Gettin’ Schooled

The City of Bellingham plays host to Western Washington University, a moderately sized member state run uni-system. This university, like so many others, hosts a pseudo school where single class subjects are taught, called The Academy for Life Long Learning (aka: Extended Education and Summer Programs, or EESP).

Bellingham is also the largest metro area along the US-Canadian border and has seen patrols by the Washington Minutemen Detachment.

Co-founder of said detachment, Tom Williams, was actually able to get WWU’s EESP Program to let him teach a course titled “Citizens on the Border”. A surprising feat, seeing as how WWU is no stranger to the left-wing mindset that prevails throughout the vast majority of universtities in this country.

Here is the course description:

This course is a history of Americans protesting what they believe is the failure of the government to fulfill its Constitutional responsibilities. What is the purpose of the Minutemen? Who are they? Where do they come from? Why are they needed? Are their methods controversial? Are they a threat to anyone?”

Sounds innocuous enough. Some leftard board probably thought that it would be presented by a pro-illegal immigration clone and would build sentiment against the Minutemen and let it onto the course listing pamphlet.

Unfortunately for the course and those who signed up, someone Googled Williams’ name and spread the word that their shiny-happy little world had been invaded by a “Nativist Bigot” and cried bloody murder until it was taken off the list.

I found out about this class from a few friends and fellow WWU alumni, but within a few days, emails from professors, alumni, and concerned citizens were flying all over the state. The Life Long Learning Academy, a service of Western’s Extended Education and Summer Programs (EESP) office – “A curious mind never retires!” – began receiving calls left and right that the Minutemen were holding what most people, myself included, considered to be a recruiting drive sponsored by the Academy. By early this week, the class had been canceled and the catalog amended.

Barbara Audley, executive director of the EESP, would not comment on why the class was cancelled, saying only that it was an “academic decision.” But a number of people who spoke with her told me that it seems no one at the EESP actually questioned Mr. Williams’ fitness to teach a balanced academic course on an extremist organization he himself was part of, or even asked what the course content would be. After a week of phone calls, Ms. Audley apparently contacted Mr. Williams for more information on the proposed course and found his explanation unsatisfactory.

How odd that they thought Mr. Williams might not be able to present a “balanced” academic course, when the majority of the economics courses presented at our state universities are based on the Keynesian idea of an economy where the government tells people what would be best for them to buy.

Here are Tom Williams’ qualifications, listed after the original course description:

He holds a BA from the United States Naval Academy and a PhD from the University of Denver. He practiced in trauma psychology, a field in which he lectured and published. He was an adjunct professor at the University of Denver and an instructor at the Naval Academy. Tom served as a consultant to the Attorney General of the United States.”

I do believe that he probably outqualifies the vast majority of the WWU Faculty, if not the Administration staff members. Could this be a little bit of projectionism on their part, hmmm?

The Soundboard: Superbowl Edition

Today is the day. I’ve folks coming over so I’m off the interweb for a bit.

For those of you who have been kind enough to stop by before/after the big game, I’ve got something special. I was going to post the top one on Thursday, but it took me until last night to bring the music server back online after the RNS Blogstation Meltdown of 07.

From NFL Films ‘The Power and the Glory’

The Raiders – Sam Spence

Winds of Victory – John Facenda

It’s a damn fine disc, and I’m not even that much of a football fan. Even if you’re only halfway a fan of the game, you’ll recognize these.

Oh, and btw, GO COLTS!

Maybe after today

The left will stop kissing the ass of the Chicago Bears.

After spending the week calling Indianapolis Coach Tony Dungy a homophobe, The Huff-a-ton Post let Bears Linebacker, Brendan Ayanbadejo, onboard to whine about the lack off affirmative action at his alma mater, UCLA.

It has been almost ten years since I was here in Miami, playing for the UCLA Bruins, as we were trying to remain undefeated and #1 in the country. In two days, I will be playing in my first Super Bowl for the Chicago Bears, in a history-making game with two African-American head coaches.

Back in 1998, while preparing for the game against the University of Miami, I was thinking a lot about what was happening on my Westwood campus with the passing of Proposition 209, which ended affirmative action in the state of California. Now as a Chicago Bear, heading into the biggest game of my life, I am still concerned about what is happening on my Westwood campus, because this year there were only 96 African-American students enrolled in the Freshman class of 5000 — 2%. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am completely focused on this game and plan on bringing the Lombardi trophy back to the city of Chicago, but when the game is over, this issue is not going to go away.

Great Googlie-Mooglie, somebody call the Whaaambulance!

Just a Warning

My employer decided to issue a facility-wide warning on Thursday and Friday, concerning the game today and work tomorrow.

Regardless if you’re a football fan or not, you can help your team win on Monday by ensuring you come to work well rested and alert. Don’t le an unwise action such as celebrating too much ruin your team’s efforts towards being safe and responsible.

There were five paragraphs on the sheet that was attached to our paycheck envelopes, four of them can be whittled down to one single sentence that is much easier to understand and would have wasted less paper

“Don’t come to work hungover on Monday or you’re fired!”

Sometimes I really dislike working for an international corporation.

Sunday Book Review: Point of Impact

Actually, this is really a review of Stephen Hunter’s entire series of sniper novels starring Bob the Nailer.

In a nutshell: go read them, they’re awesome.

The first of these, Point of Impact, remains simply the best American novel about a shooter. That’s not just because it’s so accurate, in a way that only gun geeks can appreciate. It’s also the best-written. Hunter didn’t win a Pulitzer for movie criticism for nothing — the man can write!

But the book also shows his love of firearms and the men who use them for their proper purpose. It captures the gun culture well, with lots of little touches that let you know Hunter not merely researched his material, he’s done it. And like all of Hunter’s novels, even the most anal gun nut will be hard-pressed to find an error. I especially appreciate that, considering that Robert Parker’s persistent writing about a “.12 gauge” shotgun sets my teeth on edge every time I read it. None of that sort of thing in Hunter’s stuff.

It’s also a rip-roaring action read. The only false notes are the mildly cartoony villains (including a man named Schreck. I’ve never confirmed it, but given Hunter’s movie-critic background, I’d be willing to bet he named his character well aware of the infamous “Max Schreck” of Nosferatu — or at least that Schreck is German for terror.)
For more — a lot more, including the upcoming movie (woohoo!) — go read Jerry the Geek’s masterful writeup.

The second book about Bob, Black Light, is almost as good overall, with a stunning sequence with a Mini-14 on an Arkansas mountain road that will have you on the edge of your chair.

The third book, Time to Hunt, is a fantastic sniper-vs.-sniper tale, equal to if not better in many ways than the superb Stalingrad sniper novel War of the Rats.

Hunter followed these books with others about Bob’s father, Earl. Also well worth it is what I think is Hunter’s best novel of all, Dirty White Boys, which also is chock-full of completely accurate gun details. It also ties in with Black Light.
Anyway, if you like guns and good tales well told, you owe it to yourself to read Point of Impact before the movie comes out, and the rest of Hunter’s stuff as well.

RNS Quote of the Day: 02/03/07

The ‘private sector’ of the economy is, in fact, the voluntary sector; and the ‘public sector’ is, in fact, the coercive sector

A One Word Response

Stephen Schlesinger ponders out loud at HuffPo

Meantime, How is Ban Ki-Moon Doing?

My impression of Ban Ki Moon so far is that he plays his cards very close to his chest. He moves cautiously, as befits a new UN Secretary-General and seems to be very conscious of not making a wrong move. I have met him once and thought he had an intelligent, sensitive face.

He seemed to be a friendly chap. But, while so far there is little in his pronouncements that I can disagree with — he makes the right progressive gestures — on Darfur, on the death penalty (though it took him 24 hours to do so), on reforming the UN management, on upgrading the Human Rights Council– he does not possess the passion or soul which Kofi Annan had.

Good.

In the meantime, I wonder how is the HuffPo doing? Everytime I go there it seems that my pop-up blocker has to block more ads. Are they running short of cash like their favorite radio network, or are they just trying to pester away those who don’t really care what they have to say?

Scared the crap outta me

All pupils to be given lessons in climate change

Children will be put on the front line of the battle to save the planet under radical proposals to shake up the way that geography is taught in schools.

The plans, to be published on Monday, will ensure that, for the first time, issues such as climate change and global warming are at the heart of the school timetable. Pupils will also be taught to understand their responsibilities as consumers – and weigh up whether they should avoid travel by air to reduce CO2 emissions and shun food produce imported from the other side of the world because of its impact on pollution.

I read through this at the leftist jabber-site, AmericaBlog, thinking this was going on here.

It took me not recognizing any of the names of the officals to check the link and see that this story was published in the UK Independant.

So the Brit government is going to brainwash their kids with this crap. Meanwhile, the Islamic world wants them dead or subservient.

Good choice, England. Nice way to keep your priorities straight.

Who, What, Where, When, Why, How: Part 6

NOTE: I’ve gotten just one email this week from the Professor, but it contains the key to what had been going on with him these past couple weeks. It also has more than just one photo. He’s on the run now, but from who, I don’t know. However, I’m pretty sure they want him dead.

Since tomorrow is the big game and you’ll be worried about something else, I’ll post his stuff up today instead of tomorrow. Wish John Thomas luck. He might be needing it. Here’s where we left him last Saturday—————————————-——————–As the dance that my two hostesses were involved in was really started to get interesting, or at least as interesting as a fellow with horrible vision and pain just about everywhere would consider, a jarring explosion came from my left. A man entered the room at a speed I couldn’t comprehend due to my vision problem and clothesline-tackled my hostesses with such a force that I felt sorry for them.

——————–As the dance that my two hostesses were involved in was really started to get interesting, or at least as interesting as a fellow with horrible vision and pain just about everywhere would consider, a jarring explosion came from my left. A man entered the room at a speed I couldn’t comprehend due to my vision problem and clothesline-tackled my hostesses with such a force that I felt sorry for them.He stood back up, kicked one of them in the head and put his knee into the face of the other as she tried to get up. He turned and looked at me and said “Oh my God.”, which, to be honest, scared me more than anything so far on this very strange day.

“Are you Professor John Thomas Booty?”, he asked. I slowly noddied in affirmation and he began to approach me. “Give me your right arm.” Being in the state I was in, I had to think about which arm I was going to give him for a moment, but by the time he reached me I had figured it out.

He took something out of his back pocket, snapped it open and pulled out a very strange looking hypodermic needle. Grabbing my wrist, he jabbed it swiftly and unceremoniously into my bicep. I felt no pain, however, which was nice for a change.

As the fluid from the needle entered my bloodstream, I began to think very happy thoughts. But all that ended when the man began to speak.

“Professor Booty, my name is Mack Sauer and I’ve been sent to get you out of here. I have just given you the antidote to the drug these broads shot you up with. It’ll be taking effect any minute now. Can you walk?” I pointed to the electrodes from the Tazer sticking out of my back, and again, he swiftly and unceremoniously ripped them out.

He was quite right about that antidote. I could see the room I was in again, with its strange hanging furniture. Then I saw my hostesses lying beaten on the floor. I don’t know where this guy learned to be that violent, but they taught him well.

“Professor, we have to get out of here, right now. Can you see yet?” I nodded affirmatively and stood up. He drew a pistol from behind his back and we went out through what I thought was the doorway I came in through.

As we entered a hallway, we were met by a woman I had never seen before. He aimed his gun at her and she put her hands up. Mack told her to turn around and step into the doorway across from her. I’d never been in this room, which was a good thing as the walls were covered with mirrors. With whatever they shot me up with that screwed up my vision, this room would have been a nightmare.

And that is where we left her. Mack kicked the doorknob once and bent it up against the doorframe.

The next doorway was closed, but looked like our only exit, so Mack kicked it in. Inside were two more women sitting in front of a computer. They turned to us and smiled.

spankable181.jpg

Mack asked “Are you the monitors?” and they nodded, still smiling. He ordered them to back away from the desk and shot the computer twice. “Can’t leave them with evidence.” was all he said before he ordered them into a closet. That doorknob got the same treatment as the other one.

There was another door in this room, but there was no handle on our side and it was framed to open only from the other side. “That’ll be where the Mistress is hiding” he said. If I could have talked, I’d have told him my motto about how I never met a Mistress I didn’t like. But as if reading my mind, he followed with “No, you wouldn’t like this Mistress.”

He unloaded his pistol at the door and shouted “I’ll kill every woman in this house if you don’t open this door.” This seemed like such an odd threat that I was wholly surprised when it actually opened.

In the doorway stood yet another woman I had never seen before. You could tell that she was in charge though, by her demeanor. “Hello Mr. Sauer” she said. “Shut up, Candice, and tell me how to get out of this damned funhouse you have here” he replied.

“You’re not going to get very far, Mack. You should just leave him for us to play with.”

“I said, shut the fuck up, Candice, or I’ll give you exactly what Gloria got.”

“That was you? You shit-eating pig? It’s too late Mack. You blew up the only way in or out of this house. Now you’re screwed. I’ve sealed this place tight until my boys arrive. They’re going to love hurting you.”

“Only if they can catch me. C’mon Professor, we’ve got to find a way out of here.”

We left “Candice” standing by her desk chair.

Notice

Seeing as how our hosting service was down for the last half of yesterday because of some short-horn in Atlanta cut the fiber optic line to/from one of the major hubs, we’re going to just put up a couple things today.

If you’re a resident of Washington and you didn’t or couldn’t stop by yesterday, make sure you read the post on the Legislative meeting next Thursday, just a couple posts below this one.

We’ll be back full bore tomorrow. See y’all then.
