RNS Quote of the Day: 10/21/07

From the Reagan Diaries:

Sunday, September 6 [1981]

I know we should have gone to church & yet I’m concerned about the elaborate security measures which have me arriving in a siren screaming motorcade. I don’t know what the answer will be but one must be found.

Spent the day at my desk….

Saturday Gun Porn: Weatherby CFP

00000029.JPGThis is one of a special run of single-shot CFPs done for Lock, Stock and Barrel, a famous midwestern gun dealer.

It’s in .223 Remington with a 15″ stainless fluted #1-contour barrel with recessed target crown, wears a Harris bipod and a Barska 6.5-20×50 scope, and was smacking targets at distances past a quarter-mile at Boomershoot this year.

I had a gunsmith replace the sling swivel stud on the bottom of the grip with a Pachmayr version that doesn’t protrude.

Yep, it’s a Weatherby! The action and stock are similar to its big brother in .257 Weatherby.

School Bus Watch

In this recent post I griped that there wasn’t some sort of government-sponsored program to provide training to bus drivers and/or alert them about the rumored terrorist plot to hijack a bunch of school buses in the U.S. and cause mass casualties.

Well, I was wrong! Thanks to the article “Highway Watch: Truckers Standing Guard” by M. Pietrantoni in the current issue of the excellent ModernSurvival.net online magazine, Highway Watch.jpgI’ve learned that there is a program with enhanced screening, training and alerts in place for truckers, with a similar program for bus drivers That program is called Highway Watch. (The program for school bus drivers is, of course, School Bus Watch.) Sorry, you have to be a subscriber to read the article, but I’ve posted excerpts below….

RNS Landscape of the Day: Spirit Lake, ID

Here’s a link to an aerial tour of some cool-lookin’ parts of Idaho close to Spokane, where Phil’s lurkin’ about this weekend.

Lots more fascinating aerial and other photography from this photographer here, including more great Idaho stuff.

Spirit Lake by Sondahl.JPG

My daughter and boyfriend were just visiting Spirit Lake not long ago.

As the functional equivalent of (cough) hippies (cough), they don’t pay much attention to things like the news or radio broadcasts in general. On their way home I get a call as they’re passing through the Montana wildfires, asking why the sky is black and there are flames all around.

Aren’t your kids supposed to stop giving you gray hairs at a certain age?

RNS Quote of the Day, 10/20/07

From the Reagan Diaries:

Friday, September 4 [1981]

…Not a big day. Met with Al Haig — the world is still exploding. The French Ambass. to Beirut was gunned down by terrorists doing the Syrians’ work.

Met with Jim Watt. He’s taking a lot of abuse from environmental extremists but he’s absolutely right. People are ecology too and they can’t forage for food and live in caves.

Saw a film on Begin, a kind of character study. He’ll be here Wed.

Had a pleasant evening with a stack of horse and western magazines.

IM IN UR CITTY DIGGIN UP UR SKANDALS

Two Los Angeles Times reporters somehow — somehow — manage to scoop the New York Times in uncovering a bunch of suspicious donations to Hillary! from dishwashers and busboys in the NYT’s own backyard — New York’s Chinatown. Many of the alleged contributors seemingly can’t be located….

Of course you know the NYT had its folks working hard on this story too. [roll eyes]

Friday Gun Porn: Southpaw Boomsticks

I can’t call them “lefty rifles,” that’d be a contradiction in terms….

00000041.JPG00000040.JPG

From top / from left:

Weatherby Mark V .257 Weatherby Magnum

Weatherby Mark V .300 Weatherby Magnum

Sako 591 .308 Winchester

Savage 93R17-GLV .17 HMR

Savage Mark II-GL .22 LR

The first three rifles wear Burris Signature scopes; the Savages have the Barska 6.5-20×50, which is a fantastic value at Sportsmans Guide. I was really pleased with this scope at this year’s Boomershoot.00000044.JPG

00000043.JPGI haven’t shot the Savages yet (at left). They’re also a great value after Savage finally added the Accutrigger (right) to their left-handed rimfires this summer. Hopefully I’ll have a range report this weekend….

Yorktown.jpg

“October 19th was a fine day — a wonderful day. Or at least it was for the rebel colonists.”

–David of RNS at 12 years old, reading the first words of my winning essay on Cornwallis for the Daughters of the American Revolution into the broadcast mic at one of my hometown radio stations.

Image is the print The Surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, A.D. 1781.

And I’m Off. Again.

By the time you read this, I’ll be well on my way east to the beautiful City of Spokane for 3 days of fun and (maybe) sun with the wife and her family members.

I’ll also be shopping up some job prospects this afternoon before everyone else arrives.

I’ve got The Soundboard below this post and that’ll be all from me until next Tuesday. If these last two week are any indication, I think you all will be in good hands with David.

Btw, since it doesn’t look like I’ll be getting my Dillon Mini-Gun for Christmas, I’ll settle for one of these
