Long Range Specialty Pistol Ram

One of my Specialty Pistols mentors, Steve Hugel, got himself a very nice ram. He’s an excellent writer, and the full story is worth the read, especially because of his “tactical” use of the ballistic reticle in the field. It’s not guesstimation if you make it precise. I’ve seen Steve make the reticle stadia calculations in his head, but using Exbal as he discusses makes it simpler for mere mortals.

If that all seems fantastic to you, it isn’t. I’ve seen that kind of shooting with my own eyes at Boomershoot, where, in fact, if you can’t shoot that well, nothing will go “BOOM” for you. You’ve got lots of practice time and good instructors, though.

OK, horse-pistoleers, does this get me into your long-range “handgun” club (not that I can afford such a toy)?

Well, yeah. The shortest range at Boomershoot is well over 300 yards, and he shot the ram at about that distance. But a big part of the fun with specialty pistols is that it’s a bit tougher than with a rifle.

And it’s certainly no club (which implies exclusivity); we’re just a bunch of merry fanatics who love showing folks just how much more fun it can be to do long range with a pistol.

It’s kinda like I experienced at SHOT with respect to California gun laws: I can tell dealers until I’m blue in the face that AKs (with the proper accessories) are perfectly legal in Cali now (and have been for five years or so) but they still won’t believe me. Same thing with specialty pistols: I keep running into folks who will tell me straight out “you can’t do that” with a specialty pistol. Publicizing what can be done with ’em is still a useful activity.

And as for affordability, one of the drums I’ve been beating is how easy it is to get minute-of-boomer accuracy from an inexpensive Thompson/Center Contender or Encore pistol.

If you’ve got any interest, you’re always welcome to wander down to the RNS tent and try out some of mine; that’s why I bring ’em, to introduce new folks to the discipline (and maybe get ’em hooked). 😉
