Excellent News

Times Two!

Before I write about the items I alluded to yesterday, I would like to let everyone know that the hearing for SB 5197, the anti-Gun Show bill, has finally been set.

One week from today, on February 8th, at 1530 in Senate Hearing Room 4 in the John A. Cherberg Senate Office Building, the Washington State Senate Labor, Commerce, Research & Development Committee will hold their hearing on SB 5197.

The Heartless Libertarian has the Gun Owners Action League alert cut and pasted at his place. You should read through that.

I will be there. I may have to cut blogging short on that day so that I can get up four hours early for work to make it, but to say that this is important would be an understatement. I will be taking A/V equipment along and whatever they allow will be used and the results posted here on the following Friday.

If you are in Western Washington and would like to attend, let me know and we’ll see if we can connect for a shared ride or a convoy of sorts. I’m in Tacoma, about 45 minutes to Oly with decent traffic.

On a side note, it looks as though someone at the Washington State Brady affiliate, Ceasefire Washington, has someone inside the LCR&D Committee as they had the date, time and place announced before it even went up on the State’s website.

If that doesn’t scare you, check your pulse.

In other good firearms news in Washington, some folks in the Washington Legislature have finally taken notice of the happenings during Katrina and have set up a pair of bills that would make sure no state authority can prohibit the possession of firearms during a disaster.

House Bill 1633 – Protecting the constitutionally guaranteed right to the lawful possession of firearms during an emergency.

Senate Bill 5516 – Concerning the seizure or confiscation of firearms during a state of emergency or natural disaster.

Earlier this year the Washington State Supreme Court actually did something right and declared the Right to Keep and Bear Arms an individual right, per the State Constitution, so these bill would just be icing on the cake.

Nonetheless, I want them in the books.

As a side note, not that this will be a surprise to anyone, if you look at each of the bills introduced that deal with firearms, the pro-civil rights bills were all sponsored by R’s and the anti-civil rights bill sponsored by D’s.
