Ya gotta love government

OK, no you don’t, though if the Dems get much more power in DC, it will very likely be mandated.

As I mentioned in my cruise post, The Wife’s parents joined on this trip. They’re out here from Montana, so of course I asked them about this story:

After spending $1.6 million to install a community septic system for Rimini residents, the Environmental Protection Agency now wants to spend another $200,000 to remove most of it.

The federal agency also has reconsidered the price tag for building a community water treatment system for the 45 people who live in Rimini — a new estimate puts the cost at $4.4 million, up from $300,000 in the project’s Record of Decision issued in 2002.

That breaks down to a cost of about $98,888 per person, or $176,000 per household.

Actually, double that dollar figure, because half of the 45 residents are seasonal/recreational types, according to the father-in-law.

I wish that when I made a bad purchase with someone else’s money, that I could get more free money to fix whatever problems might arise.

Only in government work.

Btw, I’ve been asked to ask y’all not to laugh too hard at this example of expensive indecision.

Frazetta / Flashman

If you haven’t read the Flashman series of novels by George MacDonald Fraser, you’re in for a real treat. Flash for Freedom is particularly fun; Flashy visits the USA, with predictable results.
If you’re not acquainted with Frank Frazetta’s artwork, you’re also in for a treat. I think this may be one of two Flashman books for which he did a cover painting.flashman 2.jpgflashman.jpg

The really frustrating thing is that this image is nowhere to be found in Frazetta’s official gallery store.

If anybody reading this knows of an art print or poster of this painting, I’d love to hear from ya.

Sunday Gun Porn: S&W Safety Hammerless 4th Model

Here’s another one of my little revolvers in the fun .38 S&W cartridge (NOT .38 Special). These are built on the I frame, which is significantly smaller than the J frame that’s the tiniest in S&W’s current lineup. These I-frame jobbies make for an extremely handy and light revolver, even with a relatively long (6″) barrel as here:

I just love those sweeping lines! Yes, it’s been reblued. I don’t mind that one bit — I buy my guns to shoot, not to be safe queens. Also I can get them cheaper if I’m not picky about “original finish” and all that.

Oh yeah, the sights suck. Back then the idea seemed to be “make the sights tiny and you’ll be more precise.” Not!

Ronald Reagan’s Rancho del Cielo:

Rancho Del Cielo.jpg

From the Reagan Diaries:

Thursday, August 6 – Thursday, September 3 [1981]

…Each day we rode in the A.M. then in the afternoon Barney, Dennis & I with vol. help from Dr. Ruge & our mil. aides cut up downed limbs & built brush piles for rainy season burning. Ten days of this — our longest single stretch at the ranch. The S.S. agents have caps titled U.S.S.S. Mounted Patrol. They have become enthusiastic horsemen.

M1A Substitute

Can’t afford a California-legal M1A, at a couple grand  by the time you add sales tax? Well, you can pick up this baby instead. No pistol grip, so it can accept detachable magazines. Ultra-reliable Kalashnikov design, shoots the fine .308 round, and costs under $400.

Saiga 308 scoped.jpg
And it’s technically California-legal. You just have to be prepared for an over-zealous DA to possibly charge you with possession of an eeeevil prohibited AK-series assault rifle. Never mind that it’s a Saiga, not an AK. You will likely get the charges dismissed, but only with an equally-zealous lawyer by your side fighting for you, and that costs money.
So, as long as you factor in the cost of the retainer you should pay to keep Trutanich-Michel (by all accounts the top pro-gun lawyers in California) on your side, go ahead and buy that “cheap” .308 Saiga.

Boy, I’m thisclose to buying one some days. It’s like an upscaled version of my .223 Kel-Tec and would go so nicely next to its little brother in the gun safe.

Then the I get cold feet and look wistfully at the M1As again.

I Like You, I Really Like You

The Packing Rat noticed that I linked to him in my “David Likes” corner of the blogroll.

Check him out from time to time. I like his style of gun reviews and range reports — lots of very kewl pictures (with classy logos, too, I might add). Can’t go wrong there!

Here’s an extremely well-illustrated review of a very nice Winchester bolt .22.

It’s hard to find good reviews of the Henry Survival Rifle, but he has what has to be in the running for the definitive set of reviews on this little gun — especially after he gets that scope mounted.
And here’s an Encore specialty pistol! Oh yeah, lots of good stuff here.

…And I don’t care what anybody says, Sally Field is hot.

Friday Lives!

I’ve made it crystal clear that my favorite Heinlein novel is Friday. Heinlein himself reportedly said of Michael Whelan’s cover painting, “Yep, that’s her!”

Friday.jpgWell, I’d never looked at Tamara K‘s picture before, so when I saw Tam’s image on the People of the Gun site, it rocked me back in my chair….

It’s those eyes, I tell ya!
