between the road and the sidewalk” action. Though I’m sure the guy in that minivan next-to-and-just-behind me had to clean his drawers after I sent something near 50 gallons of water into his windshield with Grimm’s 13in wide tires.

The rain is supposed continue steadily until Thursday with the high winds subsiding this morning. Which leads me to wonder how it will effect today’s election.

After this test, I have determined that Grimm needs better headlights. Luckily, there is a conversion hit for HID lamps. He could also use a better (read: sealed) air filter can. I spent half the night worrying about water coming into the carb from all the splashing about. Also, the Pro Comp All Terrain tires that came with Grimm do not do so well in the rain. I will probably switch them out for the Pro Comp Mud Terrain style, or something close.

Don Ward at Sound Politics points to study that Dems stay home on rainy days and has called for a raindance.

Unfortunately for Rivrdog, his whole state votes by mail, so there is no doubt that the local elections officials have round-filed his ballot and now eagerly await those of his neighbors.

Pre-Election Day Election Post

Yes, I realized that taking the week before the election off kind of held me back in posting election items. But better late than never!

First up, Sharkansky at Sound Politics posts to let us know that there are new guidelines from Washington Secretary of State, Sam Reed, as to how to “divine voter intent”.

Myself, I don’t believe in voter intent. If it isn’t clear to a 1st grader who was selected then the voter has no intent, is quite possibly too stupid to vote and deserves to have that portion of their ballot thrown out.

Eric Earling at Sound Politics decided to frighten folks (I guess he didn’t get enough out of Halloween) by posing a scary scenario:

More seriously, the story closes with a reference to the possibility of all eyes in the nation turning to the 8th Congressional District if the race is close, AND if control of the House of Representatives hangs in the balance.

What?!?

King County counting ballots for control of the House? Oh, [insert profanity of choice here]! We’d make Florida in 2000 look like kindergarten.

The chance of such events is small, but the thought, terrifying.

I don’t quake in my boots very often, but I was when I read that!

John at Some Poor Schmuck lets us know that the Democrats, defenders of illegal alien voter rights, proponents of “Mail Only” voting and thinkers of positive thoughts on the subject of a “Vote-By-Phone” system, don’t think that the military can be trusted to help deployed service members vote by e-mail.

I am in the 9th Congressional District of Washington and will be voting for Steven Cofchin (R). However, if I lived in the 6th Congressional District, I’d be voting for Doug Cloud (R).

Friend and co-worker, Paul, sent me a link to Cloud’s website when he found that Cloud promises to follow former US Senator Harry P. Cain’s 10 Commandments

1. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
2. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
3. You cannot help small men by tearing big men down.
4. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
5. You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
6. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income.
7. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
8. You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money.
9. You cannot build character and courage by taking away a man’s initiative.
10. You cannot really help men by having the government tax them to do for them what they can and should do for themselves.

Sounds like a good man to me. I dare any Democrat anywhere in the nation make the same promise.

For a quick look into the history of Harry P. Cain, here is a Wiki page that I found to be quite accurate. Let me just add that he served alongside Warren G. Magnuson (D) and was succeeded by Henry “Scoop” Jackson (D).

Of course, this was back when the (D) stood for “Strong on (D)efense”. Unlike today, when it stands for “(D)ipshit”.

Democrat says Vote Republican — for sake of War on Terror

Bumped

And no less a Democrat than Orson Scott Card. Yes, that Orson Scott Card, he of Ender’s Game fame (and a lot of other books, too; Songmaster was one of my mentor David Pool’s favorites — it has a lot of “inside baseball” about vocal technique and what it takes to be a master-class singer). Card writes:

I say this as a Democrat, for whom the Republican domination of government threatens many values that I hold to be important to America’s role as a light among nations.

But there are no values that matter to me that will not be gravely endangered if we lose this war. And since the Democratic Party seems hellbent on losing it — and in the most damaging possible way — I have no choice but to advocate that my party be kept from getting its hands on the reins of national power, until it proves itself once again to be capable of recognizing our core national interests instead of its own temporary partisan advantages.

Read the whole thing.

Oh yeah, his new book Empire looks like it might be worth checking out. Sounds similar to what Rivrdog‘s been warning us to preparing for.

A Change of Ways

But a minor one at best.

Now that I’m back to full-time blogging, I’ll be coming back with the posts that come with dates, such as the Quotes of the Day and the “Dumbest Thing I’ve Read All Day” category, which is now be it’s own category, but with a name change. Which is the reason for this post.

But first, a short story:

RNS EtherDeity, Craig at MT Politics, posted this a couple weeks back. For those not wanting to click on a blind link, it is a two-fer of Weird Al Yankovic music videos from You Tube. I, of course, had to watch them, ad nauseum, to the wife’s dismay (she has no sense of the absurd being hilarious)

This led to the reaccounting of my Weird Al collection of music, which I found lacking, and what followed was me downloading what I could and buying what I couldn’t over this last week I had off, again, to the wife’s dismay.

Now that I have listened to the catalog through at least twice, I have decided that not only do I find Al’s earlier stuff even more funny than I did in junior high and high school, because age has let me gather the knowledge to get more of the references, but also to change the title of the “Dumbest Thing I’ve Read All Day” posts. Said posts will now be known as the “Dare to Be Stupid” posts and will be awarded every day that I find someone who has so dared.

For those schooled in Weird Al tunage, you will get the reference. For those not as fortunate, here is the reference

Dare To Be Stupid – Weird Al Yankovic

You have been warned.

Dare To Be Stupid: 11/06/06

In this first post under the new title, I want to post something I found the Friday before my vacation but decided to hold onto until I could give it a proper release, which is today.

You may remember back a few weeks when I posted about a citizen who defended himself from a crazed and probably drug addled attacker in the downtown Seattle shopping area of Westlake (here, here and here).

Quick recap: Innocent pedestrian was physically attacked by Daniel Culotti, a convicted arsonist with a deep history of drug offenses and mental health issues. Said citizen attempted to fight back but was knocked to the ground by the larger Culotti and at that time pulled his concealed pistol and fired one shot at Culotti, killing him.

In the ever increasingly whiny Seattle, Culotti’s Uncle, Joseph Culotti, wrote a letter to the Seattle Times calling the citizen who was defending himself against Daniel Culotti’s overwhelming attack “A Misguided Man With A Gun.”

Normally, I would just sit back and let a grieving relative say their piece, but not in this case. Joeseph Culotti is either horribly misinformed or a complete and utter liar.

In all press reports out of Seattle, it was stated quite plainly from the police reports on the incident that the unnamed citizen resisted Daniel Culotti’s attacks with his hands AFTER Culotti picked him out of a crowd and screamed that he was going to kill him. It was only after the citizen was knocked to the ground and the attack did not cease that he pulled his weapon and used it to defend his life.

Which is where Joeseph gains either his “Ignorant” and/or “Liar” title.

In his letter, he claims that the unnamed citizen did not fight back at all and that his first instinct was to shoot.

Most normal people would respond by instinctively running or using their hands to defend themselves.

However, the shooter was not what we would think of as normal — he was carrying a gun and his immediate instinct was to shoot his attacker.

I’m waiting for the letter explaining why he never let his violently criminal nephew live with him in Toronto, where they have such wonderful mental heath care services, after Daniel Culotti burned down his mother’s house (which was an occupied as a daycare at the time) so that Daniel could get the care he needed.

We’ll never know whether Joeseph Culotti is an ignorant sod or a bald-faced liar, unless he Googles his name and stops by, at which time he can explain himself. But whatever his excuse, it is undeniable that he has dared to be stupid.
