RNS Quote of the Day, 10/12/07 — Gore Admits It’s All A Bunch of Crap

I had a Quote of the Day up earlier. But having awakened to the news that the Goracle has won the Nobel Peace Prize, I thought it appropriate to re-post this little gem instead:

[Below originally written February 27, 2007]

…[S]ince his movie won for best documentary, I thought it might be appropriate to remind everyone of something I transcribed back in June 2006 on my lunch hour while watching Charlie Rose interview Al Gore:

CHARLIE ROSE: But are you saying, based on what you just said, that, in fact, some of the best scientists you talk to —
VICE PRESIDENT GORE: Yeah.
CHARLIE ROSE: — uh, step forward to you and say, “this [catastrophic human-induced global warming] is what I believe,”
VICE PRESIDENT GORE: Yeah.
CHARLIE ROSE: “and this is what I think is the reality,”
VICE PRESIDENT GORE: Yes.
CHARLIE ROSE: “but we can’t quite prove it yet to the rest of the scientific community.”
VICE PRESIDENT GORE: That’s right.
CHARLIE ROSE: That’s what they’re saying.
VICE PRESIDENT GORE: Yeah. But science thrives on uncertainty, by its nature….”

“Science thrives on uncertainty?!!” I just about choked on my sandwich.

How to Carve Up Your M1A

Inquiring minds wanted to know more about the M1A shortened to M1 Carbine length. I pulled that pic from a November 2005 TacticalForums thread by DocGKR that I can’t find anymore. The process, however, was fascinating — so I figure I’ll post the rest of the pics below and his comments:M1A_buttstock 1.jpgM1A_M1Carb_compare1.jpg

Friday Gun Porn

Silver Ghost 3.jpg

Encore 16″ specialty pistol in .257x.225 Improved. (Good heavens, I have no idea what that cartridge is.) Custom-chambered barrel by On Target Technologies, with shallow narrow flutes. The grip is also by OTT in Zebra Wood, and the owner finished the grip himself in a satin finish. He calls it the “Silver Ghost.” Burris 3-12 scope. Click on any of the pics to embiggen.

And here’s the first three shots from the new barrel after firing five to get on target. The red circle is 1/2″ diameter. These were fire-forming loads, he hasn’t tried for an accuracy load yet. More here.
Silver Ghost 4.jpg

OTT barrels are doing some pretty amazing things. Whether it’s the EDM process or just the care put into the work, these Contender, Encore and XP barrels are building a reputation for incredible accuracy. OTT is a one-man shop, by the way — wait times on barrel orders can be up to a year or more. Boy that seems worth it though….

Buses Make a Perfect Day

Over at Target Rich Environment, there’s discussion of and links to some rather chilling speculation about just what Bin Laden’s boys may be planning next. Seems that if you put a bunch of discrete pieces of info together, there’s the hint of a plan to perhaps ram a whole bunch of schoolbuses full of explosives into schools, or maybe just hijack some schoolbuses full of kids. In America. Ideally, all on the same day — what AQ seems to call their “Perfect Day” — the next 9/11.
And have we trained school bus drivers on how to handle a hijacking? On what to do if a couple of young Middle Eastern males climb on to the bus and go for a ride with the kids, as apparently has already happened once? Have we started nationwide screening of bus driver applicants to filter out and identify potential terrorists? No we have not.

Seems to me if this is at all credible, we should not merely initiate a national program to screen new and existing bus drivers, and provide those who pass with additional training, we should also — oh, I don’t know — encourage them to be CCW holders?

Of course, in California’s urban counties, CCWs are rare as hen’s teeth. So I guess we’ll have to depend on this guy:

Dirty Harry 3.jpg

Oh wait, he’s a fictional character.

As a Californian, I’m glad my daughter’s well past school-bus age.

RNS Landscape of the Day

Mystery Lake Landscape.jpg

Guess where. Hint: it’s in the Western United States.

Okay, that’s not much of a hint. It’s in the Pacific Northwest.

Not enough? There’s a really big hint below the fold.

Thursday Gun Porn

IMG_1111.jpg

Call it your Zen Garden moment for the week — if Zen can encompass drooling gun lust. Ohh, yeahhh. Look at that wood. Look at the perfect octagon flats. Hell, I even like how the stainless scope turret caps were replaced with black ones for contrast.

It’s an Encore, but I don’t know the caliber. Doesn’t matter, really, does it?

XP-100

Well, I can’t put anything past you guys. The mystery item from yesterday was immediately spotted by Ted Riedel as an upside-down XP-100 pistol stock.

7491337a7c702ea986a7832fd99bad2c.jpgI picked this one up as soon as I spotted it at Collectors as I am a southpaw and left-handed versions of these things are hard to find. Purty, huh?
Of course, that must mean I have a Remington XP-100 now…

The Soundboard: Pound of Sound

Week Seven

We’re gonna shift genres this week because, as it always happens, I’m having my ass kicked by an album I haven’t listened to in a decent while.

released in 1991 and hitting the charts with a ballad that had little to do with the rest of the album, Temple of the Dog was a Seattle supergroup of sorts. Not everyone was quite famous, but they were all well known enough for the video to go into heavy rotation and for record sales to go quite high.

But the fact that there were a bunch of already famous Seattle dudes on the album that should have made it sell so well. It should have been the scope of talent. This album is in my Top 5 for that era, if not my Top 3, and kicks my ass every time I listen to it. Perfect for Autumnal Northwest afternoons with headphones (if you’re an apartment dweller) or a decent 5.1 (if’n ya got a house).
And seeing as how Pearl Jam is free of Vedder now that he has his solo junk out and Audio Slave is finally dead, I would like to think that I can hope for a “reunion tour” or some such gathering.

Anyway, your Pound of Sound this week consists of this pair

Reach Down

Jammy and the lengthiest track on the disc. Gotta have it.

Call Me A Dog

Just wow. and everything on this album is Grade-A Groove-Blues with just the slightest hint of Seattle Metal for flavoring.

Enjoy

RNS Quote of the Day, 10/11/07

From a discussion on Monday’s NewsHour:

PETER RODMAN: I think we should start rolling up, as we have, rolling up Iranians that we catch on Iraqi soil, I think very aggressively, as we’ve started to do, detaining people, because they have no business making mischief in Iraq….

JUDY WOODRUFF: So continue to be aggressive in going after any Iranian presence?

PETER RODMAN: I think we have a big Iran problem, and the Iraq problem is one part of that.

Emphasis mine. Peter Rodman was until very recently assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs.
