The Soundboard: The Sounds of Christmas

So Bush sent out his holiday greetings cards and actually called them that. Now he has all of the ‘Holier than Thou’ types saying that he has caved in to the Those Who Make The Baby Jesus Cry.

The guy sent cards to Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindis, probably a Zoroastrian or two and more than a couple of Muslims. What is he supposed to do, wish them a Merry Christmas and ignore their respective December holidays? Oh, I know, he was supposed to make culturally respective cards for each of the 1.4 million of them.

But all of that aside, what is wrong with the people who complained? The thing had Psalm 28:7 printed inside of it. Quoting biblical scripture isn’t ‘acting Christian enough’ these days I guess.

I hope none of these types stop by my place around this time of year. They’ll recoil in horror at my “Paganist Winter Solstice music.

For me, around this time of year you can keep your Cole and Crosby and Ives and I pretty much refuse to not shoot a radio playing a Christmas song written after I was born.

If you haven’t been reading RNS for more than a year, have a click at today’s Soundboard selection and the posts during the rest of the holiday season. I post these types of tunes every year because you can find the common stuff anywhere, but you’ll have to look hard to find these songs anywhere but here. I can guarantee that if I’m home and the Analog Wife doesn’t have the TV going, this is the kind of music that is being piped into every room in the house via the home stereo.

Airdi Cuan

Not altogether a Christmas song, but definitely one for the season. I won’t even attempt a rough translation of the Irish Gaelic, but let us just say that it is a song of wanting to go home to be with family, friends and familiar places.

Back in law school I had a brief fling with a woman who’d donated $15 to Bill Clinton waaay back when he was first running for prez and she was impressed by one of his speeches on C-Span. So in ’93 she got one of the “Friends of Bill” versions of the White House Christmas card, and liberal that she was, she was ecstatic that it was entirely secular. Not only did it say “Happy holidays” or some such bland greeting, but the picture was of Bill and Hillary in front of the White House tree. Not a cross or “Christmas” in view. Given the Clintons’ constituency, I figured that was about right.
