The Soundboard: The Group Dynamic

Welcome to the latest installment series of The Soundboard. We’re gonna switch it up just a bit from The Pound of Sound and jump right into what might otherwise be called ‘Bands I’ve Seen Live’, though to be honest, I’m not remembering all aspects of all the shows, so let us not get too specific. The parties were hearty and if I could remember everything, I most likely didn’t have that good of a time.

We’re gonna start today with a band whose shows I made sure to attend whenever they hit town. Almost always moderately sized clubs. Always a good time.

The Afghan Whigs

Admittedly, The Whigs are an acquired taste that is just too bitter for some. I however, have a minor obsessive/compulsive disorder with their discography, or at least part of it.

I cannot listen to one song. Hell, I can’t listen to one album. I absolutely must hear Gentlemen, Black Love and 1965 in order and in their entirety whenever I either hear one of their tracks on the radio or get the itch to spin a disc.

The result if I fail to do so is that I have these albums, in order, in their entirety going through my head until the need is taken care of.

I’d say that “It sucks to be me”, except for that these guys rock. With sleaze-meister, Greg Dulli, doing the vox and what I like to call The Rhythm Section from the Second Circle of Hell* providing the melody, there is just no end to how much these guys kick my ass when I fire them up.

But enough about me, let’s get to the tunage.

We’ll be starting out with their 1993 release, Gentlemen

A friend of mine who didn’t quite get The Whigs once said that they were the perfect band for those who can’t sing to sing along to. While probably accurate in that Dulli is not a crooner, you nevertheless fully understand that he means every word.

What Jail Is Like

This next track is the only Whigs tune in which Dulli does not sing. Instead, Marcy Mays from the Cleveland indie band, Scrawl, fills in and does an amazing job telling us about a relationship between two people who deserve each other, like no couple ever have. Not for the easily disturbed.

My Curse

Enjoy.

Night Sentry Companion

You all may remember, from my posts a while back about House Guns, that I mentioned our household has the Night Sentry in our bed, providing a nice, consistent spot for handgun and flashlight.

Well, Ace pointed out this new product, the Back-Up, that looks like an excellent companion — for your shotgun.

UPDATE: Well, well, great minds think alike! Phil has the actual video ad up here.

Personal Defense TV

I’ve been enjoying Guns & Ammo’s TV series this year. Guns & Ammo TV in particular underwent a much-needed revamp of their opening sequence and have really changed the pace of the show, with more short subjects and much faster transitions between them. No longer do you have to wait five minutes listening to James & Boddington droning on about what’s on the show this week — now they get it done fast and jump right into the first subject.

Personal Defense TV.jpgGuns & Ammo’s Personal Defense TV, on the other hand, didn’t need to change anything — it’s still great advice, fascinating peeks into various defensive training schools, and lots of food for thought.

Ayoob.jpgI especially enjoy Massad Ayoob’s “Action Plan” segment about halfway through each show. Love him or hate him, he always has plenty of ideas for specific protection tactics you can use in your daily life.Pocket Organizer.jpg

As a kid, I remember watching my Dad use one of those little wooden organizers to sort his pocket change, keys, pocketknife, and other accoutrements after coming home from work, and anticipating the day when I’d be enough of an adult to need to use one myself. Then in the early ’90s I read Ayoob’s book The Truth About Self-Protection and dumped the whole idea.

In the book, Ayoob advocates keeping the clothes you wore that day (or at least your pants) next to the bed at night, with your keys, etc. in the pockets just as they were during the day. That way, in any kind of real or suspected emergency, it’s a matter of seconds to pull on your clothes and know where everything is — no fumbling about in the dark. Plenty of time in the morning to sort your pocket lint and other stuff into a fresh pair of pants for the new day.

Hotel.jpgIt’s good advice, and I’ve been following it for many years now. But Ayoob had a new wrinkle this week in his Personal Defense TV segment on personal protection while staying in a hotel — which could obviously be used at home as well.

If you have a firearm and flashlight with you in your hotel room, where you won’t have something like the Night Sentry, the natural spot to put them is in the bedside drawer. But there’s still an element of fumbling around if you need to get them in darkness.Shoes.jpg

Instead, Ayoob sets his shoes next to the bed, facing outward as though you were going to step into them after sitting up on the bed — and puts the gun and flashlight in the shoes.

This is a really elegant solution. Hardly any fumbling involved — shoes are easy to distinguish from the floor, after all — and gun and flashlight can be positioned so they’re easily grasped, too.

Ayoob 357.gifJust the thing for a nighttime encounter. Still going strong with good practical advice after all these years — thanks, Massad!

Local Humor

So, back in May, long time King County Prosecutor, Norm Maleng passed away. A sad occasion for all involved, mostly because of the guy’s tenure in the position, but he was most likely a genuinely nice fellow. I don’t know, I never met the man.

So now were in the run-up to the election to find his replacement.

It’s been whittled down to a pair of guys, one (D) and one (R), with the (R) being Maleng’s former Assistant Prosecutor. I don’t care, I don’t live in the county any more.

But one of the guys, the Democratic candidate, says in this Times article, that Robert Kennedy was his “political hero”.

Now, take into account what he said. Then add in that the guy is running for the top Prosecutor spot in King County, Washington.

Still don’t get the laugh. OK then, add in the fact that very recently King County changed their namesake from former Vice President under President Franklin Pierce, William Rufus Devane King, to the Reverend Martin Luther King, JR.

Still don’t see teh funny? OK then, do you remember it coming out not so long ago that RFK was the guy who authorized the wiretapping of MLK’s phones for J. Edgar Hoover?

Got it. Excellent. My ribs are still hurting.

Tax Cuts For The Rich?

Not so much, really.

income+tax+rates.jpg

Click on that pic to make it readable and be amazed and astounded!

Show it to your friends, who will be mystified and befuddled!

Show it to your “Tax the Rich” political opposites and have them call it a big fat right-wing lie.

Then, send them here to read about how their political minders have actually been the ones lying to them.

Shipping Container Shelters — in Style!

Pretty cool roundup of posts and websites devoted to converting the ubiquitous shipping container into low-cost shelters, apartments and/or houses, including videos from Bob Vila! The student housing links showcase some very well-executed examples of container architecture.
I like the Australian rainforest shelter myself. Hey, it survived a Class 5 typhoon!

ARFCom Zombie Apocalypse

This is indeed some funny, funny stuff.

h/t: Larry Correia, whose Diary of a Gear Whore is nose-snorting fun as well. Don’t read it if you’re a Desert Eagle fan.

I found out about Larry Correia thanks to this post by Firehand.  A tip o’ the hat to you, sir.

RNS Quote of the Day, 10/17/07

From Dad’s Garage:

This afternoon, after grinding away at some code for several hours, I thought to myself, “I need to get out of this chair. If anybody comes looking for me, I’m not going to be found here.” I grabbed a cigar, and as I was locking my PC, noticed the time: Four minutes past four. And started laughing that I might cause a “404: Not Found” error.

This is original material, folks. You’ll really have to search hard to find jokes this bad.

She didn’t just say that? Did she?

I mean, if she did, she just called all black people felons.

An African-American Chicago Police officer contends that a rule barring cops from associating with criminals discriminates against black officers.

The officer argues the rule is more restrictive on black officers because of the disproportionate number of African Americans who have had contact with the criminal justice system.

Last month, a supervisor warned Officer Sylvia Broadway she might have violated department rules — asking if she knew that a man driving her car was a convicted felon.

Broadway, a 13-year veteran in the Wentworth District, said she was unaware the man was a felon until she asked him later.

The department is enforcing a “policy that appears to have bias overtones against a specific racial group, namely African Americans,” she said to the supervisor in a memo. “It is as though a deliberate trap has been set for African-American police officers.”

Sorry whiny cop bitch, the bias is against FELONS. If you can’t see the difference between a black person and a felon, then maybe you’re in the wrong profession.

Of course, being black, she gets away with this accusation like no one outside of her race could. The rule keeping cops and felons separated except, of course, when the officer is officially on duty, works against all races equally. It was there before the incarceration of large numbers of black folks and will be there after the problem eventually subsides. Notice how I am optimistic where she is not.
If she doesn’t like this rule, she has the option of choosing her felon friends over her job.

It’ll be interesting to see which option survives the cut.
