Self Defense Examples

A big thankee to Texas Red for dropping a link to the Appalachian School of Law shooting where two atudents went to their cars, retrieved their firearms and held the shooter at gun point for authorities.

Uncle also put out an alert for newsstories of this nature. He and his readers were able to come up with a total of eight, including the Appalachian example, as well as Tacoma Mall hero, Dan McKown.

Spread the word folks. In fact, I’ll be “Winning the Special Olypmics” for the rest of this morning

(For those not familiar with the above phrase, it is derived from the longer saying “Arguing on the internet is like winning the special Olympics. So what if you win, you’re still retarded.” I am bound and determined to get one of these leftards to admit that no idea that they could come up with for gun control, even total and complete registration of all firearms, would have stopped the murders at Viginia Tech)

For more inspiration as to my motives, I give you a link to today’s Seattle Times “Letters to the Editor”

There are seven letters on the topic of the murders; Five of them explicitly say that firearms are bad, one of them talks about violent video games and another talks about Iraq.

Not a single pro-self defense letter in the bunch.

Why am I not surprised? This is Seattle.

I am ashamed of my profession

Teachers and students had identified the shooter well beforehand as a disturbing and potentially dangerous individual, but…

A professor warned authorities about Virginia Tech mass murderer Cho Seung-Hui after the student turned in violent creative writing pieces and exhibited troubling behavior, but she was told intervention would require overcoming too many legal hurdles. –WorldNetDaily article

And this:

Roy, now the alumni distinguished professor of English and co-director of the creative writing program, said university officials were responsive and sympathetic to her warnings but indicated that because Cho had made no direct threats, there was little they could do.

“I don’t want to be accusatory or blaming other people,” Roy said. “I do just want to say, though, it’s such a shame if people don’t listen very carefully and if the law constricts them so that they can’t do what is best for the student.”

–Washington Post article

Emphasis mine in both excerpts.

It makes me sick that the threat of litigation is so pervasive that it stops people from doing the right thing. Yes, I know, it’s an old story, but now it’s killed people. I’m no litigator, but that doesn’t matter. I’m ashamed to be a lawyer right now.

Some words on the murders involving a firearm from yesterday

It was with a heavy heart that I tried to sleep yesterday after watching the news about the murders break. I say “with a heavy heart” as an American and as a firearms owner.

However, I do not say it for the reasons those who would disarm you and would appreciate.

I say it for the people who were murdered and injured by a man with a firearm. The people who were denied their Second Amendment civil right to self-defense by a college administration hell bent on making people “feel safe” while actually putting them in more danger. And on top of that, I say it for those people who were murdered and injured by a college administration so incompetent that they only sent out emails covering the early shooting, and then when their constabulary couldn’t find the murderer, took the campus out of lockdown and proceeded on with the course day.

Both of these gross mistakes led to the creation of ready prey for a homicidal person with a weapon.

Quickly, before any anti-civil rights leftard wanders on over here and tries to say that I am politicizing the event, please refer to this statement from the Brady Bunch. You may leave a comment only after I receive a CC of your email to the Brady’s, chastizing them for doing so. All comments of that nature without a proper CC in my inbox will be deleted without regard to your feelings. (FYI: email addys are at the top of the right hand column)

No substitutions will be allowed. Even if you write to Jabberin’ John Aravosis about the disgustingly written post calling for more gun control before I fell asleep, and his vomiting on the murder victims in this follow-up post comparing the number of dead at Virginia Tech to “a good day” in Iraq.

Update: Now that the police are letting loose with the identity of the vicitm and his murder weapon/s (most reports are saying two, but it is still a bit unclear). He was under the care of a doctor and taking anti-depressants, and therefor unable to purchase firearms. He somehow purchased at least one stolen pistol (its serial numbers having been ground off gives that away).

So I am sure that we will now hear the cry for harsher sentences for criminals who commit property crimes such as burglary and larceny from those whose hearts are bleeding for more gun control, right?. OK, that will never happen.

The comments from Pelosi and Reid have so far been without calls for new firearms legislation, but that would probably be just them finding an ounce of taste. This is going to be in the news for the next few weeks, and it will only get worse. All the headway we have made over the last six years may be in jeopardy.

When you talk to folks about this in the future, do make sure to point out that the state legislature of Virginia was in the process of finally giving them their civil right to self-defense, but it was stopped in sub-committee by gun bigots.

At the dKos Animal Farm and Petting Zoo, diarist “Deep Harm” is celebrating that this one piece of legislation that would have given these students and faculty the ability to defend themselves was shut down.

A couple of comments for your reading pleasure:

guns need to be entirely banned in my opinion. Republicans are absolutely sick people for trying to put guns on college campuses. NBC4 in DC tonight reported that some lunatic gun-nuts were arguing that only if other students had guns, this would’ve been prevented. Yeah, exactly what we need, firefights to settle scores at school. Un-freaking believable.

And

The NRA doesn’t exist to maintain “gun rights” whatever that means.

The NRA exists to diffuse any legislation, thwart it, negotiate the teeth out of it, so that the legislation is pointless, but then let it become law.

Gun manufacturors are then able to peddle their unsafe products and make tons of money. Nobody’s “gun rights” are protected, and nobody is protected from “gun owners”.

I’d say put the top 100 NRA lobbyists and governing body in Gitmo. Shoot them until they realize guns are unsafe.

And if you want to see a textbook 2A discussion when the left is running the show, head on over to this post by Oliver Willis (Occupation: Toole). Straw men and hyperbole abound and all reasonable thought is treated as paranoia and other such madness.

But the largest reason I worry that this may turn into America’s “Dunblane” is because of a conversation I had before leaving work this morning.

Quick update: Due to recent events at my place of employ, I no longer have “the Gun Bigot” for a boss. Before you celebrate, his replacement is a “Phil Bigot”. Maybe more on this in the future.

Anyway, one of my less than Second Amendment loving co-workers walks into my office and asks if I had seen the news about the murders (I label him as “less than 2A loving” because he is about as close to a gun bigot as you can get without actually giving $$$ to the Brady’s). He doesn’t like firearms, won’t hang around if myself and others are talking about them and is an all-around wet diaper whenever hunting season comes around.

After getting a negative response when I asked if he had known anyone involved or even over there, I replied that I did watch some of the coverage yesterday and he goes on to ask me what I feel about it. Having already read about the legislature’s attempt in 2006, I respond by saying that if VT hadn’t been a “gun free zone”, maybe the murderer wouldn’t have felt comfortable enough to kill multiple victims in multiple locations (the original dorm room murders, then across campus through four classrooms and a stairway).

I told him about the teacher at a law school a couple years back, though I do not remember the name of the school (leave links in the comments if you do), who stopped a former student with a firearm just by brandishing his own pistol after retreiving it from his car.

I should have known that I was being set up, but I said those things anyway.

My co-worker cut loose on me, shouting that it was people like myself who are responsible for these murders. By demanding our civil rights (though that is not what he called them), we now all have 32 more sets of blood on our hands.

While not exactly shocked at this, I was abit taken aback as he is normally a level-headed sort of fella.

He then went on to yell about how more firearms in the hands of law abiding citizens (though that is not what he called us) would only lead to more shoot outs over seats in theaters and other such nonsense.

It was as though he had spent the night looking up and memorizing every single bit of gun bigot propaganda. Then, when meeting his first known “gun-nut” of the day, felt the need to fire the bigot-cannon at them.

When he finally got done yelling in my general direction, I said just about exactly that. I completed my return statement by asking if he was going to be safe to drive a 60,000 truck that day if he was going to be this over-the-top at 0500 in the morning about something that happened the day before and in no way involved him.

Just as I was finishing my statement, another of our co-workers, also a driver, came into the office, stating that he had heard the shouting and wanted to make sure everything was OK. I explained that the first driver was just telling me about how recent events had upset him and we were discussing the possibility of him going home for the day.

He did end up going home, and I’m expecting an apology tomorrow morning, though I’m not sure I’ll get it. I know I should have stuck to facts and not questioned his mental stability so blatantly, but I don’t really give a shit right now after that.

This guy is going to vote for whomever he is going to vote for. I’m not out to change minds of the mentally feeble. I don’t have the time or the energy these days. The company AR Build Club is still ongoing with a first build target date of mid-May, and has even expanded to include two more enrollees.

I’m not sure if yesterday’s events pushed the guy over the top of something that has been building, or what; but if other gunnies are having to deal with people like this, it makes me worry more than just a bit.

RNS Quote of the Day: 04/17/07

Many people mistakenly see weapons as the source of crime rather than a reaction to it. This is rather like blaming your flat tire on the spare you carry in the trunk.

In Case You Missed It

The inmates at the Kos Animal Farm and Petting Zoo have been borrowing Neo-Nazi anti-Semetic Propaganda again.

Make sure you click on the link to go over to dKos and read the comments. They know it is anti-Semetic and they’re still swallowing every word.

When you get a Global Warming Death Cultist talking about being “anti-corporation” or “anti-big business”, just toss in a word about the lobbyists and you’ll get this same bile.

BAG Day purchases and Range Report

My BAG Day purcahse was not a firearm. It is, however, a firearm accessory. So despite what the purists may say, I’m counting The Hun Bastard’s Fero Z24 scope as my BAG Day purcahse. Add that to the 1000rnds of high quality 7.62×51 and .22-250 ammo and I think I’ve done my part.

As for folks I know who don’t have to make excuses (and have posted pics):

The Reasonable Nut’s Old Man picked up this Anniversary Edition S&W Model 629

IMG_0001.jpg

Sweet. Now he’ll have to get a lever action companion gun next year.

Jim of Smoke on the Water blog fame participated as well. And if I do say so myself, he has exceleent taste.

The Hun Bastard
P4160001a.JPG

Speaking of The Hun Bastard, yes, I made it to the range yesterday, though call it it was a comedy of errors would be putting it lightly. Among the list of forgotten items were: Targets, staplegun, any kind of ear protection. They were in my pistol shooting box from when I went to the range on Friday afternoon.

With bits of napkin stuffed in my ear canals, my junk mail as targets (because I went to the mailbox on the way to the range) and a lucky find of pushpins in the travel tool box, I made do.

Oh yeah, and I forgot the camera too. So the above pic was taken after the cleaning session. Hopefully it is better than the previous crappy one.

I tried out a new range yesterday. The Tacoma Sportsmen’s Club, which is not in Tacoma, but the Puyallup micro-burg of Fredrickson. After hitting their website for a map and hours of operation, I rolled on out. Nice enough folks, even if they shoot a bit too many clays for my appreciation.

The $6 payment for non-members isn’t bad at all and it is on an honor system with an unattended booth and envelopes going into a lockbox. The range does have a master who calls for target change breaks and keeps an eye out for safety violations (there weren’t any while I was there).

While they do a lot of skeet and trap at TSC, I was glad to see that I received no scowls when I revealed The Hun from his case. I did get a couple stares and even a “What exactly is that?”, but no one treated me as less of a shooter, as I have had happen at other ranges.

About the only thing I could complain about is the “Keep this gate closed” policy they have for the gate to the rifle & pistol ranges, but that is understandable with the Honor System thing they have going on. Also, they have a 600yd distance available, but it is only for organized matches held a couple times a year. 200yds max for daily operations (the guys taking money for the skeet range when I asked for directions didn’t even know about it). Looks like I’ll have to try out Nisqually. Also, they could take some of their excess gravel and put it on the walking path for the rifle range to keeps my feets out of the mud.

Lastly, showing up at the opening bell doesn’t help you get a bench on the weekends. I rolled in and there were 16 people waiting for 10 benches. I’m not saying there are too many shooters in the area, I’m just saying that if they would grade some of the hillside to the south side (moderate sized creek on the north side) they could double their capacity and meet the demand and quite possibly expand the profits of their rifle range business.

But that is just a quibble. TSC is, all in all, not a bad place to shoot. I’ll be back.

After about an hour wait, I got my bench and got the zero for the Hun. My German sucks and with the scope having been manufactured for Kraut soldiers, I was left to take educated guesses as to what the markings on the controls meant. After a little trial and error, the gun was sighted in.

Next, I rechecked the zero on both Barak and the .22-250. I’m glad I decided to do so because I forgot to reset my scopes to 100yds last time out and POI was hitting a bit high.

Sorry for no range pics. But Boomershoot is two weeks away and you won’t be able to get away from them then.

Lastly, I didn’t get the reorganization of the Tacoma Blogstation completed due to a need for some shut-eye (this is a weekend after all), so I will try to finish it before next weekend so as to not burn my time-off doing it then.

RNS Quote of the Day: 04/16/07

With the posting of the pics of The Hun Bastard last week, I got an email or two asking why I chose it over an M1A. We’ve had our discussions. I’ve given my reasons, and they have given theirs.

One of the writers brought up author, Boston T. Party, and his “discovery” of the M1A as the best battle rifle of the bunch in his latest edition, when comparing it with the HK-91 clones, the various FAL’s and the M1 Garand. This is a bad thing to do, as I have read the guy’s books as well. You see, there is this one quote that negates all the prettiness of the M1A.

However the critics denounce the HK-91, even they must admit that the rifle works. No other rifle came close to matching the 91’s brute reliability. It also does not break – ever – and can be neglected with little risk of failure (I mean, the Mexican Army carries them, if that tells you anything!).

I now own one for my “End of the World” battle rifle.

To which can only be added, is there any other kind of battle rifle?

Seriously, if you are having to defend you and yours with a your MBR, hasn’t the end of the world arrived, at least for you? You won’t be able to get parts and you may have little to zero time for maintenance. When the battle rifle comes out, it is “Run What You Brung” time, folks.

We’ve spoken about this: Whether it is brigands trying to get into your home or your friendly federal constable asking for you to hand it over, the world is not a nice place and I don’t want my #1 means of protection to be picky about it’s food or deciding that it never really liked that extractor in the first place.

“The World” may not be about to end, but “Yours” might be. Why let sentimentality get in the way?

Being a conformist pays off in Washington: Part 2

Back at the end of March I posted about how Washington State employees who are non-members of the Washington Federation of State Employees Union would be getting their pay raises two months later than members would.

If that sounds weird, here’s the skinny: If you are a state employee, but do not want to join the WFSEU, you don’t have to; but you still have to give them dues money to keep your job.

Yeah, sweet gig for the union, right? You have to pay them in order to have your job.

Oh yeah, and splitting that pay increase between union and non-union members cost the citizens of Washington a smooth $8 Million to implement.

Yeah, sucks to be me.

So anyway, now the union members are going to get a “refund” of $756 for overpayment of health care premiums. Which would be fair, except for the fact that non-union members aren’t getting one cent back, while union members who opted out of the healthcare plan, and therefor didn’t pay into it, are still going to get the $756 check.

It’s like the state is giving a big pressed ham to the non-union members at every possible instance. It’s like they’re trying to piss them off so badly that they’ll join the union for the free money.

Which is bad enough in itself, but this is my money they’re talking about here. If the people didn’t overpay, then they shouldn’t get any “overpayment” money.

But you know, if they hadn’t let the union demand payment from the non-members, I probably wouldn’t be so pissed off.

Where else do you have to pay an extortion fee to work?

Fucking socialists.

That’s “Progressivism” for you!

Your ID, Citizen

Washington may be fighting the Real ID requirement, but they like the idea itself

Traffic citations across Washington state soon will be paperless.

The State Patrol and at least one Western Washington police department have begun scanning bar codes on driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations to get information needed to create traffic citations, according to the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC). The scanned information is automatically transferred to the courts. Alleged offenders get copies of citations but no longer are required to sign them.

“It’s sort of like taking a page out of the UPS [United Parcel Service] guy,” said Don Pierce, executive director of WASPC.

In recent weeks, troopers in King, Pierce, Thurston, Spokane and Kitsap counties and officers in Lacey, Thurston County, have begun using the system. Other agencies across the state are expected to incorporate the program eventually.

Ahh yes, that is how I wanted to be looked at by my government: A package to be scanned.

Will that be before or after my being shipped off for not being “progressive” enough?
