Good Deed for the Weekend

I’m doing something today that I don’t normally do: I’m not buying a new gun.

It’s not that I always buy a gun on the 4th of December, it is just that I could have, but didn’t.

You see, there is a sale of estate firearms going on today at the Central Whidbey Sportsman’s Association range today that a month ago I had full intentions of being at. In fact, seeing as how it was listed as ‘First Come, First Served’, I had planned on arriving over two hours early to make sure that I was the first person there and would therefore be able to pick up the particular firearm I wanted.

I have coveted the Remington 513T Matchmaster since my childhood when my father decided that I wasn’t allowed to shoot the one he had inherited from my grandfather. Even at that time, these rifles were quite sought after and nowadays are some of the most expensive 22lr bolties around, some of the military marked ones going for around $800.

The one at the sale was only at 60% so it was being sold for $250, which I was fine with. I didn’t care if I had to replace the barrel and spend another hundred or so more to refinish the stock, I wanted my very own 513T.

Well, then I got pneumonia and I can’t really travel for an hour and a half without stopping to violently hack and cough eight or nine times at five minutes a pop. That and I decided that I wanted one that I wouldn’t have to spend a couple months rebuilding before I could shoot it.

The other deciding factor was the Analog Wife. Not that she wouldn’t let me buy the rifle, it is, after all, my money. It was more to the point that she has been coveting something that pertains to her favorite hobby.

Her hobby is watching TV. Not the most productive task, I’ll give you that, but at least she isn’t frittering away her time at one of the many local casinos or downing a fifth of vodka a day, so I can’t see too much harm in it. Especially since my hobby is putting small holes in paper from long distances. She claims that her tube addiction comes from the fact that she grew up on a military base and never had cable. I don’t know if I believe her or not as I grew up surrounded by firearms, yet that is all I want to do.

She had been coveting one of the ‘New and Improved’ HDTV sets and she spent weeks before Thanksgiving learning all about the different types of HDTV’s and their features and read all the consumer reports about which ones worked the best and had the better reliability rates. She picked a couple that suited her and went through all the ads for a couple weeks and watching the prices drop as Christmas approached. Her problem was that she still needed close to $300 to be able to buy a model I was particularly impressed with her description of at a price that was getting near half of what the thing was going for before Halloween.

Well, I just so happened to have a shade over that amount and after taking the above mentioned factors of the rifle purchase into account, I donated it to her ‘New TV Fund’.

We went out yesterday and picked it up, and since my only involvement in its purchase was donating the truck needed to bring the damnably large contraption home, doing the heavy lifting required to bring it into the house, setting it on the entertainment center and hooking it up, I haven’t the slightest clue as to what it is. I know it has a 34 inch screen because she kept saying that on the way there while bouncing up and down and clapping her hands, though the stereo speakers on the side of thing probably add another six or seven inches to its width and that it wasn’t one of those “HDTV Ready jobbies as the converter is inside its rearward girth. Oh, and it is a JVC, just like the rest of our entertainment equipment. That was my one stipulation, since my money put her over the top.

It now dominates the living room, which is making her happy.

And this news that I may soon be able to dump close to half of my worthless cable channels if this legislation goes through is making me very happy because I may start watching TV again.

Of course, it is making the lefties pull their hair out and wish death upon those on the right. Because it is “A Right” to some idiots to make us pay for channels we will never watch.

BTW, I’ve decided that I’ll just wait until I pay the truck off in the next couple months and use my non-existent truck payment dollars to buy my 513T. Unless, of course, I get sidetracked by something else. Which is entirely possible, just not very probable.

Home for the Year

avatar14352_3.gif

I’m finally home for the first time in over two months. My intern, Ms. Bell, seems to have kept my classes up to speed on the teaching schedule and unless an emergency pops up, I don’t think I’ll have to leave the Occidental Tush Institute until the middle of January at the earliest.

So now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be relaxing for the rest of this weekend with the Walker Sisters, Johnita and Johnanti.

If you’re wondering about the strange names, don’t. They were named by their famous father, whom I’m sure you know of. His name is Jonathon, though Mr. Walker prefers to be called Johnny.

Dead Hole

Because, as we all know, there is no crime and no social ills left to for the government to fight in Canada, law enforcement in Alberta has declared the game of cribbage illegal.

Authorities in Alberta say monthly cribbage tournaments for seniors at three veterans clubs amount to illegal gambling because they offer a cash prize.

The warning from the province’s gaming and liquor commissioner comes as a result of a complaint from a person in Edmonton about cribbage tournaments at the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans Clubs. There are three of the clubs in Alberta, one in Edmonton, another in Lethbridge and the third in Grande Prairie.

As a result of an investigation, the commissioner ruled that even though the stakes are small, it still amounts to illegal gambling. The club in Edmonton contacted its other two branches and passed along the warning.

If this happened in America, the AARP folks would probably create a national campaign to fight it.

(PS – for those not versed in Cribbage slang, hit this link to find out what the term ‘Dead Hole’ means as well as a synonym that kind of matches my thoughts on Canada at the moment)

Illegal Labor Pool Drying Up

The front page of my local paper (the Tri-Valley Herald, which covers the valleys in the East San Francisco Bay Area) had this article this morning.

Seems that the recent stepped-up border enforcement efforts may be having an effect. (Jayson of Polipundit has been tracking these — see more here, here, and here) — ’cause stories about enforcement success are definitely under-reported in the MSM.)

Hey, if the labor pool shrinks, seems to me that surviving growers will have to pay higher wages. If so, shouldn’t Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta et al. have been pushing for effective border control all along, instead of organizing futile strikes?

Why howdy folks, Professor Booty here today. I’m just on my way to the airport, so you’ll excuse me if this is a quick post.

I stopped by the Texas Undergraduate School of the Hedone for a quick lecture series of three days and I must say that every time I come here, which isn’t often enough for my liking, I have a very good time. If you ever get invited to one of their many fancy dress dances, you might think of selling your children to make sure you can afford the airfare.

Let’s just say that while there is a lot of square-dancing going on, it’s good to be square. Because as soon as you’ll arrive, you’ll see things that’ll make you wish you were a cowboy.

They really do think they run the party

Because he won’t take their money anymore and he isn’t willing to run on their issues or talking points, MoveOn.Org is thinking of running their own Democrat against Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman.

“The war in Iraq has all the characteristics of Joe-momentum,” said Tom Matzzie, Washington director of MoveOn.org, a liberal, Democratic-leaning activist group, recalling a slogan the senator used unsuccessfully during his 2004 presidential campaign.

“Just like he didn’t realize his presidential ambitions were in trouble,” Matzzie said, “he doesn’t understand the war in Iraq isn’t going anywhere.”

No elected official would criticize Lieberman; he is still a respected figure within his party, someone who is a reliable vote on most issues of importance to Democrats. But Matzzie, whose organization claims more than 50,000 Connecticut members, said Wednesday that if his members ask, his group would back a Democratic challenger to Lieberman.

Matzzie was in New Haven last month, and found “the No. 1 question people asked me was, `What are we going to do about Joe Lieberman?'”

It is one thing if the Repub Party pulls its support from the campaigns of Arlen Specter or Lincoln Chafee, it is entirely another if say, the NRA told the party to piss off and that they would run their own guy against them.

It looks like the Dems have created a monster that they can’t control anymore. Not that I have a whole lot against Lieberman, but this will be fun to watch if MoveOn tries this.

If you ask the MSM, it is the pachyderm party that is fracturing. I guess they are just physically unable to report what they see.

Found by the Krazy Kos Kid’s Kharismatic Kommandant who goes on to ask his CT readers to start getting on top of this.

And he even has his candidate picked out!

Maybe he has already forgotten how badly his picks for 2004 faired?

RNS Quote of the Day

When “The Common Good of a society is regarded as something apart from and superior to the individual good of its members, it means that the good of some men takes precedence over those good of others, with these others consigned to the status of sacrificial animals. It is tacitly assumed, in such cases, that “The Common Good means “The Good of the Majority as against the minority of the individual.

Observe the significant fact that that assumption is tacit: even the most collectivized mentalities seem to sense the impossibility of justifying it morally. But “The Good of the Majority, too, is only a pretense and a delusion: since, in fact, the violation of an individual’s rights means the abrogation of all rights, it delivers the helpless majority into the power of a gang that proclaims itself to be “The Voice of Society and proceeds to rule by means of brute force, until deposed by another gang employing the same means.

The Prophecy Is True

From The Corner:

The Black Squirrel has risen in the East and claimed the flesh of Dog. The war shall be joined. It is time for Man to return in kind the loyalty we have shown him. What side the Cat chooses in this battle is unknown.

Scary Squirrel.jpg

I’m a Dog partisan, myself, so this bizarre event makes me even more determined to do my part in the struggle at the Surprise Valley Squirrel Wars, er, Squirrel Roundup, this coming March 18th. (Just got my entry packet in the mail today, the day after I called to request one from the Surprise Valley Chamber of Commerce. Now, that’s service!)

RNS Quote of the Day: Over Educated, Yet Unlearned

Local blogging author and leftist, David Neiwert, has written yet another screed on one of his favorite right-bashing topics, ‘Hate Crimes’. In it he completely ignores any hating he himself may do in the form of lumping any and all who reside on the other side of the aisle from him as homosexual hating proponents of white-pride whose favorite hobby is destroying the planet’s eco-structure and goal it is to bring fascism to America..

I knew that I should have stopped reading it when I got past the introductory sentence:

Have you ever noticed how, when libertarians and right-wingers talk about “threats to our freedoms,” the only source of those threats is the government?

But I couldn’t just leave it there. I had to see if Dave could dig himself an even deeper hole of ignorance in the following paragraph.

Let’s just say I wasn’t disappointed:

It’s perhaps useful to remember that, over the course of American history, the greatest threats to the liberty of American citizens have come not from the government, but from our fellow citizens. Particularly, those directed by white citizens against nonwhites.

If Neiwert actually knew his history as well as he thinks he does, he would know that that statement is an utter and complete lie, used to fire up the victimhood reflex of his sycophantic readership.

He seems to have forgotten how it was the error of government that allowed slavery in the first place, producing multiple times more deaths than his self titled ‘Lynching Period’ ever did. It was also the error of government that led to horrific scenes such as the infamous Cherokee ‘Trail of Tears’.

These two sad periods in our nation’s history were not the fault of individuals, but of government. Yes, a government’s actions are a product of the decisions of individuals, but they are carried out in an official capacity.

The latter half of his post, Neiwert quotes an article from the Southern Poverty Law Center on some recent guesswork by the DoJ about how some believe that ‘Hate Crimes’ may be underreported by a magnitude of fifteen. The report says that this may be in part due to the influx of illegal aliens unwilling to report the incidents and/or by the incompetence of the constabulary being unable to report said incidents properly.

All of this squealing had me remembering one of the past Quotes of the Day, which I searched for and found.
