RNS Quote of the Day

If one wishes to advocate a free society – that is, capitalism – one must realize that its indispensable foundation is the principle of individual rights. If one wishes to uphold individual rights, one must realize that capitalism is the only system that can uphold and protect them. And if one wishes to gauge the relationship of freedom to the goals of today’s intellectuals, one may gauge it by the fact that the concept of individual rights is evaded, distorted, perverted and seldom discussed, most conspicuously seldom by the so-called “conservatives.

“Rights” are a moral concept – the concept that provides a logical transition from the principles guiding an individual’s actions to the principals guiding his relationship with others – the concept that preserves and protects individual morality in a social concept – the link between the moral code of a man and the legal code of a society, between ethics and politics.

Individual rights are the means of subordinating society to moral law.

Ayn Rand: Man’s Rights – 1967

The Fire Down Below

And by that I mean Oregon

Jerry the Geek has three very cool entries, with pics, of three very cool IPSC matches he competed in with his pals in Oregon.

The Croc Match

The Dundee Mudders

The Blue Sky Match

And not to be outdone, Mr. Completely posts on a couple matches he went to at the Central Whidbey Sportsman’s Association Range

Hanging Plate Shoot

10/08 Pin Shoot

And now on to other business:

Speaking of the CWSA and Mr. C, he and I are working on getting a Blogger Blasotrama set up for Sunday, the 30th of October. In fact, he’s already got a tentative schedule up for folks to see.

I would just like to put the feelers out to see how many PNW bloggers, blog readers and lurkers would like to and/or would be able to attend.

Here is the hook for the Blasto: It’s October so we’re gonna shoot us up some pumpkins!

I would also like to say that I will be bringing my box of pool cue chalks and Barak the Boomershoot rifle and some ammo for folks to try their hand at taking the little chalks out.

If you’d be interested in joining us, just write me at the e-mail addy in the sidebar or head on over to Mr. C’s place and get ahold of him.

RNS Quote of the Day

Remember that rights are moral principles which define and protect a man’s freedom of action, but impose no obligations on other men. Private citizens are not a threat to one another’s rights or freedom. A private citizen who resorts to physical force and violates the rights of others is a criminal – and men have legal protection against him.

Criminals are a small minority in any age or country. And the harm they have done to mankind is infinitesimal when compared to the horrors – the bloodshed, the wars, the persecutions, the confiscations, the famines, the enslavements, the wholesale destructions – perpetrated by mankind’s governments. Potentially, a government is the most dangerous threat to man’s rights: it holds a legal monopoly on the use of physical force against legally disarmed victims. When unlimited and unrestricted by individual rights, a government is man’s deadliest enemy. It is not as protection against private actions, but against government actions that the Bill of Rights was written.

Question of the Day

Not to be an ongoing feature, just something I tried to figure out last night as I ate my lunch.

When does soup become stew?

OK all you Carnival of Recipies folks, riddle me that!

Results: September Rifle e-Postal Match

At long last, I present to you the winners of last month’s edition of the internet firearms competition sensation that is sweeping the nation (or something).

First off, I’d like to thank all those who participated in September’s match and I hope that they’ll come and play with us again in the October match, that is conveniently laid out in the post below.

Since I’m the non-discriminatory type I accepted just about any entry in any class that was sent in. However, I will only be presenting awards in the classes that had sufficient contestants; four or more, to be exact.

The whole of the entries are listed, in class, below the fold, with links to their websites, if applicable.

While I hesitate to use the phrase “Everyone who competed is a winner, it is the truth in this case, since the goal here is to test and improve your shooting skills and I am impressed with everyone who took the opportunity to use my humble targets to test themselves.

And the winners in the competing classes are:

Winner: Iron Sight Pistol – 25yds

Merle Dan Wesson .357Mag – 85 1X

Winner: Iron Sight Rifle – 50yds

Firehand M1 Garand – .30-06 – 91 0X

Winner: Optical Sight Rifle (non-magnifying) – 50yds

Mr. Completely Hi-Point 9mm – Red Dot – 93 1X

Optical Sight (magnifying) – 100yds

Freddy B R77 .308 – 97 4X (minor bit of confusion here, Con UAW Guy’s friend actually shot the winning target – (Correction Dept.)

You guys will be getting your certificates in the email shortly.

Honorable Mentions go to:

Most Entries Award: Merle 13 entries (derived from two days at the range)

Super Trooper Award: Joe Huffman for kicking ass and taking names all while fighting the elements to put my “Distance is Your Friend class to the test. You need to take a look at the entry on his blog. Joe is not a ‘Fair Weather Rifleman’ by any definition.

October Rifle e-Postal Match

The Black Death

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen. I present to you your targets for the month of October.

Project1a.jpg

Project1b.jpg

Yeah, you’re hating me already, right?

You can find them in the easier to print PDF form here (thanks to Mr. C for the conversion):
Target 1
Target 2

The targets are made to be printed out onto 8.5×11 inch paper and each square should measure close to, if not exactly, the number of inches listed in the center of each square.

The Task is simple: Put one round through each black square.

Here are the limitations:

You may shoot this at any distance, with any firearm you prefer, with or without optics. I will accept all entries, but as with September’s match, I will need at least three entries to designate a competing class (take two friends to the range with you, you shoot and they shoot and we magically have a new competing class).

There will be also be a distance award for whomever can ace this target at the longest distance.

Each box is worth 10 points for a total of 100 points. If you ace this target at one distance, please move it back and try it there. This is a test, after all.

Ties will be determined on the nearness of hits to the center of mass of each box.

I do not need you to send me pictures of your targets unless there is a tie.

Though I doubt it will help anyone, you may shoot this as many times as you like. I have found that repeated tries at targets of this fashion lead only to multiplied frustration. I am not responsible for any hair you rip out.

Your targets are due by midnight, November 7th, 2005.

Rules Update!

Due to my aversion to waiting for a shooting bench this last weekend before general hunting season, I have not shot this target yet. That will be remedied this upcoming weekend and I will post my targets here next Monday the 17th for all to see (and possibly deride and laugh at), so check in for that.

Yes, I have borrowed the design and the name of my target from what I believe was a small bore silhouette target. What with Halloween coming up and all this scare talk about the eminent avian flu epidemic going around, I found it quite appropriate.

If you have any further questions about the task or the target, please feel free to email me at the address listed in the sidebar.

Thank you and good luck folks!

RNS Quote of the Day: Introduction

Last week I paraphrased a statement made by Ayn Rand in a post about “Planet New Fundamental Rights that was recently rediscovered by socialist mayor Gavin Newsom of San Francisco when he declared that internet access was a ‘right’.

Well now y’all are screwed because the replacements to my Rand book collection lost many moons ago to the fire suppression system at a storage unit I was renting are starting to arrive. The first of which was 1967’s Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal (where I pulled last week’s paraphrase from). I immediately went into the appendix and found her essay “Man’s Rights.

Re-reading that essay after all these years was like getting kicked in the balls with a lightning bolt in its attention grabbing qualities and I have decided to feature paragraphs from that essay in a new daily series here at RNS. The paragraphs will not be in any particular order, most certainly not in the order they were printed in the essay, but will be tossed up for the reading pleasure of the folks who stop by RNS and for any criticism folks want to toss their way. I will move on to other essays of hers when we complete that one.

Rand is a somewhat of a controversial figure in the world of philosophy, mostly due to her unapologetic nature and the fact that she would stomp a mudhole into the ass of just about every collectivist philosophy instructor alive today, the vast majority of whom can only fault her philosophy by misrepresenting it during their presentation. I don’t fault them too heavily in their misrepresentations, it is easy to do that to something they’ll never understand.

I by no means believe or believe in every single thing she writes, but I do hold her in higher esteem than the great number of fools out there who are trying to tell me that I need to be a giver and not a taker. Nor am I posting these to try and influence or change anyone’s mind. It is your right to believe what you want.

I have a sneaking suspicion that most RNS regulars will be nodding their heads when they read the quotes, however.

It’ll also mean that even when I’m busy there will be content here other than just a post telling you all how busy I am.

So anyway, to start; I present the quote that I was wanting to pass on last week:

If some men are entitled by right to the products of the work of others, it means that those others are deprived of rights and condemned to slave labor.

Any alleged “right of one man, which necessitates the violation if the rights of another, is not and cannot be a right.

Ayn Rand “Man’s Rights

(BTW I am typing these in by hand as I have been unable to find this essay reprinted anywhere in the web. Any typos are mine, but I’m planning to have zero typos here)

Sunday Workday

I’m off to have lunch with the Analog Mom, Aunt and Wife. I’ll then be coming home to move furniture around.

Yay!

I’ve got the scores added up for the September e-Postal Match and found a couple surprise winners and more than one class due to the number of competitiors.

I’ve also got the targets made up for the October e-Postal Match, and as I alluded to on Monday, some folks are going to find me easy to curse at.

Get your eyes ready folks, the plague is coming tomorrow.

Mwahahahahaha.

Strange Bodily Malfunctions

So I get home on either Tuesday of last week and I notice that my left wrist is hurting. I figure it was something I did at work and let it be and try to sleep it off.

I wake up the next day and it still hurts, but not to the extent that I was going to worry about it, I’m right handed and I’ll just compensate and deal with it.

By the time I came home on Thursday, it is throbbing and none of the OTC pain relievers I have is making it stop. So I grab the Ace Wrap bandage and wrap it up, quite perfectly, if I do say so myself (I’ve been wrapping body parts for either First Aid practice, Sports Medicine or boxing for far too long to wrap sloppy).

Anyway, I go to bed with the thing on. 7 hours of sleep with the thing isolated should do the trick, right.

Wrong. I wake up and I can feel the thing hurting before I drag my ass out of bed and into the shower. I get into the shower after taking the wrap off and that was a total pain in the, well, wrist.

I get done with the shower and start getting my stuff ready for work, without the wrap on. I leave the house and drive to work and lo and behold, forget the damn wrap in the bathroom.

And here is the strange part, when I get to work, the pain is all gone and there is only a hint of tenderness in the outer tissue that anything had happened in the area.

WTF?

I took no pain relievers, I did no ice and the heat from the shower was minimal because I have an aversion to water warmer than lukewarm. And besides that, I had taken a shower every day before work, so why didn’t it happen on those days?

Again, WTF?

I don’t know how I hurt it in the first place, and now I don’t know how I healed it.

New Ideas in Late Evening Wear

One of the problems I would like to fix in the world of lingerie is what I like to call “The Tangle Factor. Put simply, ‘Tangle Factor’ is the articles propensity to get wrapped up on one thing or another.

When you’ve got to make a quick run, the last thing you want are your unmentionables to get snagged and cost you time.

I would, of course, have the marketing folks create the ads to reflect that the items would rip less often.

You would never see an advert like this, giving the real reason for the special fabric away.
