When I was a sprog of five or six summers, my grandpappy worked for the State of SD Hiway Dept. In the winter he bolted a half track conversion supplied by said Dept. onto his 1932 Cornbinder Pickup. This would have been about 1949 or 1950. I remember riding with him across the snow covered prairie both on and off roads to deliver necessaries to snowbound ranchers and farmers and to clear county roads. The Halftrack conversion was much cheaper than buying even a war surplus 4×4 and had been in the local Hiway Dept. shop inventory since well before WWII. Talking to my Dad years later, he said it took the guys in the shop less than an hour to install or uninstall it. It would let you drive any 1/2 ton pickup anywhere a 4×4 would go and many places it would require a tank retriever to salvage that 4×4 when, not if, it got stuck. Grandpa started using it on a Model A Ford pickup, then went to the Cornbinder in later years.

What is old becomes new again.
