Zero tolerance policies actually make students feel less safe.
Now can we repeal all these idiotic rules and get back to showing some sense?

The rules aren’t about making students less safe. They are about administrators showing that they “did something” when (or after) something does go wrong.
“Look we had a zero-tolerance policy! We had phone trees! Never mind that we can’t enforce our policy and those who would break it were already planning to break the law!”
er… that should be “more safe” in my first sentence. Dang it.
Mollbot hit part of my riff on this: Zero-tolerance isn’t actually for student safety, it’s so administrators don’t have to actually, y’know, think and stuff and actually have to make reasoned decisions. So, “Hey, we followed the policy! So don’t yell at us!”
So a kid accidentally brings a craft knife to school and gets caught with it? Suspension or expulsion. Student gets to school and remembers it, follows the rules and turns it in? Suspension or expulsion. It really took Education Experts and liberals(but I repeat myself) to come up with this crap.
