RNS Quote of the Day: 02/02/07

Og the Neanderpundit has taken quite enough of this, thank you

I have had my share of people telling me that “if we adopt the tactics of the enemy we become worse than them”. Bullshit. You do what you have to do to win. Then you remember that you did hard things to overcome, and you teach your children the meaning of what you did, and why. This goes for politics and war.

Fire, Fire, Matches, Burning Burning!

That’s an inside family joke (no, I’m not a firebug; it was a favorite saying of a dear departed relative). It’s also an appropriate title for this in-depth post at Classical Values. And it’s not only Scientific, it has an Historical Artifact from the Nixon era — so it’s good for you in all sorts of educational ways. Go read!

Excellent News

Times Two!

Before I write about the items I alluded to yesterday, I would like to let everyone know that the hearing for SB 5197, the anti-Gun Show bill, has finally been set.

One week from today, on February 8th, at 1530 in Senate Hearing Room 4 in the John A. Cherberg Senate Office Building, the Washington State Senate Labor, Commerce, Research & Development Committee will hold their hearing on SB 5197.

The Heartless Libertarian has the Gun Owners Action League alert cut and pasted at his place. You should read through that.

I will be there. I may have to cut blogging short on that day so that I can get up four hours early for work to make it, but to say that this is important would be an understatement. I will be taking A/V equipment along and whatever they allow will be used and the results posted here on the following Friday.

If you are in Western Washington and would like to attend, let me know and we’ll see if we can connect for a shared ride or a convoy of sorts. I’m in Tacoma, about 45 minutes to Oly with decent traffic.

On a side note, it looks as though someone at the Washington State Brady affiliate, Ceasefire Washington, has someone inside the LCR&D Committee as they had the date, time and place announced before it even went up on the State’s website.

If that doesn’t scare you, check your pulse.

——————–

In other good firearms news in Washington, some folks in the Washington Legislature have finally taken notice of the happenings during Katrina and have set up a pair of bills that would make sure no state authority can prohibit the possession of firearms during a disaster.

House Bill 1633 – Protecting the constitutionally guaranteed right to the lawful possession of firearms during an emergency.

Senate Bill 5516 – Concerning the seizure or confiscation of firearms during a state of emergency or natural disaster.

Earlier this year the Washington State Supreme Court actually did something right and declared the Right to Keep and Bear Arms an individual right, per the State Constitution, so these bill would just be icing on the cake.

Nonetheless, I want them in the books.

——————–

As a side note, not that this will be a surprise to anyone, if you look at each of the bills introduced that deal with firearms, the pro-civil rights bills were all sponsored by R’s and the anti-civil rights bill sponsored by D’s.

The Soundboard: The Sounds of Silence

Der Soundboarden ist kaput for the time being. With the RNS Blogstation Meltdown of 07, I have lost the address, login and password for the FTP server used to run the posts for the time being (I’ll be fiddling with it some more this weekend).

So today we’re going to do something a bit different.

I’ve spoken in the past about the local radio station, based out of Seattle’s Nathan Hale High School, KNHC – 89.5 on your Seattle are FM dial. If you are not in the Seattle area, you can listen to them 24-7-365 via this here internet thingy by going to their website and clicking on your appropriate music format.

As you can see on their website, they have a number of different specialty electronica music shows in their programming. Today, since I can’t do straight audio, I will be doing video.

I heard this particular program live while I was doing some home computerin’. KNHC’s “The Vortex” is one of my favorite shows to listen to.

The guys name is KJ Sawka. He’s got a drum kit and a sampler and he goes to town live in this vid.

Ignore the guy’s shirt. You can’t get away from crap like that in Seattle. The music is the focus here today.

RNS Quote of the Day: 02/01/07

Today’s quote comes from this very excellent post at the Gates of Vienna Blog

The gates of Auschwitz were not opened with peace talks. Holland was not liberated by peacekeepers and fascism was not defeated with a deft pen.

Rick Mercer

Needless to say, you really should read the whole thing.

The Horsepower Hop

As you all probably all know by now, I don’t watch too much TV. Very few things on the tube possess the power to hold my interest for more than a few minutes. The wife, on the other hand, is a TV addict who watches more than her fair share of programming, quite possibly exceeding the number of hours two average Americans supposedly watch. However, there is a TV in the dining area off the kitchen and we usually have something on while we eat.

One of the shows that we both currently like to watch is the SPEED Channel program, Pinks.

If you’ve never seen or heard of it, the basic jist is that two guys each bring a car to race. Quarter-mile drags, with negotiations between each run. The guy who can win three races first goes home with two cars.

This show is a no-brainer that I’d like it, but the fact that the wife has taken a liking to it, considering her attitude towards me racing, is very surprising.

I personally consider drag racing to be overly abusive to vehicles and never really played in the short-haul game. I ran RWD imports, most of which had independant rear suspensions and low-to-moderate torque numbers, neither of which is very good for quarter mile runs. I instead preferred timed distance or just straight heads up distance runs.

In last night’s episode, it was two 80’s Mustangs, which is always entertaining as the 80’s Mustangs are just about the ultimate mass-produced platform for running quarters.

What makes me write about this is that during the second run, the dude in the newer Stang put up a full on wheel stand, smacking the rear bumper on the ground. When the wife saw this, for the first time, mind you, she said something rather unladylike.

I had to make a split second decision to not explain the physics behind wheelstanding, which would have probably just annoyed her, and instead opt for agreeing with her that it was very “Whoa!” and that if she’d come with me out to the local drag track, she could see something like that live and in person.

We’ll see where that goes.

And that brings me to a question: Does anyone here know where I can look up old racing photos and other minutae on this here interweb?

I remember as a kid, my dad having a poster of someone (I’m pretty sure it was a woman) who had one of those 1960’s Dodge vans that was factory convereted into a “truck” of sorts and took it around on the drag circuit for wheelstanding competitions.

It’s nothing important, just an itch I need scratched.

More Dungy Hated

It’s gone mainstream.

In a post from yesterday’s Huff-A-Ton Post, Lane Hundson (best known as the plant who sent the Mark Foley e-mails to the willing media right before the 2006 election) links up the story of Dungy being “A Homophobe”.

I was already rooting for Indy, but “Go Colts!” anyway.

Doing it together

Just your friendly Pac NW blogger giving all the Washington State residents a helping hand.

Due to the Great RNS Blogstation Meltdown, I have to re-gather all of my links to the Washington State Legislature to put them in my “My Favorites” file. So ifn’ you’re wondering how this works, it goes a little something like this!

First, you have to go to the Find Your Legislator page and type in your address. If you’re concerned about giving them your address, just give them your neighbor’s.

Ta-Da! I’m in the 27th Legislative District. There’s my State Senator and my two State Representatives, unfortunately all Dems.

There are links their state webpage which contain links to their personal webpages, but more importantly, to their committee assignments and their bill sponsorships.
We’ll use my Senator, Debbie Regala’s link as an example.

Let’s see, Deb is the Dem Majority Whip and Vice Chair of the Human Services and Corrections Committee. She also serves on the Rules Committee, Ways & Means as well as the Water, Energy & Telecommunications Comittees.

And going through the Bill Sponsorship Links, she joined Senators Rodney Tom, Jeanne Kohl-Welles, Adam Kline, Darlene Fairley, Ed Murray, Brian Weinstein and Ken Jacobsen (all white Democrats) in co-sponsoring the anti-Gun Show Senate Bill.

More letters to write!

Remember how the Dem Majority shuffled the anti-Gun Show bill to an obscure committee to make sure that it got passed out onto the floor for a vote? Well, if you go to the Legislative Committees page, you can find all the committees of both houses of the legislature.

Or, if you want to look up a bill by either it’s number or with a brief description, you can go to the Bill Information page.

For you folks who aren’t in Washington State, I have Googled a few of my neighboring states and their sites are quite similar, some being better, some worse.

I encourage you to make at least a weekly stop in on your legislature and keep an eye on those anti-freedom bastards. If you need a reason, just remember the state employs people whose job it is to watch the site stats. Keep those page view numbers up. Let them know we’re watching.

I’ll be back tomorrow with some actual good news on the topic of firearms in Washington State.

RNS Quote of the Day: 01/31/07

Continuing on with yesterday’s theme:

There is probably no other country that, like Switzerland, gives the soldier his weapon to keep in the home. The Swiss always has his rifle at hand. It belongs to the furnishings of his home. That corresponds to the ancient Swiss tradition; the Swiss soldier lives in constant companionship with his rifle. He knows what that means. With his rifle, he is liable every hour, if the country calls, to defend his hearth, his home, his family, his birthplace. The weapon is to him a pledge and a sign of honor and freedom. The Swiss does not part with his rifle.

President Phillipp Etter at a June 1939 shooting festival

If only we could do the same here.

Guess what Portland residents: You’re all dead

Because the City of Portland is going to try to take care of you in case of an emergency.

City leaders met Monday to work on its evacuation plan.

That plan is a work in progress. Mayor Tom Potter, department heads, emergency planners and others envision several scenarios where an evacuation might be necessary. However, they agree that the most likely one would be a major earthquake.

Seismologists say a huge, devastating quake is only a matter of time. Whether that’s a lot of time or little time is unknown. But some geologists say that, judging by historic patters, the region is about due.

Emergency responders, including police and fire bureaus, would bear much of the responsibility for getting people out of town. But it’s an overwhelming task which could turn chaotic. Even if nearly everyone got out, there are questions about what would happen to those left behind – or possibly to those who might deliberately stay behind, to defend their homes, or to loot them.

Portland’s many bridges are potential bottlenecks. So are the freeways. According to emergency planner Shawn Graff, “the transportation infrastructure, the bridges could be down, the waterways could be impassable.”

The details of the plan are still being worked out. They’ll be tested in October, when the federal government will run an emergency preparedness drill.

I really do find it disgusting when city planners try and plan for something more involved than where they’re all going to eat luch later in the day. Mostly because it breeds a sense of contentment in the population about what they themselves can do to prepare.

My other reason is that the government always wants to tell folks “The How” and “The When”. Remember, the government will only help you on their own terms, so the less you want their help, the more they’r going to try and give it to you when they get around to it.

The way I see it, the city can go right on ahead and write down whatever plan they feel like, because 1. The city is run by far left Dems who could fuck up a ham sandwich, and 2. No plan withstands first contact with whatever it was designed to be for.

But if they could just please not advertise the plan.

Seattle did this a few years back with the FEMA crew. There was a giant warehous that was being torn down for the above-ground light-rail station and, before the city had all the debris hauled away, they pretended a dirty bomb on a traincar went off.

Their disaster plan was a disaster and nearly everyone ended up with a red “you’re dead” tag. They said shortly thereafter that they had improved the previous plan and fixed the things that had gone wrong, and as expected, everyone cheered.

I’m so glad I got the fuck out of that town.
