Why I’ll never be a Republican

I have a natural aversion to groups. Lemming-ism, is what I call it. Even if said group isn’t heading over the cliff at this particular moment in time, they will sooner or later. I’ll head over a cliff when I’m damn well good and ready, TYVM, and not when everyone else does.

Plus, there is the Group-Think mantra, where everyone has to say the same thing, the same way or else they’re subjected to everything from dirty looks to ostracism. And when the group does stupid things like back an idiot, even going so far as to talk about changing the Constitution so that he may rise into national politics, my spidey senses go off and I get weirded out.

When that idiot goes and does things like this, I want to ask all of those who wanted to change the Constitution for him exactly what the fuck they were thinking.

People who refuse to obtain health insurance could be tracked down by the state or a private contractor, enrolled in a plan and fined until they pay their premiums under one proposal Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s administration is considering as part of his vision for covering all Californians.

The proposal, which administration aides said was one of many the governor was considering, was presented at a meeting Tuesday with representatives from insurers, hospitals, doctors, business groups and consumer advocates.

It drew immediate criticism from critics of the central tenet of Schwarzenegger’s healthcare approach, which is to require all Californians to obtain insurance.

The whole mandated “heathcare” idea was insipid enough to begin with, but now to even consider an enforcement department makes me want to move the hand on my personal doomsday clock.

Yes, I know this is happeneing in California and not Washington; but what happens there makes its way here in just a few short years.

So go find a “Ah-nold for President” asshole and ask them “What the fuck were you thinking” for me, mmm-kay?

Another bit of establishment politics that if find deserving of spite is when a decidedly Republican publication goes and says stupid things like this

0407_250[1].jpg

Romney is the new Reagan? When the fuck did that happen? The guy is as bad, if not worse, than Ah-nold. He couldn’t position himself out of a paperbag. And if he did manage to come out as pro-this,that or the other, it probably wouldn’t be a fiscally conservative position.

Granted, last Friday Michael Reagan wrote a piece about how Fred Thompson is looking in the race (even though the guy isn’t even technically running yet), but it was just a fluff piece. While it wasn’t really negative, it wasn’t positive either.

But group-think is usually pretty rampant at NewsMax. Which is why you don’t see too many links from here to there.

The Fred Thompson Interview You Want to Read About

It’s right here. Lots of moments in this article that will leave you grinning from ear to ear if you’re a Thompson fan, including Bill Frist’s “slip” admitting that Thompson’s going to be announcing. Really!

FYI

Sorry about the lack of posting from me yesterday. I got home so late that I’m pretty sure most of y’all were through here before I pulled into the driveway, so you’d have been reading it today anyway.

Bad news: The RNS Tacoma Blogstation is getting revamped (or as The Wife keeps saying “redecorated”).

I’ve tired of the current desk as it is a clutter magnet, so away it will go. The previous Blogstation desk, which has survived it’s stint as a firearms cleaning station will be coming back into use, so no more posts from me today.

Good news: Rangeday! Pics tomorrow.

More bad news: According to my sources, Professor Booty has left this plane of existence. A final report will be filed, hopefully, next weekend. I am still awaiting details of his adventure with Mack Sauer, from Mr. Sauer (he is being very tight lipped about the whole thing).

See ya tomorrow.

Shelf Life Updates

Goin’ thru the ol’ BOBs and car survival kits today, and sure enough I realized I hadn’t rotated a few things. I pulled out eight bags of various types of Pacific Gold jerky, “best by” date 09/06, bought in 2005 sometime IIRC (from Costco, naturally).

I did a taste and texture test of an “Original” bag against the exact same bagsOfJerky.jpgproduct, bought last week (“best by” date in 2008). Aside from being a little drier than the stuff I bought last week, the stored jerky seems just fine even after sitting in bugout bags in the trunk or cab of various cars for the past couple of years, and enduring the extremes of heat and cold that California car interiors go through.sunmaid_logo.jpg

I also pulled out a couple of five-pound foil bags of Sun-Maid raisins, again purchased from Costco in 2005, expiration dates in 2006. I tucked into ’em by the handful, and they seem just as delicious as fresh raisins.

This last one isn’t in the survival kits, but it’s more of a Good to Know item: when I got my first job out of college in 1992, I went out to Costco and bought five six-packs of Edge shaving gel. (The image is of their current Edge Gel.jpgproduct, but it looks almost the same as what I have). Little did I realize that a little gel goes a long way. That, law school, and working for companies that didn’t require me to shave every day means that I still have about twelve of these cans. So this gel is fifteen years old and still works great — the cans have pressure, the gel foams up nicely, and it seems to work the same as it always has. This is some good stuff to stock. I have no idea if Costco still carries it, as I obviously haven’t shopped for shaving cream in a very long time.

Weather-by Weekend

…in more ways than one. I’d planned to hit the range today and tomorrow to verify zeros on the Weatherby and Sako rifles I’ll be taking to Boomershoot, but we actually have some weather down here in the Bay Area, and somehow in the last twenty years I’ve turned into a weather wimp. It’s raining here, so no range for me today! Sunny tomorrow though, so I should have a range report early next week.

I picked up some of the remaining gear for Boomershoot. Three of these bouncy Sniper Training Cubes should arrive next week. I got one each in red, yellow and blue because I really have no idea what color will sniper_cube_1.jpgshow up best on a grassy hillside. They’re pricey, but I saved up for ’em. I want to be sure of my zeros because once we put them out next to the steel at Gene Econ’s clinic, it will be mighty embarrassing if Phil and I can’t make them bounce.

Tomorrow or next weekend I plan on assembling the Gazebo I’d planned on bringing last year, as well as scraping the last of the rust off of my bench and getting it back in shape.Boomershoot Canopy 1.jpgBoomershoot Canopy 2.jpg And next weekend I’ll be checking zeros on the specialty pistols that I’m taking this year. So there’s a lot to do.

Oh, yeah, there’s something about filing taxes…? Gotta fit that in somewhere.

Hello Colorado!

Are you ready!?!

I can’t hear you! I said Are You Ready!?!

Well then get ready for Global Warming Up Your Ass!

A Pacific storm system that pounded the West Coast earlier this week will progress eastward on Wednesday, bringing snow to parts of the Rockies and rain to other areas in the country’s midsection.

Colorado and Wyoming, in particular, could get heavy snow, with forecasts calling for 6 to 12 inches in lower elevations and up to 2 feet in the mountains.

Mustaine-era Metallica fans will get the reference.

RNS Quote of the Day: 04/13/07

Today’s quote was inspired by an email sent to me by our good man BIG at the TargetRichEnvironment Blog.

It seems as though I have pissed someone off enough to want to see the who, what and where on little ‘ol me.

searchterms1a.jpg

My first candidate for this would be our illiterate SDS member from earlier this week. The second would be Matt Travis, the guy whose Letter to the Editor I mocked last week. The third, and least likely candidate, is a fellow whom I have been conversating with lately named Bill. I’m pretty sure that he didn’t like my dismissal of some chucklehead at a local leftist blog who blamed the gun for the recent University of Washington shooting.

So let me just lay this out before we get to the quote: Whomever you might be, if you’re local and if’n you really want to know who Phil from Random Nuclear Strikes is, I’ll be at the Champion Arms pistol range in Kent tonight around 1800 PST, picking up something from the smith there. Stop by and say hi.

Which leads me to the quote.

While all three of our contestants are probably not admirers of this former President, they should take heed of his words

Those who hate you don’t win unless you hate them, and then you destroy yourself.

Richard M. Nixon

Showing up tonight with non-peaceful intent would be considered by most sentient beings as “destroying oneself”.

Thank you , and have a good Friday the 13th.

Need a laugh?

Then check this Letter to the Editor from the Seattle Times out.

Support candidates who worked for everything they haven’t gotten

I see Democratic candidate for president Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., raised $23.5 million without using PACs or big donors; 100,000 donors — wow. [“Obama gives Clinton a run for the money,” News, April 5, and “With $26 million, Clinton holds huge lead in early fundraising,” News, April 2.]

Not one lead story in the past few weeks on the amazing turnout for rallies this guy is holding all over the country? The largest voter-funded campaign in history is certainly less interesting than a person who was given all their wealth, telling us how to engineer our society into their vision of a brave new future. Apparently, unless you have a huge mansion and are preaching global warming, you don’t get big headlines.

In this future, I bet they still live in huge mansions but Al Gore’s old friends, the Chinese and Native Americans, rage unchecked, polluting exponentially; while I am working two jobs to cover my carbon credits.

Choose someone who worked their way to the top: BaROCK the vote!

Paul Suver, Seattle

Yes, this guy is actually complaining that Barak Obama is not getting enough media coverage.

I do wonder if Mr. Suver could enlighten me as to Obama’s stances on topics such as: Defense, Abortion, Civil rights (including firearms ownership), Foreign policy and the drug war.

Oh wait, I forgot. People like Obama because he does have stances on tough issues. Nevermind, Suver.

Et Tu, Deano

As the DNC Chair, I would think he would be smarter than to say something like this:

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean today demanded an end to Republican efforts to play politics with voting rights after two recent New York Times reports outlined a persistent campaign by Bush Administration officials to undermine fundamental voting rights for countless Americans. Dean’s comments come as recent reports have highlighted a five-year political campaign by Bush Republicans in the Justice Department, the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) and the White House to trump up charges of voter fraud in order to pursue restrictive voter ID laws that disproportionately disenfranchise minority, senior, student and disabled voters.

But apparently not.

Whch party had large numbers of its operatives arrested, tried and convicted of hindering voters the last couple go-arounds?

It certainly doesn’t have a name that begins with “R”.

And I do love how, in the very last go-around, there were magically no post-election allegations of voter fraud from the left.

Coincidence?

The AK-47 is not a device of aggression … I devised this machine-gun for the security of my country.
