I’d believe they’re planning for the future

But I rate most news from Russia right next to The Midnight Star in terms of accuracy and reliability.

Russia to Supply Ammunition to Afghanistan at U.S. Request

U.S. defense officials have secretly requested a “prodigious quantity” of ammunition from Russia to supply the Afghan army in case a Democrat president takes over in Washington and pulls out American troops. Pentagon chiefs have asked arms suppliers for a quote on a vast amount of ordnance, including more than 78 million rounds of AK47 (the well-known Kalashnikov submachine gun) ammunition, 100,000 rocket-propelled grenades and 12,000 tank shells — equivalent to about 15 times the British Army’s annual requirements, The Daily Telegraph reported Monday.

Although it would be one of the better explainations for the price hike in 7.62×39 ammo.

Motivational Transportation

Here’s what I’ve been dealing with this last week: I need a new car.

I’ve been driving my old car for close to seven years, it has 110,000 miles now and it is not only starting to look the part, but things are going wrong with it. Almost a $1000 in brake repairs on Monday alone, and that doesn’t count the rest of the parts I’ve put into it in the last six months, so I began my search for the new Bootie-ride this week.

While I do make a decent wad of cash working at the Occidental Tush Institute, I don’t buy new cars, as that is a waste of money. I also do not buy luxury brand cars. Dr. Lucious Thai says that this is because I’m cheap, but I see no reason to spend an extra $10 grand buying a Lexus when I can get the same thing with a Toyota badge on it (a neat trick The Kid showed me a few years back). I’ll let Thai buy himself a brand new car every other year while I keep my bank account ready for those quick research trips to Rio.

Unfortunately for me, this time around I wasn’t sure what I wanted. It is still a couple years too early to pick up one of those new Chrysler products used at a decent price and nothing else suits my fancy, so I asked around OTI for some suggestions in a five or six passenger vehicle (I haul a lot of ass around town, you see) and I got quite a few good ones.

One of the Regents I spoke to, Doctor Goodwin Brest, even gave the contact information to a couple of dealerships that he has dealt with in the past and been very happy with, so leaving my classroom instruction time to my TA for a day, off I went shopping, cash at the ready, to make the best deal.

I quickly figured out why Dr. Brest liked these dealerships, and you will too.

Please meet my sales associate, Alicia

Unfortunately for Alicia, her selection of autos left something to be desired.

Unlike some of her other attributes.

Diners don’t chicken out at PETA’s clucking

A human inside an injured chicken costume, hobbling in protest on the sidewalk Wednesday in front of a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant, didn’t achieve the desired effect, according to many who dined there.

Brad Steig called Wednesday’s protest in Grand Junction by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals good advertising for KFC.

The protest consisted of four adults and one child holding signs in front of the restaurant, handing out fliers and DVDs and urging people to not eat at KFC until the restaurant buys chickens from humane vendors.

Steig, a manager for Halliburton, said he heard about the PETA protest on the radio and decided right then to eat at KFC on Wednesday, the day of the protest.

Not only that, but he bought seven of the biggest buckets of chicken and all the side dishes and used four trips to load them into his Halliburton pickup to treat his co-workers.

“I detest that organization,” Steig said, adding that PETA tries to harm the economy because of personal agendas.

Buys a Halliburton truckload of chicken from a KFC during a PETA protest! You gotta love that!

It’s Friday, payday, and if I didn’t already have a nice juicy steak ready for grilling and potatoes for baking, I’d be having my pre-work meal tonight at KFC.

But hey, there’s always the weekend!

I’d like to thank those who helped me out with the Tunafish Sammich question yesterday. And I must say, to you sweet pickle eatin’ mofos…you are some sick bastages. How can you eat those things? The Analog Mom worked across the street from a large pickle factory when I was a kid. I can’t even smell sweet pickles without nearly losing my appetite.

Speaking of food questions, David put up one of his own for you here late yesterday.

A Lack of Credibility

By now I’m sure you’ve read about Iraq Veterans Against War poser MacBeth faking that he was a US Army Ranger/SpecFor/BoogieMan whatever.

If not, I’m sure that rock you’ve been under probably stinks something fierce and you need to get out amongst the living and read this rundown from Mrs. Malkin. And this one too, while you’re clicking.

On the other side of the fence, the Klueless Kos Kids are trying to decide if they’ve even ever heard of MacBeth or if he was a right-wing plant into IVAW to discredit the organization.

If they would just follow the second Malkin link I’ve provided above, they’d remember where they heard the guy.

Also from the Kos Klan, is this post by Kos frontpager, DarkSyde, about the Lay/Skilling verdicts yesterday. His hyperbole and linkage aside, he takes a serious blow to any amount of credibility he may have had with this

Among the thousands of employees and investors ruined by Enron’s fraud were several personal friends of mine. Some of them have said they were encouraged to invest every dime they could spare into Enron common stock even as insiders allegedly unloaded large blocks. These were geologists, engineers, and line workers, easy prey for slick offers of easy money and utterly ill-equipped to rationally judge the wisdom of that advice.

Excuse me, but exactly how long do you have to go to school to be professionally employed as a geologist? 4 years? 6 years? Engineers don’t get degrees by being ignorant and stupid line guys don’t live very long.

None of those people are ‘easy prey’. They can do their own research and make their own decisions.

I’m a lowly dispatcher, a job that requires only map skills and an ability to effectively communicate, and I know not to trust my employer’s rosy reviews of their stock price and it’s potential. My co-workers are truck drivers and the vast majority of them have no college education whatsoever. Twice a year the company makes a push for us to add their stock to our 401K plans, and I have more fingers than co-workers who have bought their sales pitch.

There was no forcing of employees to buy only Enron stock, and while I’m sure that there’ll be a few folks who think I’m ‘blaming the victims’, I’m not seeing any ‘victims’, only people who made bad choices.

Darksyde’s playing of highly educated professionals as too stupid to do their own investing is just more of what we saw during the discussion of Private Social Security Accounts. The left wants to convince as many people as they can that government is the safest place for your money because you couldn’t do it all by your little old self.

Personally, I think they’re projecting.

Because you know it wasn’t enough

Seeing as how they know that they can’t ambush him with the question during the 2008 debates, I’m giving the mainstream press a week before they ask Bush if he has any more regrets.

On a side note, I’m thinking that this new ‘Bush-off-the-cuff’ might be Snow’s doing.

We’ll see if it works. After screwing up the immigration discussion with his down-the-middle crap, anything can help.

I’ll have more on why I’ll still be voting (R) on Wednesday.

On Tuesday though, I’ll have a question regarding the free market and a possible hole I’ve found in the theory. It’ll ramble a bit, but still be educational.

Bacon, Bananas and Toast

Well, if AK can post about tuna fish sandwiches, I figure I can toss my family’s secret recipe out into the blogosphere. This is excellent rocket fuel for a busy Saturday working in the yard.

Bacon, Bananas and Toast:

3 slices bread

1 banana, ripe yellow

5 slices bacon

Toast bread and cook bacon to desired doneness; butter toast to taste.

Slice banana evenly atop toast. Break bacon slices into halves; place three halves on each piece of toast atop the bananas. (Eat the remaining half slice as an appetizer.) Food of the Gods! Yum! Enjoy.

Anybody else ever heard of this delectable concoction? So far as I know, this was invented by my Dad. And we’ve never run into anyone else who’s ever heard of it, much less enjoyed it on a regular basis as we did.

Of course, if you don’t like bacon, a more prosaic but still yummy version is Bananas and Toast. Just take the above and delete the bacon.

Don’t give me that Elvis-is-insane-for-eating-peanut-butter-and-banana-sandwiches look. These are really tasty!

I think I missed a day there

But what with all the kick ass stuff David posted yesterday, I doubt you missed me.

I had, quite literally, nothing on which to post about, then I got home and saw what David did and decided not to wreck it, grabbed one of my expanding collection of Potter books and had a quiet morning.

But I did come up with a question overnight that I’d like to ask you all:

Tuna Fish Sandwiches

I like mine with just mayo and pickles, but I understand that some folks must have theirs with mustard and/or pepper.

So my first question is how do you prefer yours?

My second question is, does the adding of the mayo negate the healthy aspects of the tuna itself?

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

The Soundboard: Driving Music Pt. 1

The ‘Summer Driving Season’ is nearly upon us. In regions that aren’t always warm and dry, this means that you can take your best vehicle out and drive until the wheels come off without worry of getting a spot of rain on it.

Even here in the NW, summer means that you may get a decent amount of warning before the torrential downpour happens to at least get your convertable top back up.

People drive in different ways during summer, the same way they drive differently on Sunday’s. The weather is nice and you can leave earlier and get home later without all that rushing around like during wintertime.

So I’ll be covering a few different styles with this series. These are just examples of what I’d listen to when driving in this style. I’m sure that each one of y’all has your own preference, but then again, you don’t have am FTP connection to tell me what you’d listen to, and I do.

Feel free to leave your selections in the comments. I may just include them in a future Soundboard.

Anyway, today we’re going to cover the ‘All Out’ style.

This usually (hopefully) takes place on a nice stretch of multiple lane interstate late Sunday night or early Monday morning (midnight to 4am). You have done your homework to see what the shift coverage of the Highway Patrol is going to be and your vehicle is tuned to perfection.

This has all taken place because tonight you are going all out. You are going to see what happens first: Your car tops out at speed or you run out of balls.

You need something completely unlike a slowjam and you want it loud.

I know that I want a minimum of 180 beats per minute and this track is from an album full of tunes that go from 160 to 240bpm. It’s over two hours long and I can and have listened to it for a few days straight. You can find it here (I hope you can do the dollar to euro conversion).

Enjoy

Have a List and Hold It Close

Dr. Robert C. Balling Jr. wrote up a list of truths at TCS that were too inconvenient for AlGore to include in his enviro-scare tactic movie, “An Inconvenient Truth”

Here are a couple:

(2) Gore discusses glacial and snowpack retreats atop Kenya’s Mt. Kilimanjaro, implying that human induced global warming is to blame. But Gore fails to mention that the snows of Kilimanjaro have been retreating for more than 100 years, largely due to declining atmospheric moisture, not global warming. Gore does not acknowledge the two major articles on the subject published in 2004 in the International Journal of Climatology and the Journal of Geophysical Research showing that modern glacier retreat on Kilimanjaro was initiated by a reduction in precipitation at the end of the nineteenth century and not by local or global warming.

(5) Gore claims that sea level rise could drown the Pacific islands, Florida, major cities the world over, and the 9/11 Memorial in New York City. No mention is made of the fact that sea level has been rising at a rate of 1.8 mm per year for the past 8,000 years; the IPCC notes that “No significant acceleration in the rate of sea level rise during the 20th century has been detected.”

Keep this list nearby. As the movie’s premier nears, the enviro-cultists will start wailing like they probably never have before. Not that they’ll listen, but I’m sure that the non-true believing, fence-sitters will.

And while we’re on the subject of lists, on Monday Rodger re-posted something from last November that he called “What Democrats Said, And When They Said It”.

I reads like, well, a list of remarks made by leading Democrats from 1998 to up to 11/05 that shows them to be complete hypocrites today.

Read it, learn it, know it.

Use it.

Take a Moment

Click on this link (it’ll open in a seperate window) and think about what you see.

If you’re like me, you see a relatively attractive banner heading a report about Dean, Hillary, The Swimmer and Cali Pelosi wanting to take power after the mid-term elections.

But if you’re like Oliver Willis (Occupation: Toole), you see the NRCC portraying them as The Four Horsemen of the Apocolypse.

And if you’re a CodePick member/supporter you not only see what “Like Superglue to Stupid” sees, but you whine about them not being called “Horsepersons”
