Dog tries to drag dying owner to safety, gets euthanized. Would it have really cost that much to just impound the dog until after the coroner released his findings? I sometimes think our justice system is a bit too callous with regard to pets.

Narrow line there, MRS. Cross that “animals are equal to humans” line and we get into PETA’s moonbattery. Animals are a lower order. Some lower species have charming traits which benefit us, but at the end of the day, they are a lower order, we are superior, and by the natural law of selection we may impose ourselves on them. Change that rule and we slide down the slope of destroying our own specie’s advantage over the lower ones. Once on that downward slide, it is only a matter of time until our species is no longer superior, and some currently-lower species begins to impose IT’S will on us in that confused future.
I’m not suggesting we grant animals rights equal to humans (particularly since such rights also require the responsibilities that go along with it, which animals are incapable of). However, people have emotional ties to their pets, sometimes very powerful ties, and it really is time that our justice system remember that before making decisions regarding the lives of animals. There is more to consider than just the life of a lower animal.
Consider it a property rights issue. Would you be upset if the police found a body under your parked truck, complete with damage to your truck from the imapct of a body, and they destroyed the truck before the lab had a chance to determine if your truck actually hit the person, or if the person was somehow launched into your truck?
