Don’t believe the hype!

When the left gets into rant mode about their plans to socialize our healthcare, one of the topics they always hit on is how much we spend on it as a nation.

But don’t believe the hype!

Health Care: It must be in some handbook somewhere: Any time the subject comes up, lawmakers or governors or presidents pitching reform plans say the U.S. spends “too much” on health care. But is it true?

Here’s how Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., put it in January when he introduced his latest plan to nationalize health care: “National health spending has grown . . . to $2.3 trillion this year. Those aren’t just numbers, they’re massive burdens for working families.”

Others are usually quick to follow, saying that we spend far more than other industrialized nations. A recent Kaiser Family Foundation paper notes that health care spending in the U.S. is “at least 24% higher than in the next highest-spending countries, and over 90% higher than in many other countries that we would consider global competitors.”

Worse, the story goes, spending appears to be increasing at an alarming rate, up 362% between 1984 and 2004, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The Kaiser report says that health spending as a share of gross domestic product went from 8.8% in 1980 to 15.2% in 2003.

But is this really a crisis in desperate need of a government solution? The short answer: No.

Unless, of course, you also think that we have a recreation crisis, or a fitness club crisis, or a computer crisis. After all, spending on these and other things went up just as fast, if not faster, than spending on health care. Recreation spending, for example, was up 386% between 1984 and 2004. Spending on health clubs was up more than 300%; spending on computers rocketed 1,600%.

Just because spending on health care is going up at a fast pace in the U.S. isn’t necessarily a sign that something is wrong. More likely it is a sign that we are a wealthy nation that, by and large, has taken care of the essentials of life. As a result, we can afford to spend a bigger chunk of each extra dollar we make on former luxuries, like better vacations, a new laptop and gold-plated health care.

The socialized medicine cheerleaders on the left never want to mention the facts of those last couple paragraphs. I wonder why?

Here are some more facts to keep in your debate book.

The U.S. not only leads the world in spending on health care, but also in spending on education and on IT investments. There are more cars per capita in the U.S. than in any other industrialized country. We’re fatter than people in other countries, too, if excessive food consumption is also a measure of success.

Here’s something else to consider. According to the OECD, the top spenders on health care on a per capita basis are the U.S., Luxembourg, Switzerland and Norway. The top countries in terms of per capita income: Luxembourg, the U.S., Norway and Switzerland. Clearly there’s a relationship between economic health and spending on health care.

Doh! It’s the cost of living, stupid. When you make more per person then another country, things in your country are….wait for it…..gonna cost more!

Make sure you follow the link to the article and read the last few paragraphs.

It’s a Human Rights violation, I tell ya!

So I get to work yesterday even ing and I’m logging into my computer, same as I do every damn day. I click the IE icon so that I can fire up the GPS program and get that portion of my day out of the way and I get a screen telling me that my employer is blocking my homepage.

I bound about, clicking on a few links and everything is blocked. I fire up the not-up-to-par-with-management Firefox page and get the same deal.

I go to the page required for the GPS program and it comes up, but very slowly. It is as if every single bit of that page is being scanned with a magnifying glass by Bulah Ballbreaker. It finally comes up and I get to work.

Lunch time, I wander around again, and even get two or three successful page loads of other sites, but no more RNS at work and very little of much else.

This will be a problem for a week or so until I get a new workaround in place. This isn’t the first time they’ve done this, but I’ve never had RNS blocked before, so it may be a while before the IT crew in our national HQ rebel and drop the blocker.

Somebody or a group of somebodies got caught doing something very bad, since that is always what preceeds this. Last time it was the MySpacers spending all day being each other’s “Friends”. Before that it was someone using the company computers to make some extra cash as a spammer.

I hope this time it is a porn related offense. Those are always the funniest.

I know it wasn’t anything to do with my Sunday post because there is no way they could get the URLs for the GPS pages (each division has their own) to the IT people to make sure it wasn’t blocked in one day. That probably took at least most of last week.

But from what I’ve been able to find out, this block is nationwide and company-wide. It orginiated where it always does, at Nat HQ. But the problem with doing that it means that no one, not even the IT gods at HQ can get out, and that really annoys them. So they slowly but surely start dropping portions of the blocker. But that could be weeks, so I’m figgering out a workaround.

In the mean time though, I will not be able to read on my lunches and breaks, which may limit the amount of total blogging material I am able to process for here before I have to pass-out for the day. I read and collect links at work and then come home and do my posting. Missing the first part means I’ll either have to bring books (could be a plus) or write more original stuff (could be a minus, since I’m an asshole).

But, I’ll start with the revising of the By Ourselves Series of posts and work from there until I get my workaround to take.

Getting the Third World Treatment

So yesterday was my date with destiny at the Washington State Department of Licensing. Every five years I, like other Washingtonians, get to visit the state offices and take our eye exams and pay our $25 to renew our licenses to drive (although now it looks like they’re switching to some sort of internet based renewal system).

I showed up 15 minutes early because as the old saying goes “If you’re early, you’re on time. If you’re just on time, you’re late.”

There was a line around the building. I had driven by there before and seen the same thing, but decided that I would wait for another day. Well, another day came and there was no more waiting; time was up.

So I stand in the drizzle with everyone else and I count that I’m the 39th person in this line. Oh joy!

We get let in and take our numbers from the machine. I take a seat along the wall as close as I can to the counter so that I could watch and hear the action, because I knew it would be comical because 60% of the people in the room at that time had manila envelopes and spoke little to no English.

Can you guess what was in those envelopes? Anyone? Bueller?

You are correct! Metricula Consular cards! (along with what I am sure were many other useless documents)

Now, before you get all worked up, let me tell you a little bit more about this comedy of errors.

First, the employees at this branch did not seem to enjoy having to “work with” the non-English speakers. They stuck with English for as long as they could before switching over to Gringo.

Second, when you get your license in Washington for the first time, you have to take a computerized multiple choice test. I did not know this, and you can’t tell by the rest of the driving public, but you have to pass it with an 80% score.

Not one single non-english speaker whom I saw head over to the testing bays had passed their test. They were allowed to come back that afternoon and take it again, but since those computers don’t have any language other than english on them, these folks won’t be getting their licenses any time soon.

95 minutes later, it is finally my turn to go up to the counter.

I had been watching the people working behind the counter and was hoping for this one particular guy who also did the license photgraphs. I could tell that having to speak Gringo was really pissing him off and I wanted to ask him a few questions about his job. I get all my information passed on to him and I ask him about job stuff, etc.

He gets all my information entered and he starts in with the standard questions about driving records in other states (not that he has any way to look that up and verify it) and about being an organ donor, etc. He then asks me a question along the lines of ‘Have I had any blackouts in the past year that would impare me from driving?’.

My first thought was “If I did, I wouldn’t tell you” but I just answered an honest “No” and followed up with “But I ain’t been right since the racoon bit me.” This annoyed his co-worker in the booth next to him because my guy laughed out loud and I don’t think that is allowed to do that while on the clock.

So we get done, in almost one-third of the time that the non-english speakers took (4min versus over 10mins) and it is time for my photo. I’m feeling about half-lit because it is almost 10:45 and I’m supposed to be sleeping, so as I take my hat and coat off for the picture, ask him if I can pose.

I’d heard his standard speech a dozen or so times while I was waiting my turn “Look here for three seconds. Smile if you wish.” And I figured that if folks could smile, I shoul be allowed to pose.

I showed him my pose, he laughed again and said “Go for it.”

This was my pose.

Breeders Only May Apply

Last year, the Washington State Supreme Court ruled that the Washington version of the Defense of Marriage Act was Constitutional because, according to the state Constitution, marriage was reserved to be between only a man and a woman for the purpose of procreation.

Yes, it sounds exactly as dumb as the reason given by the people who want special rights solely because of who they like the get nekkid with, but it put a stop to these stupid rulings in my state being shoved down my throat by a court system.

Because they think they have a sense of humor, the people who want laws written to cover their emotions have stepped up with Citizen’s Initiative #957.

I-957 states that if a couple does not procreate within three years of their wedding day, they can face forced annulment by the state.

Yes, read that again. No, it won’t make any more sense.

Here is a quote from the leader of the group who filed I-957

Gregory Gadow, who filed I-957 last month, said the three-year timeframe was arbitrary.

“We did toy with the idea of (requiring) procreation before marriage,” he said. “We didn’t want to piss off the fundamentalists too much.”

Gadow said that if the group’s initiatives were passed, the Supreme Court would be forced to strike them down as unconstitutional, which he believes would weaken the original ruling upholding the Defense of Marriage Act.

But he said he highly doubts any of the initiatives will pass, and that they are being done “in the spirit of political street theater.”

Well, theater is one of the things the same-sex marriage crowd is good at. I just don’t like it being brought in as a political tool. You’d hate to see the acts the paper mache puppets for this issue are doing.

Myself, I just like practicing making kids too much to actually commit to the raising of them. Smelly, noisy, unreasonable, and if they’re anymore like me than that, I may just have to kill them (and I’m told that is a crime). So no kids for me.

Go right ahead, annul my marriage, ya heiny humpin’ gaybees, the wife and I will just get married every four years. We liked the gifts we got the first time around, so it’ll be like a “special anniversary” when that three-year mark arrives.

Plus, can you imagine the amount of money going to JoPs and ministers if this passes! They’ll be swimming in cash!

Stupid Government Tricks

Louisiana isn’t the only state in the union with levees; Washington State has its fair share.

Not only does Washington have its fair share of levees, we’re second in the nation for levees that are at high risk of failure per the Army Corps of Engineers (thanks for stealing our thunder again, California!).

The Corps has been gathering up information on all the nation’s levees since the failure of the ones in NOLA, and has them set up in a database. Washington State has 19 of the worst ones in the nation.

And here is the problem: After the CoE builds them, it turns their maintenance over to the local governments and gets the fed to give them big buckaroos to maintain them. Unfortunately for local residents, the local governments have been pissing the money away on other things.

I’m sure you’ll be completely shocked to hear that all of these “high risk” levees are in King County, who is now screaming that they need more money to do the repairs and maintenance that they should have been doing all along.

Levee sponsors have been given a year to correct deficiencies, Leyde said. If they fail to meet the government’s maintenance criteria, they risk losing eligibility for federal money to help pay for damage in a disaster.

The levees targeted in Washington state fall under the responsibility of King County Water and Land Resources, said Mark Isaacson, director of the county agency.

The department is aware of a number of structural and maintenance issues concerning all 500 of its levees, including some identified by the corps, he said.

“We’ve already identified a plan to fix them. What we need now is the money,” Isaacson said, adding that between $179 million and $335 million would be needed over the next 10 years to cover necessary repairs and maintenance.

The word “Incompetence” doesn’t even begin to cover how badly King County has screwed this pooch. If I wasn’t such a nice guy, I’d wish failure on every single one of these levees before the end of next winter, so that when they fail, the residents will learn that it was the Democrat leadership of King County that cost them their homes by taking the levee maintenance money and spending it on carpool lanes.

The Big Props Post

First, the personal props:

Big Props go to RNS Ether-Deity Craig at MTPolitics for telling me where I could find the info that would let me back into the FTP server where The Soundboard Files are stored. Those of y’all who didn’t stop by yesterday can scroll down to see what you missed.

Big Props also go to RNS commenter, Freddy Boom-Boom, for telling me how to make the hard drive from the previous RNS Blogstation funtional once again. Btw, while the one I bought isn’t on this list, these things kick ass.

Now for the national props:

Congrats and proper respect goes out to the Indianapolis Colts for winning The Superbowl and the Chicago Bears for showing up to play 10 minutes or so of offense.

I was talking with folks more knowledgable than I about football before the game, wondering why the premier state-of-the-art football stadium in Seattle, Qwest Field (that my tax dollars are paying for) hasn’t been called up for Superbowl duty. Their answer was that the ‘weather’ in Seattle isn’t reliable enough. Basically, the NFL is too afraid it will rain on their parade, so they only hold Superbowls in domes and in staduims in the southern portion of the country.

Well screw the NFL. They went to Miami and got a soggy game while us folks in Seattle/Tacoma area were enjoying 50 degrees and mildly overcast skies.

This has been a production of RNS Blogservice. Any accounts or descriptions of the blog are expressly forbidden without prior approval of RNS (or a link of some sort).

They moved from the bed to the wall

No, that isn’t an excerpt of a saucy romance novella, it is a company you may have heard of called Line-X.

Explosive Experts and University Researchers at New Mexico Tech’s Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center (EMRTC) conducted a series of explosions that confirmed the protective capabilities of a new blast-proof paint for buildings – Line-X!

EMRTC Explosive Experts tested two identical concrete structures, one unprotected and one painted with a blast-proof coating made by Line-X Corporation, with catastrophic TNT and C4 blasts. Each room contained an office setting complete with crash-test dummy, desk and computer equipment.

“The dummy in the Line-X protected room was unscathed,” said Alan Perryman, EMRTC’s Research Engineer and Test Specialist. “A little dust kicked up, and the wall flexed and pounded like a giant drum, but everything held up just fine. We at EMRTC are very impressed with the way the Line-X protected room held up.”

For those without trucks, Line-X is the “Hot Ticket” for lining truckbeds against damage, rust and corrosion. I’ve got it on my 98 F-150 and, despite me best attempts, I haven’t even put so much as a scratch in the stuff.

Shortly after I purchased Grimm, I made an inquiry about “painting” his entire outer shell with the stuff. Unfortunately, the weight issue was the only thing that stopped that train of thought.

However, coating a building in their product sounds like a wonderfull idea. While expensive at the outset, I can’t think of much that ‘ol Ma Nature could throw at said structure that would make you even have to repaint it for 20 years.

Hiding behind my tax money

Despite what Washington State Democratic Representatives and Senators would tell you, we have a crime problem here. More precisely, we have a criminal recidivism problem.

In fact, since October, the Seattle Police Department has lost two officers and the King County Sheriff’s Department has lost a Deputy, all due to career criminals who were on probation. Each and every one of these criminals had broken the rules of their probation numerous times, yet because of the attitude of the Washington State Department of Corrections, these violations were let slide with minimal, if any punishment.

Local ABC affiliate published an article on this problem

Three local police officers have been killed recently, and one thread links all three deaths. In each case, the suspect was a convict on probation, and each one supervised by the State Department of Corrections.

KOMO 4 News tried repeatedly to get the Department of Corrections to talk to us, even sending them a list of our questions.

They declined.

A whistleblower came forward, risking everything to tell us what’s wrong at Department of Corrections.

“They’re hiding everything. Everything’s under a cloud,” the source said.

Our source claims the Department of Corrections’ failure to hold three career felons accountable is the reason three local police officers are dead.

Officers Beth Nowak and Joselito Barber were killed in violent car wrecks. King County Deputy Steve Cox was shot by a felon on probation.

“They died for nothing,” the source said. “My department could have done more.”

Last December, King County Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Cox was gunned down by Raymond Porter, a known gang member and drug dealer on probation.

“It needn’t have happened,” said Joan Cox, Steve Cox’s mother. “It shouldn’t have happened. That young man should not have been on the streets.”

“We’re angry,” added his father Ron. “We’re starting to ask questions as to whether this could have been avoided.”

Porter had been out of prison just four months when he shot Deputy Cox. And DOC’s own documents show that time and time again, they let Porter violate his probation with only minor consequences.”

Documents show he failed repeatedly to report to his community corrections officer.

He flunked drug tests, and confessed to using alcohol too. And never entered court ordered drug treatment.

King County Sheriff Sue Rahr is demanding answers.

We asked her: “If a felon on supervision is failing drug tests, is that a red flag?” Sheriff Rahr answered: “Absolutely.”

DOC records show Porter failed to report at least six times. Each time, his probation officer sent letters or used the telephone to try to find him.

No one from DOC went to his home. And Porter’s file shows when he tested dirty for drugs, his toughest punishment was a verbal warning.

As was stated at the beginning of the article, the DOC is hiding behind their positions, which are funded by my tax dollars, and not answering anyone’s questions, not even those posed by the Chief of Police in the largest city in the state, or by the Sheriff of the largest county in the state.

They are playing ostrich and waiting for the public to forget that it all happened. On my dime.

If (Barely) Governore Gregiore were half the leader the leftards in this state who worship her thought she was, she’d have demanded answers from the DOC or had their jobs, and this insanity would end.

More Social Engineering

The current Mass Transit system in Seattle consists of 98% buses. We have one rail system running between Tacoma and Everett, with Seattle in between, but it is very limited in where you can get on/off and is frequently hampered by mud/land slides, especially during our wet winters.

One of the problems with riding the bus to where you want to go is that, well, someone else is driving and they have a number of other people to transport. One good stretch of repeated bicyclists and/or folks in wheelchairs who want to board and your buss will be hopelessly late for whereever you’re trying to go.

This includes your place of employment.

In fact, one of the largest complaints that people have is that they cannot rely upon the bus system to get them to work on time, and they would just prefer to drive their cars instead anyway, so they do.

One rather uppity pro-transit leftist blogger has the solution: Ezra Basom at the EvergreenPolitics.Com blog says that the cities and the state DOT need to make sure that the buses have preferred treatment in traffic, including, but not limited to:

1.The ability to control intersection signals

2. Bus only streets

3. Bus only lanes on the interstate and high traffic arterials

Basically, making it harder for people in cars to get anywhere. If you already have a commuter-buddy who you ride to work with, you’d better get a couple more, other wise you’ll be stuck in traffic with everybody else, because Ezra would have the “Carpool Lane” designated for buses and vehicles with 4 persons or more only.

Need to get to a business or an appointment on 3rd Ave in downtown Seattle? You had better be taking the bus, my friend. The city is cutting down on parking inside the downtown area and are thinking of cutting off any new licenses for lots or garages (that aren’t run by the city, of course). They are also looking at making 3rd Ave a “Bus Only Zone”.

City officials are also complaining that fewer people are shopping in downtown. Go figure.

Here is the county proposal. A number of Ezra’s suggestions are in there. 49 “Capital Improvements” to the transit system in both the city and in the county areas. Few, if any of them, will have more than a half-assed effect on bus traffic. Most of which will hamper the driving of your personal vehicle.

But by far, the most insipid idea Ezra has is to give control of the street lights to the buses. The state pays people hundreds of thousands of dollars to figure out the best way to program the stoplights so as to get the largest number of people through all directions of an intersection. Ezra would toss all that down the drain to cut an extra couple of mintes off the commute for a few dozen people.

I can’t find it right this second, but a couple weeks back a poster at another of the local left-wing sites was whining about how “Roads Cause Traffic”. After I stopped laughing I made sure to let them know that their premise was false in the same way that my keyboard does not cause me to misspell werds.

Traffic in this area is going to be so fucked.
