John Moses Browning High School

The City of Chicago Public School system is wanting to open a “homosexual-friendly” high school (whatever the fuck that is).

The proposed name is: Social Justice High School – Pride Campus

I have never heard a single modern-day story about a school that wasn’t “homosexual-friendly”. Some students may have been bigots, but the entire school or even just the school staff; Never.

If GLBT children are going to get their own school, then shouldn’t children from firearm owning/enthusiasts families get one too?

Oh wait, GLBT are harassed by private citizens. Gun owners are harassed by the government.

I’m about tired of these creeps whining about “persecution”. They haven’t the foggiest idea of what it is to be run around in circles and then jailed by people who take your tax dollars and feed their families with them.

The motto of the CPS is “Children First”. That is obviously a lie.

It should instead read “Agenda First”. There is nothing about children in this plan.

Maybe the name of the school should be Butt Fuck U.

Now, now. That wouldn’t be “inclusive”.

How about the “Tongue in Groove Education Multiplex”?

So much for integration, it’s back to ‘seperate but equal’. Yay for de-evolution!

“Social Justice High School- Pride Campus”? I think Orwell just did a back flip in his grave.

Unless there’s been a vast and mighty change in the twenty-some years since I got clear of the public school system, GLBT youth get a bonus round of “anti-fun” during their high school years – whether the closeted ones or the ones either foolish enough to come out in that environment or as a local comic puts it, unlucky enough to be born outside the closet with the door locked behind them.

Some verification of the level of un-amusement available may be found in data from the CDC indicating a substantially (2x-3x) higher suicide rate in adolescent gay/bi males (http://www.cdc.gov/lgbthealth/).

Given that a rather minimal goal of an at least moderately ethical educational system likely includes pushing out the same number of coherent/breathing/kicking bodies at the far end as rec’d at the intake end…separating off the “designated targets” and known “vulnerable populations” from the herd, while to my mind a lazy approach to achieving the above goal – is better than simply bemoaning the oddly elevated number of corpses in a specific segment of the population.

And what the hell, I’m all for sending them to John Moses Browning HS…with mandatory classes in armed and unarmed self-defense for all grades, with the quiet and grim goal of hardening the targets. And lest I appear an unwavering advocate of fun’n’protectionism…I also favor mandatory shop, math, latin, foreign language, and english/grammar classes. (spending an hour or so beating the snot outta each other in Martial Arts class each day qualifies as phys ed, yes?) *Evil Pink Pistol Kinda Grin*

After all, the very most eager bully or basher is significantly deterred by a .45jhp placed center of mass; and granted the general ineptitude of that kinda knuckledragger (and based on anecdotal data)they tend to fare badly against even the flamiest queen with 5-10 years of martial arts training behind them…something about a thorough thumping followed up by a fashion critique accompanied by a detailed listing of the attackers physical…shortcomings.

Fine rant, GeeCee, but I don’t find support in your statements for blaming the high suicide rate of queer teens on their high school experience.

I’m going all Freud on you and saying that such an elevated rate is probably due to a restricted sense of self-worth generated by lack of sexual espression.

Does that fit your (pink) pistol?

If not, I’ve got lots of other calibers available. This is an equal-opportunity shooting gallery.

    Rants are a hobby 🙂

In a more depressurized sense, I don’t see either explanation as mutually exclusive…though…now that I think about it…

Without a scientific study, I have mere anecdotal evidence gathered some years after the fact – but even in a semi-rural environment, putting it as delicately as I can, the guys that were interested (i.e., not completely repressed) in such activity were, shall we say, not especially repressed on that front?

I don’t think there’s a one size fits all answer. I do think that living in fear of exposure (and concomitant anticipated rejection by parents, family, community, and friends), guilt, and being surrounded by a near-constant drone of “queer=bad=fair game” to kind of reinforce the warm fuzziness of it all…probably doesn’t help anything.

I return to my original notion – that while segregating off what to my eye looks an awful lot like a vulnerable population into safer environs…is a lazy way out and a half-hearted effort – until a better answer comes along (and somehow I just can’t wrap my head around the notion of telling a bunch of HS kids, of ANY gender or orientation “Go out, get laid, it’s good for you!”), it’s the best (however lazy) answer I’ve heard.

Though, to play devils advocate, things COULD well have changed since back when…I note the appearance of these Gay/Straight Alliance clubs in many high schools (which concept would have caused spontaneous mental meltdown back in the early ’80’s)…but (again) on the other hand, I’ve not heard any news of LGBT youth suicide numbers plunging nationwide…

So, at this point, given the stakes concerned (in general, kids offing themselves being a bad thing), I’ll tend to favor going for the lazy/obvious approach at least until something better comes along…though just to be contrary, I would argue that *any* sort of segregation, even the well-intended sort we discuss…steals from all parties the opportunity to find peaceful ways to co-exist…which is going to be kind of necessary out in the cold cruel world later on…

  8. Phil says:

Having thought upon it further, GC, I’m still against the population being segregated from the gen-pop of students, or even given a special GLBT majority school.

Everyone, and I mean everyone, goes through the system feeling inadequate, unloved, less than zero, etc. whatever you want to call it.

Whether it is because they’re tall, short, fat, ugly, have no coordination, aren’t good at sports, aren’t good at math, science, art, whatever. Even the “popular” kids feel these things, and that is why they are so cruel to those who don’t get into the clique.

GLBT teens have no special burden placed upon them because of the preference of their sexuality. They also have the same solutions given to them as are given to every other students: Take the abuse, go whine to the administration, or kick some ass. All of these choices have consequences, which, as I see it, are: Suicide, Suicide, Bruised knuckles and a wide berth through the hallways.

I went through the local systems as a obviously poor kid with bad hair, and having to start as the “new kid” four times in 12 years. After the first change of district I realized I wanted that wide berth and I have the proverbial “permanent record” to prove it. High school was the worst because I was wearing a lot of black at the time. Two confrontations was all it took for that shit to end. Got my ass handed to me in the first one, came back and mano-e-mano’d the leader of that group to a pulp. Fuck being a victim.

If there was only one thing the GLBT community could do for the youths was to tell them not to take it and break a few noses, that crap would come to an end with a swiftness. Instead they tell them to do just the opposite, prolonging the suffering. They won’t even get consideration until they change their ways.
They get to make one of the most important choices of their lives early on, but just like the rest of those early choices, it will be a life changer and lead them either poorly or well through life.

No way, no how will I ever support some administrator’s plan to use criteria to divide up the children. We did that here in Seattle with the black students and I think we both know how that turned out.

For a moment reading the title I thought there really was JMB HS. Dang.

It makes sense to segregate people in schools based on traditional leftist divisions- what better way to create permanent grievance group loyalty?
