RNS Quote of the Day: 04/23/07

To my mind it is wholly irresponsible to go into the world incapable of preventing violence, injury, crime, and death. How feeble is the mindset to accept defenselessness. How unnatural. How cheap. How cowardly. How pathetic.

Ted Nugent

Sorry for the radio silence here at RNS over the weekend. I’ve been getting ready for Boomershoot; buying up last minute items (including, apparently, the last box of CCI Stingers in the county) and getting by workplace ready for my departure (which means long hours writing down as many proceedures as I can remember).

David and I will be leaving for Boomershoot on Thursday, and actually he’ll be hitting the road Tuesday for some serious RoadDog hours driving up here from the Bay Area. Joe says he had wireless internet on site at Boomershoot, but I don’t have a wireless card for my laptop. I also do not know what Trib’s has for internet these days, but last time it was 32K dial-up. Basically, I don’t know what we’ll be able to post between Thursday and Monday, so I’ll be tossign a few things like QotD into the “Dealyed Posting” file and hoping for the best.

More on this tomorrow.

One week ago today

A madman went on a rampage with a pair of handguns at Virginia Tech.

We have learned a lot about the victims and a lot about the murderer since then. We have also been feed a lot of bullshit as well.

One of the larger chunks of stool we have had to contend with was that the murderer used “high capacity” magazines during his murderous walk, with MSNBC claiming that unnamed “officials” stated he had 33 round magazines for the Glock pistol.

As Ace states here, we should find it odd that in all of the photos and footage the murderer sent to NBC, not one single picture shows these magazines. The murderer took so-called “artistic” pics of his HP ammo and even more of himself all ninja’d up, but these supposedly extra special (and rather costly) magazines never made it into a single picture?

Get real. I also find it suspect that they couldn’t get one “official” to put his name to that quote. After all, speaking of the HP ammo, they were able to get the name of a lying former BATFElcher into their newsstory that contained the second largest stool sample of the week:

In the photos Cho sent to NBC, he showed some of his ammunition — hollow-point rounds, purchased, officials say, in the weeks before the shootings. Law enforcement officials say hollow-points are generally considered more lethal.

Joseph Vince, a retired ATF agent, agrees.

“It’s not something that you would need for home protection, because what you are trying to do is eliminate an immediate threat,” Vince says. “The idea of killing is what this ammunition portrays to me.”

Of course, no one at MSNBC thought to ask former agent Vince why his former employer uses HP ammo exclusively in their handguns and submachine pistols. I would truly have loved to hear fomer agent Vince explain, if HP ammo is used only for killing, why his agency only wants to kill those they shoot?

But by and far, the largest turd American firearms owners have had to swallow so far is that “This Only Happens in America”.

Steve Stanek at TCS gives us the truthful line on that subject:

In response to the horrible mass shooting at Virginia Tech on Monday, overseas leaders as well as many Americans have condemned the “gun culture” of the United States. Perhaps these overseas leaders and American citizens would be less hard on our country if we discuss what has been happening in other countries.

Major news outlets reported on April 18 about the shooting deaths of at least 19 gang members in Rio de Janeiro by rival gangs and police. These shootouts occurred despite Brazil’s strict gun control laws.

Also in Wednesday’s newspapers are reports about Tuesday’s shooting death of the mayor of Nagasaki, Japan. Japan has some of the strictest anti-gun laws in the industrialized world.

In Scotland authorities are enacting knife control policies because violent crime has continued to climb (with knives as a weapon of choice) in the wake of the nation’s gun bans. Should Americans speak contemptuously of Scotland’s “blade and booze” culture?

Stanek has more examples in his article.

Another line that has been taken by the media is that Vriginia had not told the FBI that the murderer was mentally disturbed. This lead to a number of stories about how the previously “top of the line” and “absolutely neccessary” NICS system is now broken and that additional legislation is required to strengthen it.

We even entered into a discussion here about proposed legislation, with David finding a couple of old federal bills wallowing around in Congress that their proponents claim would have stopped this. Maybe they would havem but they would have also led to some very frightening legal terms being introduced into the ownership of firearms law.

Which leads me to the very scary bit of news that the federal government has been compiling records of folks who use a pharmacist (that means everyone).

President Bush signed into law a bill to create electronic monitoring programs to prevent the abuse of prescription drugs in all 50 states.

The new law creates a grant program for states to create databases and enhance existing ones in hopes of ending the practice of “doctor shopping” by drug abusers seeking multiple prescriptions. It would authorize $60 million for the program through fiscal 2010.

The feds looked on the database to see if the murderer had been perscribed anti-depressants in the past. No, he had not.

But don’t you feel safer knowing that they looked him up?

I know I don’t. There is nothing to stop them from tying this database into the firearms laws. Except for you and me.

Yes it is a tragedy that murders like the ones at Virginia Tech happen. But the last thing you want is to give your political opponents the ability to claim that you are mentally unfit to own firearms. As I wrote in the comments of David’s post, the next thing you know, anyone who believes they need a firearm for protection, especially if they claim to need protection from “the government” could, and in the future possibly would, be declared “paranoid” and have their gun rights stripped from them forever for as little as expressing an opinion.

An opinion that I think most folks around these parts share.

Whence I return from Boomershoot, I will be making the purchase of a “lifetime supply” of standard capacity magazines for all my firearms. I will also be purchasing as much HP ammo as I can. I remember what a gun-bigot ruled Congress did to my right to own firearms and their accessories in the name of “safety” and I’m not going to get pinched by either the feds or my state and local politicos again.

You might want to get ready as well. they are currently saying that there is nothing on the table at this time.

But, times change. And unfortunately, not everywhere is like Tennessee.

Boomershoot Prep, Continued

I’ve been occupied with preparations since Friday night. I’m sure Phil’s doing the same.

In my case, I finished disassembling my rusty bench and grinding off all of the rust (well, most of it anyway). Kroil worked great to unstick most stuck joints. Still don’t have any Cosmoline, so I sprayed everything down with a liberal coat of WD-40 before reassembling.

Then I dug out the Gazebo to assemble it. I hadn’t opened the package until yesterday and wanted to be sure everything was there. Sure enough, QC in China had fallen down on the job: the instructions indicated Part 2A was supposed to have a slot and retaining pin on one end. None of the six Part 2A pieces had any such thing, so I went to Home Depot for some industrial-strength cotter pins, hooked up the drill and made some holes. Now the rest of the Gazebo may fall down, but I am certain that all six joints where Part 2A meets the corner bracket will hold no matter what!

The Gazebo went together just fine, and there are lots of unexpectedly nifty design touches. For example, the screens are set up to open like curtains if you wish. Unfortunately, after disassembly, I couldn’t get everything back into the original bag. Oh well, found a substitute.

Next I had to drive 60 miles round trip to my gun dealers’ where I had a second Contender frame waiting for me. Picked that up, took it home, and only then realized that neither the frame nor the .223 barrel I had waiting for it had a hinge pin! This is sort of an important part where Contenders and Encores are concerned. Hopped on the ‘net, found the hinge pin dimensions, and spent way too long calculating that it worked out to 3/8″ diameter. Off to Home Depot again for some 3/8″ bar stock. Snapped one hacksaw blade cutting the makeshift pin. But it worked well enough to assemble the gun. Monday I’ll be calling around to see if anyone local has a factory pin in stock.

Today I have just got to get to the range….

How’s your weekend going?

Short Attention Span Theater

I have said it over and over again: “The folks on the left read the headlines and the first two paragraphs of a story, and that is all.”

Which is why the MSM fits them so perfectly; because the MSM can write all the bad stuff it wants and place it in the first couple paragraphs of a story, and then write all the actual facts in the lower half of the body of the story, where no one will read it. Then, when they remember reading the story, all the average person remembers is the headline and the little bit of it they read.

For instance:

On Monday, this story from E&P was atop 75% of the left wing blogs

Pew Survey Finds Most Knowledgeable Americans Watch ‘Daily Show’ and ‘Colbert’

A new survey of 1,502 adults released Sunday by Pew Research Center for the People & the Press found that despite the mass appeal of the Internet and cable news since a previous poll in 1989, Americans’ knowledge of national affairs has slipped a little. For example, only 69% know that Dick Cheney is vice president, while 74% could identify Dan Quayle in that post in 1989.

Other details are equally eye-opening. Pew judged the levels of knowledgeability (correct answers) among those surveyed and found that those who scored the highest were regular watchers of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show and Colbert Report. They tied with regular readers of major newspapers in the top spot — with 54% of them getting 2 out of 3 questions correct. Watchers of the Lehrer News Hour on PBS followed just behind.

Virtually bringing up the rear were regular watchers of Fox News. Only 1 in 3 could answer 2 out of 3 questions correctly. Fox topped only network morning show viewers.

Now, of course because The Daily Show and Colbert are decidedly left leaning shows and Fox is considered “The Right Wing Noise Machine” in the leftosphere, it was implied by the leftist blogs that Republicans are stupid. I think I even remember at least a couple saying that if this is why people voted for Bush, then maybe they could start to forgive some of them.

Forgive me? Asphincter sez what?

Anyway, if they would have read to the end of the artilce, only a couple more paragraphs further to go, they would have seen this line:

Men scored higher than women, and older Americans did better than younger, on average. Democrats and Republicans were about equally represented in the most knowledgeable group but there were more Democrats in the least aware group.

So now we have three choices to choose from

1. A large number of Dems are watching Fox.

2. A large number of Repubs are watching Comedy Central.

3. This survey full is of shit.

No matter which answer you choose, it just goes to prove that leftists cannot read.

Americans who value freedom had better be more concerned about the gun control crowd than the criminals. The criminals want your money. The Neo-Totalitarians want your freedom.

The Soubdboard: Needing It

More big sounds from Pendulum who mixed the disk today’s tunage came from together.

Since it is electronic, most folks on the planet will never hear it, but aside from the large sounds is a chorus that, if written and performed by Oasis a few years previous, would have made them enough cash to buy Swindon (and maybe even a bit of Bristol).

Living Daylights II – DJ Fresh

The disk is loaded with good stuff, some of which will make it to next week’s edition of The Soundboard

You can find the double album here.

Oh, and it even has kick ass cover art!

RNS Quote of the Day: 04/19/07

Foolish liberals who are trying to read the Second Amendment out of the Constitution by claiming it’s not an individual right or that it’s too much of a public safety hazard don’t see the danger in the big picture. They’re courting disaster by encouraging others to use the same means to eliminate portions of the constitution they don’t like.

The WRONG Legislation

Just like clockwork, here comes California legislator Leland Yee with a proposal to abolish life sentences without the possibility of parole for juvenile murderers, because, you know, we have to rehabilitate them.

Hey, FYI, Yee, officially, at least, California is still one of those states that does not consider rehabilitation to be the purpose of prison. Prison is for separating criminals from society.

Idiot.

Mentally Ill… but he still was able to buy guns

FINAL UPDATE: See comments below. I’m now not so sure the proposed Federal legislation is as well-drafted as it should be, based on similarities to HR 297.

UPDATE ON THE UPDATE: Michelle Malkin has a source within the Virginia mental health/justice system who says that because Cho was not hospitalized involuntarily, the Virginia statute did not require that he be reported to the Central Criminal Records Exchange, which I presume would have forwarded it to NICS. Her source notes:

Without more facts, I am not second guessing the decision of the Special Justice. Perhaps the code should be amended to require the report to be filed upon the finding of iminent danger to self or others, not just involuntary hospitalization.

SEE ALSO SailorCurt’s excellent comment to this post, below, with details of Virginia law. He points out that Virginia performs a state background check in addition to the Federal NICS check. Neither check flagged the shooter in this case, for the reason noted above.

UPDATE: Here’s the answer, the NICS system is indeed broken. If “something must be done” in the wake of this massacre, this Federal legislation seems like the best thing to rally behind. And it’s already supported by both the NRA and the Brady Bunch (and the NEA, sorry, it’s their writeup).

In short, according to the above link under the current system no state updates NICS with mental illness records. (!!!!!!!) The legislation would change that. Whan’s the last time you saw a bill supported by both Schumer and Larry Craig?

Okay, I think everyone reading this blog is familiar with the Big Three conditions of Federal law that are supposed to prevent you from being able to buy a gun: 1) you’re underage; 2) you’re a felon; 3) you’re mentally ill.

So WTF????

VT Killer Ruled Mentally Ill by Court; Let Go After
Hospital Visit
Harassed Two Female Students; Concerns He Was Suicidal
By NED POTTER and DAVID SCHOETZ
April 18, 2007 — – A Virginia court found that Virginia Tech killer Seung-Hui Cho was “mentally ill” and dangerous. Then, the state let him go.

In 2005, after a district court in Montgomery County ruled that Cho was either a danger to himself or to others — the legal criteria to obtain a detention order — he was evaluated by a state doctor and ordered to undergo outpatient care.

Read the whole thing; it shows in detail the repeated school – police interactions with this guy. Their process actually seems sound; VT was savvy enough to know that they will get more effective results using the state police 5150 system because it’s easier to get folks committed.

Lots of reporters, when they have a question about guns, they call the Brady people, which is like calling the Klan for information on the N.A.A.C.P.
