This bill (SB6853) was introduced into Washington Senate yesterday. A “public” hearing was also held in the Ways & Means Committee.

Please read the bill and give your opinion as to what exactly it does to the tax code in the comments.

If you can’t definitvely say what the bill does, you’re not alone. Even the folks whose names are on it aren’t saying.

My state senator, Debbie Regala, has her name on the sponsor’s line. That should frighten you. I’ve not seen one bill in the past six years with her name on it that was good for the citizenry.

I did read the bill. Seems it will do whatever the ways & means committee wants it to do. From what I can tell, the bill doesn’t exist yet except that ominous phrase “reviewing tax preferences”.

Did they actually discuss it in committee yest? or did it get pushed?

I don’t know what they did with it. I also don’t really care. Sponsoring a bill like this should trigger an automatic recall election for those whose name is on it.

It’s a shell, meant for Gut & Stuff. G&S is the dirty, but legal practice of taking an enrolled-but-languishing Bill after the deadline for filing Bills is past, then “gutting out” the language in the Bill, and “stuffing” it full of new language.

I don’t know when the SCOTUS ever decided that G&S was legal, and whether that extended to the States, or whether the States decided it on their own. G&S is NOT a responsible tactic of representative government.
