Different Light

250px-Andreas_Achenbach_004.jpg

The duToits have been traveling in Germany, and the Mrs. has an excellent observation on the quality of light — it’s different there than here:

…you find yourself here, with the sun creating a light so different from home, and getting used to it as normal.

The grasses, valleys, and forests are different shades of green and brown that look different because of the different angle of the sun. You might match the color on a swatch exactly, but when you took it home, it would just be different, and look wrong somehow.

Oft times I will take in the whole of the place, with the grayness taking on a sense of vitality, rather than the dreariness associated with the climate elsewhere, and wonder how I got myself inserted into a 18th century German oil painting. The sky and clouds ARE unmistakeably German. The realization in that, and how accurately it has been captured in paintings, also forces you to realize that it wasn’t grayness or dreariness they captured so mastefully, but the energy and thrill of the place.

…[A]ll those images in your head, all the artwork stored in the outer limits of your brain, under the category “dreary-looking German Rhinescapes,” have to be recategorized. You see them differently–with the light the artist saw when he painted them.

I’ve been to Paris twice now, and both times was struck by how the sky — particularly the clouds — seemed very different than clouds in the Western United States. Hell, they looked like the clouds you see in paintings of France.

RTWT, it’s good.

RNS Quote of the Day: 12/06/07

From the Reagan Diaries:

Tuesday, October 6 [1981]

Most of the days event [sic] cancelled. Awakened at 7:25 by a phone call from Al Haig with news that Anwar Sadat had been shot along with many others. All morning we waited for news — receiving word only that he was not fatally wounded & was in surgery. Then came the word he was dead.

It’s hard to describe the shock & the sorrow we both felt. Even though their visit was short we discovered we had a deep feeling of friendship for them. Maybe it has to do with a state visit. You start out with knowledge of each other & immediately get into the problems you want to solve.

Anyway, we both feel a great sense of loss. He was truly a great man, a kind man with warmth and humor.

I’m trying not to feel hatred for those who did this foul deed but I can’t make it. Qadhafi gloating on TV, his people jubilantly celebrating in the streets. He is beneath contempt.

He goes on radio (clandestine) and begins broadcasting propaganda, calling for a holy war, etc., before Sadat’s death was confirmed. This material had to have been already prepared. In other words, he knew it was going to happen.

I Do

So very much love the state of denial that the leftosphere is currently in with respect to the NIE that came out yesterday.

They love to tout the “Iran stopped assembling their bomb in 2003” and then neglect to mention WHEN in 2003 they stopped (hint, hint: March/April).

They also seem to have moved the goalposts a very great distance from “Iran isn’t building a nuke” to the current “Iran isn’t building one anymore”.

Kevin Drum, whom I’ve singled out in the past because of his decision to wait until the rapidly approaching train of SSI gets right up on us to do anything about keeping it supplied with funding and for his love for the Global Warming Death Cult, was actually the sanest and fairest of the bunch in the leftosphere with his willingness to link to an even saner leftoid at The Headline Junky who wrote the following

It’s important not to overlook, though, the fact that Iran’s entire nuclear program is the result of a decades-long clandestine procurement effort that was in direct violation of their legal obligations under the NPT, that at no time since the program was revealed has Iran ever been in full compliance with its obligations under the NPT, and that they have repeatedly backtracked on promised concessions both to the IAEA and EU. It’s also worth noting that while Iran has recently been more transparent with regards to its declared nuclear activity, the one area where they still have been obstructive is in giving the IAEA more intrusive access to its program sites in order to verify that no un-declared activity is taking place.

The fella then follows up with how saber-rattling the Bush Administration has been, but if he were to look at what made Iran stash their nuke program under the sink, as it were, then he would see that bellicosity works well with Iran.

But most certainly DO NOT tell any of this to Kevin’s readers. You want to see a shitstorm of stupidity and all out hatred, click this link and read the comments. You know what, I had a President come on TV and lie to my face after he signed legislation that made way for the putting of excellent condition M14’s and M21’s to the torch and bandsaw, and I did not hate the man as much as the deranged individuals in Drum’s comments section hate Bush.

We’re going to have to talk about that. Next Monday. Start thinking on it because I’ve got questions for you all.

Wow, that was close

There almost wasn’t a story here. Good thing ABC blogger Martha Raddatz was nearby.

A suicide bomber in Kabul, Afghanistan Tuesday struck near Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who is in Afghanistan for talks with President Hamid Karzai and other officials.

Really, was he hurt?

The suicide bomb went off on the same airport road Gates was on, within 20 minutes of Secretary Gates’ convoy, a U.S. official tells ABC News.

Oh. I guess that Seattle is “Near” Portland to Martha when bad news is good news.

And speaking of the news, it appears that good news is no news.

Sometimes the jokes write themselves

Katherine Heigl tells Vanity Fair that her character in the hit movie “Knocked Up” was a built into a sexist stereotype of a “humorless and uptight shrew” of a woman.

Also from the Vanity Fair article

In her own life Heigl is an assertive, impatient go-getter who quickly tired of waiting for her boyfriend [singer-songwriter Josh Kelley] to propose and demanded to know what his intentions were. She even went and picked out the diamond for her ring.

Run, Josh. Run quickly now.

Or maybe a joke with more “international flavor” might be better

The BBC funded a paintballing trip for men later accused of Islamic terrorism and failed to pass on information about the 21/7 bombers to police, a court was told yesterday.

Mohammed Hamid, who is charged with overseeing a two-year radicalisation programme to prepare London-based Muslim youths for jihad, was described as a “cockney comic” by a BBC producer.

The BBC paid for Mr Hamid and fellow defendants Muhammad al-Figari and Mousa Brown to go on a paintballing trip at the Delta Force centre in Tonbridge, Kent, in February 2005. The men, accused of terrorism training, were filmed for a BBC programme called Don’t Panic, I’m Islamic, screened in June 2005.

The BBC paid Mr Hamid, an Islamic preacher who denies recruiting and grooming the men behind the failed July 2005 attack, a £300 fee to take part in the programme, Woolwich Crown Court was told.

Yet another case of too much taxpayer money and political correctness for their own good..

Who’d a thunk it?

I mean, who would have thought that a massive government program would be paying over twice the average cost paid for by people in the private sector, on something as necessary as oxygen?

Only you, me and anyone who understands how markets work.

Millions of people with respiratory diseases have relied on oxygen equipment, delivered to their homes, to help them breathe. A basic setup, including three years of deliveries of small oxygen tanks, can be bought from pharmacies and other retailers for as little as $3,500, or about $100 a month.

Unless, that is, the buyer is Medicare, the government health care program for older Americans.

Despite enormous buying power, Medicare pays far more. Rather than buy oxygen equipment outright, Medicare rents it for 36 months before patients take ownership, and pays for a variety of services that critics say are often unnecessary.

The total cost to taxpayers and patients is as much as $8,280, or more than double what somebody might spend at a drugstore.

The high expense of oxygen equipment — which cost Medicare over $1.8 billion last year — is hardly an anomaly.

The article goes on to tell us just how the suppliers of medical equipment keep these costs where they are,

“These industries rely on a basic threat: If you mess with us, we can turn the seniors against you,” said former Senator Alan K. Simpson, Republican of Wyoming, who tried cutting Medicare payments while he was in Congress. “Angering seniors is the quickest route to political suicide.”

Many of those battles focus on the $427 billion Medicare program. Because of fierce patient and corporate lobbying, for instance, Medicare still pays prices for many items that are based on rates established in the early 1980s, when devices were often much more expensive than they are now.

And even with all of the overspending and possibility for “political suicide”, the entirety of the Democrat Party is onboard with extending this fiasco to every person in America (and notice I didn’t just specify “citizens”).

Because they care.

About what, I haven’t quite nailed down yet.

Never Stop Looking

breasts.jpgAccording to this (ahem) scientific study, looking at women’s breasts prolongs men’s lives.

Looking at the breasts of well-endowed women prolongs ’em even more:

“There’s no question: Gazing at large breasts makes men healthier. Our study indicates that engaging in this activity a few minutes daily cuts the risk of stroke and heart attack in half,” said [Dr. Karen] Weatherby, who even recommended that men aged over 40 should spend at least 10 minutes daily admiring breasts sized “D-cup” or larger.

She said that this was as healthy as going to the gym for 30 minutes daily and prolonged a man’s life by five years.

Hey, the scientist is named Weatherby, so that’s extra points in my book.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a scientific study that was published in two journals at the same time, though. The New England Journal of Medicine sounds like a reputable outfit, but I don’t know about the other one….

Good Legislating

We all know what bad legislating is. I posted on that over the weekend (for all you non-stopping by RNS on the weekend types, hit that link and be offended).

On the other hand, we Washingtonians had some good legislating in the second half of last week.

It all started a few weeks back when the Washington State Supreme Court decided that Washington Voters were too stupid to know that when we voted (a 58% majority) in favor of a one-percent cap on property taxes, that we knew we were voting in favor of a one-percent cap on property taxes, and they struck the law down.

This led to a hue and cry amongst the unwashed such as myself (no postings because I was on vacation at the time). After a couple weeks of this our (Barely) Governor Gregiore remembered it was an election year and that the guy she had to use King County to beat in 2004, Dino Rossi, was going to challenge her for the seat again.

Also, her fellow Dems have been enjoying a rather wide majority in both houses of the legislature these past couple years and they wanted to do everything they could to keep it. What with receiving phone calls at all hours of the day and night to reinstate the cap, they were begging for a solution.
She quickly called for a special session of the legislature to write and pass a piece of legislation that would reinstate the 1% cap.

And verily, it was law again. With a vote of 39 yeas to 9 nays. Total time in session: 12 hours.

Voting against reinstating the cap was one of RNS’s favorite liberals, Senator Adam Kline. I’m sure you all remember Senator Kline from when he attempted to ban ATV’s even though there is no where in his very urban district that anyone can legally ride an ATV. He is also one of the leading sponsors of the failed bill to mandate gun show sales through FFL’s only. Fellow gun show hater, Jeanne Kohl-Welles, also voted against the cap.

All in all, not a bad round of legislatin’. Now if only they take that 12 hour time frame and institute it for every session in the future, I might be able to stand those bastiges.

You Make the Call

Is Tom Tancredo fakin’ the funk?

When Tancredo hired a construction crew to transform his drab basement into a high-tech pleasure den in October 2001, however, he did not express concern that only two of its members spoke English. Nor did he bother to check the workers’ documentation to see if they were legal residents of the United States. Had Tancredo done so, he would have learned that most of the crew consisted of undocumented immigrants, or “criminal aliens” as he likes to call them. Instead, Tancredo paid the crew $60,000 for its labor and waited innocently for the completion of his elaborate entertainment complex.

My take: He’s not the racist that all the pro-illegal immigration assholes say he is. He was giving the workers the benefit of the doubt and not “profiling”.

I mean, it’s still funny.

First

It was “Abort the Kids”.

Now it is “Torture the Kids”.

Want to “Go Green”? Stay Married!

Environmentalists who are thinking of getting a divorce may want to reconsider, a new study at Michigan State University finds.

Households in which a divorce occurs have a greater negative impact on the environment in terms of efficient use of resources than the households of married couples, according to research that will be published this week by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The reason is simple — it’s all about efficiency, says Jianguo Liu, lead author of the study who has the Rachel Carson chair in ecological sustainability at the university’s department of fisheries and wildlife.

“In the divorced households, the number of people is smaller than in married households,” Liu told ABCNEWS.com. “The resource efficiency used per person is much lower than in married households.”

So separate bedrooms for mom and dad, along with possible extra-maritals, while it may just fuck the mind of the child completely up, is better for the environment?

Great. Like kids today aren’t screwed up enough already. Though I’m sure they’ll make a drug to counteract it.
