The Morning Light

uh-oh.gif

Professor Booty is on the run again.

You see, they have dorms on the winery property so that the owner can keep an eye on the harvesting staff so as to keep his product line honest. It is all part of the wonderful compensation package the ladies who work the vines receive.

As I mentioned yesterday, shortly after I was recognized the owner had me followed as I was getting my tour. But he made the mistake of sending amateurs after a rather professional gentleman like myself.

And as the morning light came up, you could say I had to ‘hightail’ it on out of there.

But not before getting a souvenir from my tour guide to add to my collection.

Ammo Day in the SF Bay

For this, my first National Ammo Day, at the appointed hour of 1330, I went to Wally World here in the Eastern San Francisco Bay Area. I didn’t see any good firearms-type films that I really wanted to purchase, so I walked up to the ammo counter with the Shotgun News digest issue and a copy of Predator Hunting magazine.

I was pleased and surprised to see that I had to wait in line to make my Winchester white-box ammo purchase!

National Ammo Day Gun Post

NAD2_thumb.jpg

I’ve got my alarm set for noon so that I can head off to Wally World and buy my ammo.

The reasons for all this Wal-Mart talk are right here, btw.

But what I really want to know is if me buying one of these is equal to me buy a minimum of 100 rounds,

The new 120mm M1028 cartridge will be fired from the M1A1/M1A2 Abrams main battle tank M256 smoothbore cannon. Representing the opposite end of the engagement spectrum from armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot rounds designed for long range antitank combat, the M1028 canister round contains approximately 1,100 tungsten balls designed for muzzle action against a vastly different target set. “It’s essentially a large shotgun shell, observed Lt. Col. Ken Tarcza, product manager, Large Caliber Ammunition, in the Office of Project Manager, Maneuver Ammunition System (PM MAS).

I don’t even care that I don’t have an Abrams. I’d figure out something cool to do with a 120mm shotshell. I just know I would.

Found at Murdoc’s

And even though I really don’t need to remind anyone, Gullyborg has this week’s installment of the Carnival of Cordite up with the good, the bad and the very ugly contained within.

In a startling development, Mr. Completely has a new rifle so that he can compete in future Rifle e-Postal Matches with a rifle. There will also be news on the matches p on Monday.

I’m debating on range time with pool cue chalks today or tomorrow. It will depend on how intact I make it out of the madness that is my local Wal-Mart. When you go to a WM in say, Montana, they are clean with wide aisles and not very crowded. Not so the one near where I live. They open at 0700 and after about 0800 the place could double for an old INS office with screaming children and merchandise strewn about. Even just the parking lot is a combat zone.

I swear, how I make it out of there without pistol whipping a half a dozen people, I don’t know.

I Call Bullshit

After the Repubs told the Dems to put up or shut up on the subject of pulling out of Iraq last night, and the subsequent whimper from the Dems, I’m hoping this crap will die off.

Did I mention that I think I hope too much?

In the meantime, there are ethics violations waiting in the wings for our ex-Marine Representative from Pennsylvania, John Murtha. It seems that he may have used his defense appropriations committee position to help firms that were being consulted by his brother get the contracts they wanted.

Not smart, Murtha.

And now the Dems are calling this “The Swiftboating of John Murthaâ€?. They are saying that because he spoke out against Bush, he is now being investigated.

Excuse me, I thought that after what the Dems said about Rove, Cheney and Libby and the brouhaha over DeLay, that the Dems were all about making sure everyone in DC was squeaky clean?

But apparently not. They want their new star to be left alone in his possible criminal dealings and Karl Rove to get the death penalty.

If the hypocrisy wasn’t so think, I would have even mentioned it.

Police Search for Gary Glitter in Vietnam

Authorities said Thursday they are searching for former British rock star Gary Glitter over his alleged relationship with a Vietnamese teenager.

My first thought was “How the hell do you lose Gary Glitter in Vietnam?”

Vino

birthday_ice3.gif

Professor Booty here, with some quick reporting from my undisclosed location somewhere in Italy.

Why Italy, you may ask; because I needed to pick up some very special wine for a Thanksgiving party I’m going to.

But Professor, why not just grab some of the very good American or Australian wines?

You’ve heard of ‘Virgin Wool’? Well, this is ‘Virgin Wine’.

I have never seen a vineyard owner keep such a close eye on me after he found out who I was. Although I suppose it is understandable seeing as how I could have ruined his entire businees in a day or two.

The Holiday Season

Tomorrow is National Ammo Day

NAD2_thumb.jpg

But you already knew this, right?

Anyway, you know the drill: Buy a minimum of 100rnds of ammo and have a good time doing it.

And if you’re up for a really good time, be at your local WalMart at 1330PST and buy as much ammo as you can possibly afford along with the most provacative gun movie you can find in the store. Make sure you take it to the ammo counter with you and be conspicuous about it.

I’ll probably be going with the 80’s classic, ‘Red Dawn’. But if I can find ‘The Dogs of War’ or ‘The Wild Geese’, I’ll buy two and give one away here.

Eastbound and Down

Any balls I may have attributed to Bush gathering up on the domestic front disappeared into his deficit on the international front.

South Korea Plans to Withdraw One-Third of Troops From Iraq

This isn’t set in stone yet, but in his military appropriations request next year, Roh is going to sell this plan to his legislature and it’ll probably happen.

Unless a message is sent.

You leave us and we will reciprocate.

What exactly are we doing in South Korea other than representing the tripwire for a growingly ungrateful population? We have what, a total of 28 or so bases there? Do we really need them all?

How about this, we take one-third of our soldiers out of those bases and see what Roh wants to do?

Let’s see, that would be Camp Gary Owen, Camp Page, Camp Giant, Camp Castle, Camp Bonifas, Camp Hovey, Camp Nimble, Camp Greaves and Camp Casey (not Sheehan’s farce, the real one).

So we now have seven to eight thousand troops not doing anthing because they’ve been magically freed up. What to do with them? I know, give them three months off and then rotate them to where the Koreans left.

Oh, and we’ll have to do it during the winter so that the South Koreans can watch their wargames go to hell while their border is a solid mass and easily crossed from the north.

Problem solved.

They may be teachers

But they’ll never learn.

To be able to graduate from the public school system here in Washington State, you need to pass a series of tests we call the WASL (Washington Assessment of Student Learning) before you finish your senior year in high school.

Now read these two opening sentences from this report by the local CBS media outlet,

The high failure rate among high school students taking the state’s high-stakes assessment test is spurring the state’s top school official to push for a new $42 million summer school program.

This year’s sophomores are the first class to face strict new graduation requirements, and if past performance is a good predictor, about half of them will fail at least one part of the Washington Assessment of Student Learning on their first try.

Sounds scary, huh? Well, it’s not.

These kids have a full three years to pass these WASL tests. The tests ask questions at the 10th grade level in all subjects, so you would figure that some of the students might not pass it their first time around.

But they get the rest of their sophmore year AND their whole junior and senior years in school to pass and the tests are given up to four times every year, depending on the district. So theoretically, these kids will have twelve chances over a period of three years to pass.

Yet the fright mongers are out in force to try and get their hands on some of the money that seems to flow like beer out of some sort of bottomless keg from Olympia.

If the students aren’t passing their first time around, all it shows is where the kid needs more improvement. You get him/her into an extra couple of classes that year so that they can improve their skills and them give them the test again.

Spending $42 million on a summer school program is totally unnecessary to help him/her out. The classes during the regular school year are what the kid needs. Not tutors, not new books and definitely not an overly expensive summer school program. Money spent does not equate to high test scores and I don’t know how long it is going to take the teacher’s unions and the ‘please waste my money ‘ public to understand that.

I just hope they learn quickly, since this quote shows that the kids aren’t,

“We can’t hide the fact that we gave diplomas last year to kids who couldn’t readâ€?

Now, I voted for Terry Bergeson, the Superintendent of Public Instruction who daid the above line, in the 2004 election, but she never mentioned this cockamamey idea to waste my tax money. Frankly, I can’t say that she had much competition. Her opponent wanted to dump the WASL altogether and waste my tax money to fight the NoChildLeftBehind laws in federal court.
