Lazy Weekend

Well folks, it is the last weekend before the start of general deer season here in Washington State, so there’ll be no rangetime for me this weekend.

The ‘hunters’ who decided to wait until the last minute to sight their rifles in will be filling the benches at the local ranges today and tomorrow. I was at the range for this weekend last year and there was a 30-45 minute waiting list for a bench.

No more for me, I’ve got furniture to move around the house that I’ve been putting off for far too long.

If you’ve got not a lot to do this weekend, you can read the latest in gunblogging goodness from Gullyborg and friends, The Carnival of Cordite.

In the meantime, I’ll be finishing up the score tabulation for the September Rifle e-Postal Match so that I can present them on Monday and also getting the targets made up the October Match which will also be presented on Monday.

See you tomorrow.

Dressiing for Adventure

Women have much more fun clothing than men do.

Sure, we have our items that drive women crazy; a well fitting pair of blue jeans or shirt, but we don’t really get any unmentionables that women demand we wear.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. I would hate to wear anything as impractical (and probably uncomfortable) as what we men buy to dress up our women.

But none the less, I’m giving thought to starting up my own clothing line for women. Seeing as how I am somewhat focused on the lower half of the female form, I would probably have to have to try and wrangle in one of my colleages, Fulbright Brest PhD, to help me with clothing for the ladies top half.

I’m thinking of calling it “Late-Evening Wear instead of just lingere.

My first idea would be the ‘Peek-a-Booty’

Outrageous Friday

Kind of like Freaky FrIday, but more silly!

Somewhat like Opposite Day but goofier!

Chock full of things that’ll possibly make you do a double take!

So let us take a walk down Carnie Row, shall we, and see the things that should not be!

How about the chastising of a student for not singing the anthem of a foreign country during a high school assembly with mandatory attendance!

ELGIN, IL — A Larkin High School parent says he wants to see more sensitivity and broad-based policies concerning cultural assemblies after a school assembly last month observing Mexico’s independence day.

Parent Robert Bedard said his son, a senior who already has signed up with the U.S. military, felt uncomfortable with the assembly, which the school required him to attend. Bedard said that when his son expressed his opposition to singing Mexico’s national anthem at the assembly, he was called a “punk” by a school employee.

The boy had better get used to singing that anthem, if MeCHa has anything to do about it!

——————–

Or how about a judge ruling that a zoning ordinance dealing with aesthetics is more important that a citizen’s right to make his thoughts known to the public!

LEWISTON, Idaho — A business owner can keep his anti-United Nations sign on the side of a building on the city’s Main Street but it must be made smaller, a 2nd District Court judge has ruled.

Judge Jeff M. Brudie agreed with the city of Lewiston on Monday that building owner Clifford W. Wasem’s sign failed to conform to city code. Regulating the size of signs doesn’t infringe on a person’s right to free speech or take away a property right, Brudie ruled.

Because paying to have 25% of a wall that you own painted to express your thoughts on a given subject is ‘blight’!

Tis a pity I didn’t know about this when I was driving through this town on my way to Boomershoot earlier this year. I’d have grabbed a picture. Let’s hope it stays up while the man appeals his case.

——————–

Speaking of things plastered on buildings, how about a three Vietnam tour 101st Airborne Veteran having his home continuously vandalized,

SHORELINE – Ken Potts calls himself a patriot. That’s what his front yard tells you too.

Metal American flags are staked in the ivy beside the driveway. A red, white, and blue pinwheel spins near the front sidewalk. One flagpole flies the American flag. A second flagpole carries the banner of the Army’s 101st Airborne.

Even his mailbox on North 185th Street in Shoreline sports the image of the Airborne’s screaming eagle.

But he says that in the last year the mailbox has been blown up twice with fireworks. The house has been egged. Paint has been thrown on the house too. The flags have been torn down and ripped up more than once.

And the 101st Airborne flag has had the word “murder” and a swastika written on it with a permanent marker.

It’s really difficult for me to see something like this and not feel sad,” Potts told us of the vandalism that started around election day last year. Especially, he says, since the 101st led the charge in World War II to defeat Nazi Germany.

But the biggest insult to this house with a permanent Bush-Cheney placard attached to the second story and a collection of mostly Republican election signs in the side yard, is the spray paint someone left on his vinyl siding this past weekend.

In two-foot tall letters on the side of his house facing Meridian someone painted “Bush Nazis.”

Real tolerant bunch we have here in Seattle, ain’t it?

Thankfully, Mr. Potts isn’t taking it too personally and can even have a sense of humor about it,

But to fight back he always puts new flags back on those front yard flagpoles.

He installed a security camera that keeps watch over his front yard. And for his own political jab he put an electronic readerboard in a front window. 24 hours a day it says: “Liberalism – is a mental disorder.”

You’re damned right it is, Mr. Potts.

No, there haven’t been any arrests or convictions in any of these cases. Seattle (and it’s immediate suburbs like Shoreline) are “File a Report for Insuranceâ€? only types of towns.

——————–

Not quite an outrage, but big enough freaks that they belong on Carnie Row, the UN’s International Criminal Court has issued their first round of arrest warrants,

And amazingly, they’re not against Americans!

The International Criminal Court has issued its first arrest warrants, for five members of Uganda’s notoriously cruel Lord’s Resistance Army, the top U.N. envoy for Congo said Thursday.

The International Criminal Court, the world’s first permanent war crimes tribunal, was founded in 2002 and had said for some time it was investigating the LRA, infamous for abducting more than 30,000 children, forcing them to become fighters, porters or concubines. The group has killed thousands of civilians and forced more than a million to flee their homes.

“I know they’ve issued arrest warrants for five people and these notifications went out last week,” William Lacy Swing, who is Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s special representative for Congo, told a news conference.

Aww, how ‘uniting’! Instead of sending in troops to stop the massacre, the UN acts like a janitorial crew to come in and survey the mess afterwards.

Now we’ll have to wait and see if they form a brand spanking new division to actually enforce the warrants or if they’ll be just like the resolutions against Iraq, left on a shelf to “get around to when we’re not busy screwing with the USâ€?.

——————–

And finally we have this,

Aeon.jpg

If you don’t know what that is, click here.

I don’t have a problem with its release, heck, I pre-ordered it. I am a little pissed that it took so damned long though.

I’m also unhappy as it looks as if I’ll be disappointed by the live action movie (link to trailer here, found at BlackFive)

Mostly because I dona lyke Theron!

Christina Ricci, with her new, more angular features, love of the original show and willingness to wear the true to form Aeon outfits would have been a much better choice.

But that’s just Hollyweird letting me down once again.

The Soundboard: Peanut Butter on the Brain

And now we return to our regularly scheduled posting of tunage for y’all.

As was the case the week before last, we will be featureing Alice in Chains and a non-charter of their 1995 self-titled album.

But before we get to the music, I would like to relay to you what I told a co-worker about AiC.

I basically laid out that I could not take the ‘Rock’ section of any music collection seriously if they did not own at least this album, their Jar of Flies EP and the album Dirt.

She was shocked, shocked I tell you, at my arrogance.

But then again, the name Steely Dan didn’t even ring a bell with her and she had to write the name down so that she could ask her fiancé about them. He is a ‘big music buff’ as she described him.

We’ll see.

Nice young lady and all, but I was shocked, shocked I tell you that she didn’t recognize the Steely One.

Anyway, the snark box has been changed with a pair of lines from the lyrics of today’s tunage.

Alice in Chains – God Am

Enjoy.

Oh, and if you don’t get the reference in the post title, you’ll need to buy the album to understand.

If you weren’t here yesterday, take a read though the snarky goodness while I sleep off three 12+ hour days in a row.

But at least I’m caught up again at work.

You gotta fight, for your right

To Wi-Fi?

Warning: Rant ahead. Possibly containing profanity and baseless accusations added for shock value.

Gavin Newsom, Mayor of San Francisco and first runner up in the 2001 Upperclass Twit of the Year Contest has declared access to the internet a “Fundamental Right, equal to none other than your rights to speak freely without fear of reprisal from your government, your right to practice of any religion (or not) you choose (or not) and your right to keep an bear arms.

He is in the process of attempting to set up free Wi-Fi service throughout the Shity by the Bay, and I have no doubt that as the subject starts getting bogged down in debate that he will begin blasting any and all who oppose it as friends ‘Big Phone’ and Big Cable’ who currently GASP charge people for their services after said companies have invested in the infrastructure to yield these services.

Newsom is also under some illusion that he can do this for little to no cost to the taxpayers of his goofy-assed city.

First off, I would like to point out to Mayor Dipshit that the government offers no truly ‘Free’ services. Even the federal government, who actually prints the little green pieces of paper we all use as currency can’t do anything for ‘Free’ and if they can’t do it, I cannot see Mayor Knewlittle as anything but delusional, possibly an aftereffect of withdrawals from his MethAmphetamine suppository bender last week.

I was listening to a nationally broadcast radio show yesterday when a caller phoned in and reminded me of something Ayn Rand wrote about rights. Specifically, in her book ‘Capitalism, the Unknown Ideal’ she mentions that a right can only be something that costs nothing to anyone. (I am, of course, paraphrasing, as all my Rand books were lost in a horribly moist situation involving a storage unit and automatic sprinklers. I did go on an Amazon shopping spree yesterday to correct that problem, however.)

But if you look at the Bill of Rights and the subsequent addition of later amendments to the Constitution, you will be hard pressed to find a single ‘Right’ contained within that costs anyone anything. They are free to all. The wealthy have no more availability to them than do the poorest of the poor.

When people like Mayor Monkeypoke start planting flags like Marvin the Martian into “Planet New Fundamental Rights such as Wi-Fi or the boondoggle that would be American Socialized Medicine, they are talking about ‘Rights’ that would not only need support from the tax base (read: the working class and the eevviill rich folks), but that would be more available to the poor than to the people who would be paying to support the so called ‘free’ program.

But of course, RNS regulars already know all this, which is why I like y’all.

I would just like to ask Mayor Fuckstick about his plan to give portable computers to the homeless.

Oh, he doesn’t have a plan for that yet? Then I would like to ask him why he is planning on denying them access to this fundamental right by not supplying the computers. After all, Wi-Fi to a person without a computer is as useful as oxygen to a rouge corpse.

And a rouge corpse is exactly what his city has become.

Information Post

OK, work sucked. Now I know why I don’t take time-off from there.

Can you say “Royally backed-up?

I knew you could.

So anyway, while I try to recover from 14 hours of bionic movements (and loads of keyboarding) let me just give you a few updates:

First up, and most important, Raging Dave has returned home from the land of the Pharaohs where the US Army switched his MOS to ‘Human Dust Magnet’. Why don’t you stop on by 4RWW’s and welcome him home.

Next, I got a good number of late entries for the Rifle e-Postal Match last night. Thanks to everyone who entered. Results on Monday as well as the new task.

The title for the new task will be: The Black Death

You’re going to love it (and then probably hate me shortly thereafterwards)!

In current events, I heard that Bush nominated one of his otherwise unknown staff yesterday for O’Connor’s place.

I also hear that there is bitching and moaning and whining and screaming about this that and the other from folks on the right.

Guess what people, the left wingers are laughing their asses off about that. Not enough to give the lady any support through the nominating process, but the righties look like spoiled children who wanted a pony and cried when we didn’t get one with the prettiest spots.

This is all I need to know for now, from the Geek w/a 45 Via Instapundit, who link to Kopel on Volokh:

The same liberties that ensure a free society make the innocent vulnerable to those who prevent rights and privileges and commit senseless and cruel acts. Those precious liberties include free speech, freedom to assemble, freedom of liberties, access to public places, the right to bear arms and freedom from constant surveillance. We are not willing to sacrifice these rights because of the acts of maniacs.

As the Geek says, “Ding ding ding! We have a winner.

Remember the confiscation of firearms in NOLA after the looting? Do you think that case will make it to the SCOTUS? Do you think that the confiscations were due to the acts of maniacal looters? See where I’m going?

There are some other things I’m wanting to rant about, but time is of scare supply. I love y’all, but a guy’s gotta sleep sometime. So for now I’ll leave you with a link from Mr. Completely’s post on the US Navy’s Rules for a Gun Fight,

Rule #11

When the Marines call for support, ignore Rules 1-10 and provide as much support, as closely as possible, with all forces at hand. Ships are cheap; Marines are not.

It’s true you know.

Last Call

For your September Rifle e-Postal Match targets is midnight tonight PST.

I’ve gotten a large number of targets from folks using their pistols for this one, which is great! If you have time today but don’t have a rifle range handy, just click over to the post linked above, print out the target and head on out to the pistol range and ‘git r dun’.

Minimum distance is 10yds but I have a guy who shot with his all the way out to 100 so targets anywhere in between will be just fine.

Results will be out by next Monday, as will the next e-Postal Match rifle task.

Pounding Clay

You may remember a couple weeks back when I mentioned that I happened upon a nearly full box of billiards cue stick chalk cubes and that I was wanting to try hitting them with a couple of my rifles to see what they do.

Well folks, I can proudly say that they kick ass.

Here is why:

Once I got to the Church of the Holy High Speed Projectile the other day, I made my intentions known to the rangemaster and he thought it was a wonderful experiment. I brought the entire box of chalk cubes and a roll of clear packing tape and proceeded to tape three cubes to the target board. The looks I got from the other shooters ranged from mild curiosity to utter disbelief.

The curious folks would tilt their heads, pause for a moment and then ask me what the hell I was doing. I would explain my intentions and my expectations and then it’d click with them. They turned into spectators when I got behind the scope.

The disbelievers were mostly hunters there to sight their rifles in for the upcoming deer and elk seasons. Most of these weekend warrior wannabes are happy if they can put two shots within three inches of each other at 100 yards and then whine when they miss the trophy buck, so I didn’t care what they thought at that exact moment. I was hoping that I might be able to wager a few bucks out of them, but I had no such luck.

First up, I need to correct myself on the measurement on the cubes from the post linked to above; the cubes are 7/8 of an inch, not ¾. I was close but no cigar. Still, they’re small enough to be a challenge.

PA030002.JPG

Anyway, I set up my target board at 100 yard line and got the Ruger 77 MKI in .22-250 ready to rumble and took out the three cubes with five shots.

And here’s the cool part!

When the 55gr Remington Corelokt bullet would hit the cubes, a four to five foot cloud of dust would puff out the back of the target and you knew you hit it. Even better, the folks back on the firing line knew you hit it. When I hit the first one I heard a couple of the guys let out audible ‘wows’. When I made the last two hits in a row, I could hear a couple folks chuckle.

Apparently, none of these guys have ever been to Boomershoot.

Which is exactly where I’m going with this.

While these cubes are no substitute, they are excellent practice for Boomershoot. Their less than 1 MOA size means that you’re getting the sizes approximated, their hit signature is relatively similar, without the ground shaking BOOM, of course, and just like the boomers, if you don’t hit them dead-on, you aren’t going to get your wanted reaction.

Not wanting to stop, I put five more cubes out at 100 yards and took them five for five with the Ruger to at least one set of hands clapping. I had planned to put them out at 200yds and give that a try, but they’re small size meant that I could barely see them at 100 yards with my Bushnell 3×9 cranked all the way up, even with the cubes turned around so that the black paper on their back side faced me on the tan background.

Note to self: When you get a new scope for the Ruger, get the finest set of crosshairs you can.

Next up, Barak the Boomershoot Rifle. Five cubes at 100 yards in five shots and I hadn’t even warmed up the barrel yet.

Then things took a turn for the stupid.

I rolled the Burris 8×32 up to 18x and dialed in my 200 yard zero and let the first shot fly.

Quarter inch high.

OK, that was just me, I thought. Try it again. Second shot; same spot.

Alright, I’m just nervous. I’ve got people watching me try to do this and I’ve psyched myself out. Clam down, try again. Third shot, same spot and the tape holding the cube on has just about had enough of me.

Silly me, as I back out of the scope to look out at the target again I look past my vertical turret and notice that I had missed my zero dial-in by a click too few. Cursing under my breath, I reach up, add the click, get back into the scope and let my fourth shot fly.

Puff!

Fire five, hit. Fire six, miss: quarter inch low, fire seven, eight and nine, all hits.

I kept this up until I could hit all five cubes in six shots. By then, I was happy.

I still had half the box left, so I took them on over to the 50 yard range and gave the 10/22 some trigger time. While the reaction is that same when you hit them with a 22LR round, they don’t disintegrate 100%, usually leaving at least half of the cube hanging there for you to fire a follow up shot and get a reaction.

So, now you know of a new type of target you can shoot at with entertaining results. I would especially recommend them for new shooters since they can see the dust cloud. Put some of these out at 25 yards and give them a 22 rifle and let them go at it.

And they’re pretty cheap in the ‘Bang for the Buck’ scale. A gross box with 144 cubes is $23 + shipping from these guys. That around $0.17 each. You might be able to find them locally to you at a pool hall or a place that sells billiards supplies.

One word of caution though if you are using the target boards supplied by your local range: Solids have even rougher hydraulics numbers than do liquids.

This is what my target board looked like with my first round of .22-250 shots.

P9290001.JPG

The back of this board was shot out with only the many layers of paper holding my targets on. The rangemaster saw this and told me to go get a new backer.

This did not alleviate the problem. A regular shot from the .22-250 puts a .22 caliber hole in the backer. A hit on one of the cubes by a .22 caliber bullet apparently sucks the cube through and puts a .50 or .60 caliber hole in the backer.

I’m sure you can see what would happen after multiple shots. You may want to toss a few bucks their way beforehand or donate some replacement wood if you think the range guys will get fussy about their backers.

New Phones

A while back I received an email via my employer telling us all about Nextel getting eaten up by SprintPCS (or maybe it was the other way around) and that we are now authorized to switch from Nextel to Sprint and get new pones and new plans under a deal they have worked out with those guys.

I immediately hopped on that deal because, well frankly, Nextel sucks a Michael Moore sized ass. I do not have enough fingers and toes to count how many times I have wandered out of the miniscule Nextel service area. Anytime I wanted to go to Montana, I knew I would be out of service once I got east of Spokane, since they have no service along the I-90 corridor from there until you hit Bismark, ND.

Bastards.

Whereas Sprint only has a few blank areas, mostly National Parks, where the envirowhackos have blocked the installation of multiple cellular towers, so if your company wasn’t the first in, you’re screwed.

But that is OK, I figure that if I got myself into the park, I’ll drag myself out if I have to. Screw calling 911.

So anyway, what I’m basically getting at is that I have a new phone, but for the folks who already have my number, it stayed the same. I would just like to ask everyone to email me and give me their numbers again so that I can get them put into this new phone. My Palmpilot quit a while back and I forgot to grab all your numbers out of the old Nextel phone before the service switched.

The reason for all this is that I am working on an idea for a Blogger Blastorama for October and would like to get ahold of y’all within the next week. You should be getting an email from me in the next couple days as well.

Thanks.

BTW, I got the Analog Wife a phone too. She has never had a cell phone before and was quite enthralled once I made her ringer the Halloween/Michael Myers theme. I hear her playing with it as we speak (I got her one as I am trying to phase out the land line phone except for the $10 per month local call only plan for emergencies).

Professor Booty is emailing my phone with pics for the screen saver. I’d better keep prying eyes at work away from the thing. Oh, and switch the ringer. Right now it is Jay-Z’s “99 Problems. Not exactly professional material.
