Nothing better to do, I guess

In continuation of my post on the UK police problems from yesterday

A priest has been interviewed by police on suspicion of inciting racial hatred for expressing his Christian views in his parish newsletter.

Father John Hayes, 71, was quizzed for more than an hour after commenting on the case of a Muslim girl who went to court over her wish to wear a full veil in class.

A sergeant and community support officer turned up without warning at his presbytery after an allegation was made to a Scotland Yard ‘hate crimes’ unit.

The inquisition in Hornchurch, East London, prompted a furious row about policing priorities. In the past 12 months there have been five murders, 33 rapes, 424 robberies and 2,267 burglaries in the local police borough of Havering.

Yet, despite being accused of turning a blind eye to the inflammatory remarks of some Muslim preachers of hate, the Met still found time to quiz Mr Hayes.

I found this at LGF who labels it “Britain’s Orwellian Problem”. I see it somewhat differently. I see it as pure, unadulterated sloth.

It is much easier and safer to go and give the 3rd degree to a priest about something he wrote a year ago than it is to do actual police work. You quiet the overly vocal minority who are complaining loudly, get to fill out lots of paperwork showing how much “policing” you have done, and still have time to nip down for a pint before going home.

RNS Quote of the Day, 10/16/07

From a Calguns thread in response to Arnold’s signing of the microstamping bill:

milsurpshooter:

time for REVOLUTION? the chair is against the wall!!!!!

chris:
it sure as hell is!!! john has a long mustache. john has a long mustache!!!!…

Calm down guys. Arnold will be leaving the Governor’s chair and kicking Barbara Boxer out of the Senate soon enough. All of his actions since the 2006 election have been calculated to preserve his attack on Boxer’s seat. So I’m cutting him a lot of slack.
.
And in this case, although I did my part to tie up the Gov’s phone lines in opposition to this bill to no avail, in the end it appears the Dems got pwned anyway.
.
See, the law may provide great soundbites for the press, but if you examine it closely it doesn’t look like AB-1471 can actually be implemented for at least another 15 years due to some really cunning language about patents that was inserted into the bill. Check it out.

Microstamping — Ain’t So Bad

avatar17995_2.gifI’m not frothing at the mouth about Arnold’s signing of the microstamping bill, because — as mentioned in Tuesday’s Quote of the Day post — it appears the Democrats got pwned when somebody inserted some killer language requiring the microstamping technology to be “unencumbered” by patents.

What does this mean? It means the bill may never be implemented — and at worst, it can’t be implemented for 15 years! Gene Hoffman, uber-guru of Calguns, tells it:

The only way for AB-1471 to take effect is for the DOJ BoF [California Dept. of Justice — Bureau of Firearms] to promulgate an enabling regulation through the APA [California’s Administrative Procedure Act] via the OAL [Office of Administrative Laws].

To get through the OAL, the rulemaking must not conflict with the statute. The statute makes it clear that the rulemaking must set rules that allow handgun manufacturers to comply without patent encumbrance. Unless and until that rulemaking is final, new guns can and will be added to the safe list using the pre-existing criteria.

The rulemaking is key and knowing what I do of patent law and business realities, I don’t see BoF being able to implement a compliant rulemaking to implement 1471 until after Lizotte’s patents expire.

—Gene Hoffman [bracketed items mine, not Gene’s.]

The patents expire 15 years from now. So a bill intended to take effect in 2010 won’t be able to be implemented until 2023! That’s a legislative maneuver worthy of Robert Moses in his prime!

Who snuck that language in? According to Gene in post #43 of this thread, the language was inserted “by a TLA [three-letter acronym] we all know and love (or hate if we can’t read between the lines).” NRA? ILA? GOA? GOC? I assume that the behind-the-scenes heroes who snuck that in must retain their anonymity in order to remain effective in California politics. Nevertheless, I’ll salute them, whoever they are! (I suspect I might already be a Life Member of that organization, but perhaps I’ll never know for sure.)
.

UPDATE: I’m now pretty sure Gene meant the language was accidentally  inserted by a three-letter organization like, say the BoF– certainly capable of shooting themselves in the foot with bad bill drafting — in which case, I’ll just give them a big ol’ cheery middle finger!
.
And Arnie did throw us a bone by signing the Katrina-inspired AB-1645 preventing gun confiscations by the State in an emergency. So all in all, I’ll head to the sunny range this week still whistling a happy tune.

Samizdata’s Paul Marks on the most recent Republican “debate”

I am uncertain as to what Governor Mitt Romney said as I was distracted by the big neon sign saying “this man is dishonest slime” that I see over his head whenever he starts speaking. This may well be unfair to Governor Romney, who may be a very nice man in private life, but it is the impression I have of his public performances.

Paul Marks – Samizdata

Its funny cause its true.

Sealegs must die!

I’ve been back, but walking has been a major PITA. As such, I’ve not made it down the hall to the RNS Blogstation until now.

But now that I’m refreshed, let me tell you about last week. Sadly, I was so relaxed that carrying a small digital camera around was waaaay too much work and I have very few pics of this year’s jaunt. Luckily, I had two other people with cameras attached, so there will be pictures. For pics of last year’s trip (which was just like this year’s trip except with better company) you can go here. They are much better and more plentiful. My offer of emailing them to folks who want them still stands as well, since I feel that I’ve cheated y’all this time around.

But before I get going, let’s everyone give a big round of applause for David. The guy was busting his ass for a couple of weeks to get everything written so as to make posting while I was away as painless as possible with his every busy schedule. While I was supposed to be dowloading pics off three cameras upon my arrival home, I logged in and saw the quantity off ass he kicked. A big thanks to him from me and mine.

And in keeping in the line of his “Landscape of the Day” posts, here is the calming first sight I awoke to Tuesday morning.

After that came breakfast.

At least the first helping.

Of course, you have to walk all those calories off. Good thing that this is quiet time around the pool area.

Instead of visiting Prince Rupert, BC as we did last year, we got off the big boat in Victoria.

Where The Wife and The Mom and the Mother-in-Law all went to The Empress Hotel for High Tea

100_0243.JPG

All in all, spending four nights and five days away from any worry other than “Am I too full?” did me a world of good. While I was able to fulfill my promise of leaving my opinionated ass at Customs, some jackasses were not. I had bought my Remington baseball hat to wear, as it seemed normal for me to do so.

Unfortunately there are gun bigots upon the high seas, and they made sure to let me know they did not approve of my headgear. As I walked away laughing, I’m sure they thought I was insane. I just couldn’t help it. This was the best mood I’d been in for a while and no Gun Fearing Wussie was going to ruin it.

I should, however, had better than to wear the thing off the boat in Victoria. Tall guys stand out in a crowd as it is, but send one to a foreign country wearing a had that has “America’s Oldest Gunmaker’ stitched into the back of his hat, and he’s gonna get some strange looks.

Just thought I’d let you know who The Ugly American was last week.

I am also absolutely positive that Russell would have thoroughly enjoyed going, but that was not allowed by the cruise line, so he had to settle for being very happy when dad got home.

I’ll be gone the last couple days of this week as well as the weekend and Monday in Spokane, looking up possible employment and housing. So let me burn through this week and get right back to vacation.

Christmas in November

Mark your calendars, ladies and gents!

November 16th is the Grand Opening of the newest Cabelas in the US of A, Lacey, Washington.

An estimated 15,000 shoppers are expected to stream through the doors of Cabela’s when the outdoor-gear store opens for a 13-hour business day at 8 a.m. Nov. 16.

Officials of the Nebraska-based chain of stores expect the event to be as much a tourist happening as a routine store opening.“Our research shows that we have a fairly substantial existing customer base not only in the immediate Lacey area, but within and well outside a 100-mile radius,” Cabela’s spokesman John Castillo said last week. “There is quite a pent-up demand for this store to open.”

Here is a the current aerial shot of the store

And just one quick shot of the inside was available at the attched link

Cabelas2.jpg

I’ll be in Spokane this weekend, where there is another Cabelas just across the WA/ID border in Post Falls, ID. I may try to swing in there, if there’s time.

As for the Lacey store, while I won’t be able to grand opening day, I should be able to do one of the weekend days and be back here with pics on the following Monday.

Only in Texas

OK, maybe not ONLY in Texas, but I know that a story such as this would never make the news here in my neck of the woods.

Good story, though the fact that the reporter felt the need to ask deputies if Mr. Brooks was within his rights to do what he did, shows just how far down we’ve slipped as a society.

That it would even cross the mind of someone is a shame in and of itself.

For otherwise they may all be dead tomorrow after being disarmed and dealing with policing like this

A grandmother who was shot at by youths in her local park was told by police that she should walk her dog somewhere else in future, she claimed yesterday.

Retired vicar’s wife Ann Laycock had been exercising her Cavalier King Charles spaniel, Suzi, near a group of children – one as young as seven – when one pointed what appeared to be a handgun at her and pulled the trigger.

…

“I was scared to death but I just wanted to get away, so I didn’t say anything and just carried on.”

Once clear, Mrs Laycock rang 999 and was put through to a woman sergeant, who she claims said: “Wouldn’t you be better going to Hartshead School and walking your dog up there?”

“That’s nearly a mile away, and anyway, I like coming to St George’s,” said Mrs Laycock. “Suzi always enjoys it, and I know a lot of the people who walk their dogs there, so we always stop for a chat.”

Shaking and tearful, and with no sign of an officer being dispatched, Mrs Laycock returned home.

Having still heard nothing the next day, she tried to ring her local police station but gave up after trying to get through for nearly an hour.

It was only the following day that an officer came to see her, saying an unmarked car had been sent after her call and four youths had been spoken to but no weapon had been found.

Treating a shots fired call like the Seattle Police treat a car prowl. How much lower can they sink? (link found at Jerry’s)
To answer that question, I give you this article

Eight-year-old Samuel England was left in tears after a police officer ordered that his toy gun should be broken in front of him.

The youngsters was playing with the plastic toy outside his house in Pinehurst on Wednesday when the police officer pulled him up.

…

The family says the officer called at the family’s home and said it was an offence for Samuel to play with an imitation firearm in a public place.

Samuel’s mother’s partner John Standen, 34, was told to destroy the gun or face the boy being taken to the police station.

“The officer told me if I didn’t break it Samuel would be arrested,” he said.

…

Five minutes after the police officer had witnessed the destruction of the gun, he returned to complain about Sophie’s Barbie car.

The six-year-old was traveling on the pavement in the battery-powered car at three miles an hour and the officer said it is only allowed in the garden.

The stick up this cop’s ass had a stick up its ass. Seriously, if you can’t deal with getting up on the wrong side of the bed in the morning, a career in Law Enforcement may not be for you.

Name that party

Ready! Set! Go!!!

Tucked away on Seattle’s Portage Bay, a sleek, 85-foot speedboat sat idle for years — save for an annual jaunt to maintain its engine.

The Navy paid $4.5 million to build the boat. But months before the hull ever touched water, the Navy gave the boat to the University of Washington. The school never found a use for it, either.

Why would the Navy waste taxpayer dollars on a boat that nobody wanted?

Blame it on Sen. Patty Murray and Congressmen Norm Dicks and Brian Baird. All three exercised their political muscle to slip language into a 2002 spending bill to force the Navy to buy the boat from Edmonds shipbuilder Guardian Marine International.

Year after year, the Washington lawmakers did favors for the tiny company, inserting four “earmarks” into different bills to force the Navy and Coast Guard to buy boats they didn’t ask for — $17.65 million in all. None of the boats was used as Congress intended.

The congressional trio say they were helping Guardian Marine because it had a great product. But each has also received generous campaign donations from the company’s three executives, its sole employees: $14,277 to Baird, $15,000 to Murray, and $16,750 to Dicks.

Who out there can “Name That Party!”?

Talk about “No Bid Contracts”.

While I was away

I understand that AlGore won some sort of worthless endowment from the Nobel folks?

Ahh, well, this will not do. We can’t legitimize people who believe that that the extinction of the human race is reasonable.

Especially since their “scientific consensus” has been proven to be bullshit, their “truth” proven to be bias, and their “discoveries” proven to be dangerous.
