Fred Rocked

...in last night’s Republican “debate.” I say that in quotes because with this many candidates on stage, there was precious little debating. It was more a batch of single questions directed to single candidates. Seriously, though, most of the candidates just need to pack up and go home. It’s going to be a lot more productive to have actual debates between a few frontrunners. At least the moderators positioned Mitt, Fred and Rudy in the center.

I have to admit Rudy’s looking a lot better than he did earlier this year. He’s articulate and focused. Romney is starting to have some deer-in-the-headlights moments and has got to be frustrated about Fred vaulting over him in a lot of polls after Mitt spent all that money to crawl into 2nd place.

However, I think Fred knocked it out of the park (although I missed the first 17 minutes, and his first answer was apparently hesitant and a bit of a stumble). But for the rest of the time Fred was calm, collected, gave direct responses, gave conservative responses, and looked tall, thin and tanned. He literally towers over everyone else on stage.

Hey, he looked Presidential to me!

This is gonna turn into Fred-vs.-Rudy real damn fast now.

Wednesday Gun Porn

M1A_M1Carb_compare.jpg

M1A Scout (top), chopped at both ends to have about the same handiness as an M-1 Carbine (bottom), while retaining a longer barrel than an M1A SOCOM (for more velocity and more reliable cycling with the original gas system). Now that’s a near-perfect SHTF rifle, right there. Of course the M1A fires the powerful .308 Win cartridge, vs. the relatively anemic .30 Carbine.

Yep, I gotta get me one of those M1As. California-legal, too!

What Is It?

Yes, it’s gun-related. That’s your only clue.

RNS Quote of the Day, 10/10/07

From the Reagan Diaries:

Monday, March 16 [1981]

Jerry Lewis came to the Oval Office with the M.D. poster girl — a beautiful child who I learned would probably die before the next year ends. What a terrible disease. Jerry has for 29 years worked to raise more than $400 mil. for research of M.D.

Paul Laxalt came by & played Santa Claus with gifts he’d received for me — including the most beautiful western belt buckle I’ve ever seen. He had a letter from an Irishman in Nev. who complained because he didn’t think I knew the R.W. Service poem “The Shooting of Dan McGrew.“ We put in a call to Nevada and after I convinced him I really was who I said I was I recited the poem to him. He’s a Dem. who I think may now turn Repub.

[That’s a hell of a poem, by the way. If you don’t know it, you’re in for a treat.]

Tuesday Gun Porn

Below in an artsy blue tint is my 3rd Model Smith & Wesson Top-Break revolver — in the .38 S&W chambering, of course. Look at those elegant lines! Yummy….
38 DA 3d Model.jpg(That’s .38 Short & Weak — less power than even a light-loaded .38 Special. Yes, you can still buy a factory load.)

Part of the reason I love my 940 Centennial is the similarity to the look of the old Top-Breakpix3531040015.jpg lines. The old hammerless top-breaks make thepix3531040046.jpg lineage crystal-clear:

You can see the rest of my little collection here.

The definitive book on top-breaks and other old Smiths is this one by gunsmith David Chicoine. It’s expensive but worth every penny if you own or collect these old-timers. Check his site out; he also has parts for sale for these old guns, including the elusive cylinder stops!

Notice I got the coveted spot next to Joe Huffman of Boomershoot and his lovely daughters (who are also very intelligent and quite competent with firearms and explosives…can we say Joe & Barbara raised themselves a pair of Heinlein heroines, boys & girls? I knew you could.)

Of course that goes both ways: it points out that I’m not so easy on the eyes as they are. Hey, you’re s’posed to be looking at the groups on my 600-yard target, anyway, not my balding pate & ugly mug.

Thanks to Jeff Soyer (Alphecca) for creating & hosting the site, to Linoge (great pic!) for making the T-shirts (go buy one!) and to everyone who wrote Laura Washington in response to her columns. (Oh look, she wrote another one.)

RNS Book Review: Everything I Need to Know About Life I Learned from Firefly

By Brother Linoge of Wallsofthecity, this little tome is a gem. Probably a mite less of one for non-Firefly fans, but a gem all the same.

Firefly book front.jpgI didn’t really know what to expect from it, and was pleasantly surprised to find it is a collection of eminently quotable homilies. It’s as though the Notebooks of Lazarus Long were ripped out of Heinlein’s Time Enough for Love and published on their own as a little chapbook (oh, I guess they were), except that in this case they’re inspired by lines, characters and scenarios from the Firefly/Serenity universe, and Linoge has the tone so perfect that almost every snippet reads as though it came direct from Joss Whedon’s pen.

Some excerpts, chosen at random:

Firefly book back.jpg“Firepower gives weight to arguments.”

“Dying a good death is still dying.”

“Some ships will be with you until the end of your life. That could be because they kill you.”

“High-tech sensor systems, armies of techs examining the data, and a network of a thousand ships can sometimes be upstaged by a single ingenious man. Use your eyes, and just your eyes, from time to time.”

“Always remember with whom you made love. And when.”

“Sometimes the best solution is to give the big gun to the big guy and let him sort it out. The other times, give it to the nutcase, and watch her go.”

In short, this little book is a must-have for Firefly fans. And if you’re not a Firefly fan, why, go buy the gorramed DVDs and watch ’em. Then, when your soul’s screaming “Why didn’t they make more?” come back and buy the book. It’ll ease your craving right nicely.

If you’re like me, you’ll buy two or more. You’re gonna be handing them out to folks.

Monday Night F…an

The wife watches more football than I do, but on those occasions when I did watch, both last season and again this preseason, I was thoroughly annoyed by the Monday Night F#$@ups in ESPN’s broadcast booth. Kornheiser in particular was just grating as all hell.

espn_nfl.jpgWell, work’s been busy enough that last night was the first time I’ve been able to sit back and watch even part of a regular season game, and I have to say that ESPN’s Monday Night crew did a great job. That was a thoroughly enjoyable show, with great commentary, actual analysis of plays, and only minimal interruptions by Tafoya interviewing people on the sidelines.

And here I thought ESPN was going to kill the franchise. I never thought I’d say this, but as of now you can call me an ESPN Monday Night Fan.

RNS Quote of the Day, 10/08/07

From the Reagan Diaries:

Thursday, July 23 [1981]:

Saw “Mommie” off for London & the Royal Wedding. I worry when she’s out of sight 6 minutes. How am I going to hold out for 6 days. The lights just don’t seem as warm & bright without her.

Went to the Oval office for the morning brief but my mind wasn’t on it. Met in the State Dining Room with St. Legislators, Mayors & Co. officials from a dozen states re the tax bill.

…

Watched the “Waltons” on TV and so to bed.
