This Weekend

On this upcoming Sunday, the Superbowl will be played between the Chicago Bears and the Indianapolis Colts.

So, who do you want to win?

If you’re a good leftist, you absolutely must root for Chicago

Indianopolis Colts Coach Tony Dungy’s Anti-Gay Agenda

To all you Colts fans out there, know that your team’s head coach is on board with the radical anti-homosexual agenda. Atrios links to the AOL Sports Blog, which reports that Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy will headline an event for the Indiana Family Institute, an anti-gay pack of homo-hatin’ hoosiers.

Gooooooooooooooooo Bears!

They are entirely serious. Hit the link if you don’t believe me.

Oh Shite!

You have got to be kidding me!

From the UK Sun:

JAIL bosses are rebuilding toilets so Muslim inmates don’t have to use them while facing Mecca.

Thousands of pounds of taxpayers money are being spent to ensure lags are not offended.

The Islamic religion prohibits Muslims from facing or turning their backs on the Kiblah — the direction of prayer — when they visit the lav.

Muslim lags claimed they have had to sit sideways on prison WCs.

But after pressure from faith leaders the Home Office has agreed to turn the existing toilets 90 degrees at HMP Brixton in London.

The Home Office refused to reveal the cost of the new facilities — part of an “on-going refurbishment”.

One Muslim former inmate said: “The least the Prison Service can do is make sure people can practise their religion correctly in prison.”

But a Brixton jail officer said: “If they didn’t get locked up for committing crime they would not have this problem. Yet we have to sort out their loos. If we weren’t paying for it as taxpayers I’d laugh my socks off.”

Around a quarter of prisoners at the Category B jail are Muslims.

By Ourselves, For Ourselves: Part 2.11

Hmmph. If it wasn’t for the great RNS computer blowout of 07, I’d have had this to you yesterday.

In Part 2.1 I wrote about making your electricity with gasoline and/or diesel when times get hard. A couple of readers posted in the comments section of that post wondering if I had any info on Propane fired generators.

The short answer at that time was: No. But I am very glad they asked.

I had heard of them, but I knew of no one who had ever run one and this here interweb was not giving up any info. Reader R.S. said that the big-box hardware store, Lowes, had them for sale and on display, so I went and checked them out. Despite what their commercials say about “knowledgeable associates”, neither of the guys at my local stores could tell me much about them. I went to their competitor, Home Depot, and had the same problem.

Well, I had found out that they exist, which was half the battle, so I went to my local propane retailer and got the necessary info, including some links. And that is where we will start.

RNS Quote of the Day: 01/30/07

Have no fear! I have found a copy of my cut and pasted QotD files that wasn’t on my old PC’s hard drive!

There was no Holocaust on Swiss soil. Swiss Jews served in the militia side by side with their fellow citizens and kept rifles in their homes just like everyone else. It is hard to believe that there could have been a Holocaust had the Jews of Germany, Poland and France had the same privilege.

Next time, kill more of us. Please!

That is the basic message in this LA Times editorial by David A. Bell

Imagine that on 9/11, six hours after the assault on the twin towers and the Pentagon, terrorists had carried out a second wave of attacks on the United States, taking an additional 3,000 lives. Imagine that six hours after that, there had been yet another wave. Now imagine that the attacks had continued, every six hours, for another four years, until nearly 20 million Americans were dead. This is roughly what the Soviet Union suffered during World War II, and contemplating these numbers may help put in perspective what the United States has so far experienced during the war against terrorism.

It also raises several questions. Has the American reaction to the attacks in fact been a massive overreaction? Is the widespread belief that 9/11 plunged us into one of the deadliest struggles of our time simply wrong? If we did overreact, why did we do so? Does history provide any insight?

Certainly, if we look at nothing but our enemies’ objectives, it is hard to see any indication of an overreaction. The people who attacked us in 2001 are indeed hate-filled fanatics who would like nothing better than to destroy this country. But desire is not the same thing as capacity, and although Islamist extremists can certainly do huge amounts of harm around the world, it is quite different to suggest that they can threaten the existence of the United States.

Yet a great many Americans, particularly on the right, have failed to make this distinction. For them, the “Islamo-fascist” enemy has inherited not just Adolf Hitler’s implacable hatreds but his capacity to destroy. The conservative author Norman Podhoretz has gone so far as to say that we are fighting World War IV (No. III being the Cold War).

But it is no disrespect to the victims of 9/11, or to the men and women of our armed forces, to say that, by the standards of past wars, the war against terrorism has so far inflicted a very small human cost on the United States. As an instance of mass murder, the attacks were unspeakable, but they still pale in comparison with any number of military assaults on civilian targets of the recent past, from Hiroshima on down.

Poor Mr. Bell forgets that Hiroshima was not a “civilian target”. Neither was Nagasaki.

And I do wonder if a guy who is asking, nay, DEMANDING, that more than 3000 Americans be killed before we next respond militarily would be willing to include himself or any of his family members or any of his friends in that next, larger number?

For some reason, I doubt that.

Despite their blather

Reality intrudes upon the “Reality Based Community”

Nobody in the Reineke family is happy about Michigan’s first minimum wage increase in 10 years.

Nineteen-year-old John Reineke’s work hours at a snack shop at Central Michigan University were cut in half when the minimum wage went up the first time in October, and his family’s ice cream shop will employ fewer workers this summer when the wage goes up again.

Like the Reinekes’ ice cream shop, businesses across the state — from small restaurants to colleges to Goodwill Industries — are bracing for the second bump in the state’s minimum in July, when it will increase from $6.95 an hour to $7.15. It will go up a third time, to $7.40, on July 1, 2008.

About 464,000 Michigan workers, or about one in six, will directly benefit from the increases, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Advocates of the increases say they’re long overdue and will help families and the economy in the long run.

But hundreds of businesses — mostly small and mostly in the service industry, particularly fast food — disagree. They say they are cutting workers’ hours, hiring fewer workers and raising the prices of their goods to make up for the extra expense of the higher wages. Critics also question the timing of the increases, saying they only do more damage to a state already in financial straits.

In any given week, you can visit a left-wing blog and find some sort of link to some Keynesian economist who will articulate that raising the minimum wage does not cut the number of minimum wage jobs.

But these economists have 1. Never run their own small business employing minimum wage employees, and 2. Rarely, if ever, ventured outside of their protected little university teaching jobs to see how things work in the real world.

So what the leftists have is a number of long treatises about how the minimum wage is a good thing that helps people out. They read them as gospel and if ever someone invades their little bubble with something from reality, like this article, they immidately blame the business owner for not taking what I have heard called numerous time as “A Cut in Profits”.

They are a sick bunch of fucks, aren’t they?

A Voice of Sanity Amongst the Extremists

George Taylor, top-dog at the Oregon Climate Sevice is getting himself into some hot water with the Global Warming Death Cult (pun intended).

Experts square off on climate change

The climate gurus of Oregon and Washington could hardly be further apart on the greatest climate and environment issue of our time: global warming.

Philip Mote, the state climatologist in Washington, is part of a University of Washington research group that is trying to prepare the region for the hard realities of human-caused global warming: shrinking mountain snow that leaves rivers short of precious summer flow, for example.

George Taylor, who heads the Oregon Climate Service, has a different view: It’s not clear humans are causing warming. The world has been warmer before, he says. Natural ups and downs have a bigger hand in temperatures than people do.

And for this, he will probably lose his job as the State of Oregon’s Weatherman in the near future. It is clear from the article that the Guvnor doesn’t like him.

And it is for voices of sanity like Mr. Taylor that I have created two new categories to which this post will be the first to be included:

This guy should seek serious psychoanalytical attention

David Gerard believes that guns have personalities

I heard it explained like this in grade school. A person can pound nails with a hammer, or a person can hit someone over the head with it. The hammer is neutral. What people do with a hammer can be good or bad.

The National Rifle Association uses the argument in defense of guns: Guns don’t kill people. People kill people.

I don’t attribute complete neutrality to things, though. Oatmeal and rice cakes are close to neutral, but that’s about it.

A hammer, a simple tool, is not impersonal. And the more complicated tools and machines get, like guns, the more personal they get. Guns don’t like living beings. Their goal is to eliminate living beings. My computer at work doesn’t hate me, but I’m telling you, the thing barely tolerates me.

Saying “A computer is neutral and that it’s only what we do with it that determines good or evil” doesn’t tell the whole story — just like saying “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people” doesn’t cut it.

As an additional bit of information on Mr. Gerard, here he is washing the car he drove in college.

Sounds reasonable to me.

It could never be government’s fault

That is the stance of the Violence Policy Center’s Legislative Director, Kristen Rand, on the topic of the State of Florida screwing up and issuing Concealed Pistol Licenses to felons.

In Ms. Rand’s own words, the blame is to be laid at the feet of the NRA

Critics, however, say the NRA pressures lawmakers to ignore the problem.

“The people who are intimately familiar with these laws, the people at the NRA, they know exactly what’s going on,” said Kristen Rand, legislative director of the nonprofit Violence Policy Center. Florida’s gun lobby and the program’s administrators “know they’re permitting some bad people, but they don’t want the general public to know that.”

Yes, because the NRA has always stood for the gun rights of felons!

Oh wait, probably not.
