Playing the press

Back with some more info on the weekend happening at the Tacoma Mall.

To start, it has been released that Maldonado called the local 911 call center on his cell phone right before entering the mall and opening fire. After telling the call receiver what he was going to do, they asked where he was going to do this, he replied

“Just follow the screams

In contrast to all this, the now inmate Maldonado says that he didn’t mean to shoot anyone and was surprised when he was told that he actually hit six people.

Maldonado has been charged with four counts of kidnapping and eight counts of first-degree assault, instead of what I would think would be more appropriate attempted murder, and is being held on $2 Million bail.

According to a Farnham’s Quips link I found at the Heartless Libertarian’s place (he also has some more links on the story), it has been confirmed that Maldonado did have an AK but started firing with a badly maintained 9mm CZ pistol and switched to the AK only after a very brave individual attempted to stop him with physical force and was shot four times by Maldonado and the CZ malfunctioned.

The man who attempted to disarm Maldonado is the person who is in critical condition at a local hospital.

It is unconfirmed whether Maldonado actually hit anyone with rounds from the AK.

Every Marine a Rifleman

Some very good news from the USMC

The U.S. Marine Corps is raising the training standards for its personnel, by making it mandatory that everyone go through a more intensive weapons training program each year. Until recently, every marine had to pass a pretty basic shooting test each year. Now everyone will get a test similar to the one every recruit has to pass in boot camp. This includes shooting in combat type situations. Failure to meet minimum qualifications in this weapons test can get you booted out of the marines.

The marines are tightening up combat skills training for the same reason the army, and even the air force, have been doing so. Experience in Afghanistan and Iraq has made it clear that during wars against irregulars and terrorists, everyone in uniform may find themselves in combat situations. The army was the first to get caught by lack of preparedness in this area. Army support troops had let their combat training slide over the last decade. Thus army support troops often found themselves fatally unprepared when they ran into a combat situations over the last few years. Marine support personnel had far fewer problems in this area, as the marines always maintained higher combat training standards for non-combat troops. But the new rifle training routine is intended to raise those combat skill levels even higher.

RNS Quote of the Day

The ‘practical’ justification of capitalism does not lie in the collectivist claim that it effects “the best allocation of natural resources. Man is not a ‘national resource’ and neither is his mind. Without the creative power of man’s intelligence, raw materials would remain just so many useless raw materials.

Waiting on more information

Yesterday saw a shooting and hostage situation at the city of Tacoma’s largest center of public commerce, the Tacoma Mall.

A lone 20yr old man walked into the mall armed with a rifle and fired approximately 20 rounds, wounding six people, one of which is still in Tacoma General Hospital in critical condition. He then took a half dozen people hostage in the Sam Goody music store and held them there for a few hours.

At around 1600PST he released the hostages and surrendered.

The media is going apeshit with this story, and not just in a bad way: There is, of course, the standard “The Armed Gunman talk, like there is any other kind of gunman, and they keep saying that the guy had an AK47, although the authorities have yet to confirm that.

The guy’s name has been released as being Dominick Maldonado who has an extensive criminal past, including multiple juvenile convictions for crimes such as burglary and possible gang ties. The local news stations have also interviewed Maldonado’s former girlfriend and acquaintances whom he text messaged and called on his mobile phone during the stand-off. They are saying that Maldonado was not exactly what you might call ‘mentally stable’, which I would have gathered as well after reading crap like this that he sent out,

“The world will feel my anger.”

The ‘Hate America’ crowd has a party

Today marks the last day of a three day event held by Amnesty International in London, where they gathered together a large number of supposed former prisoners from Gitmo who claimed to have been ‘tortured’ there.

In some cases, the ‘tortured’ former captive couldn’t attend and so AI brought in their families to help with the exaggerations. Maybe if the former prisoners weren’t out fighting US troops again, they could have shown up. But hey, I wouldn’t want to be hanging out in London with a bunch of socialist stiffs either, so I understand.

From AI’s press release,

Amnesty International and Reprieve today called on the US government to stop blocking meaningful United Nations access to its Guantanamo detention centre and agree to access to all prisoners. The organisations (sic) were responding to the passing of a midnight deadline for the US government to agree to terms for a visit to Guantanamo by five independent experts of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights.

AI, the UN and the group Reprieve! It’s a trifecta of prevarication!

Mystery Solved?

The willfully ignorant enviro-nuts have been complaining about the numbers of salmon either staying stagnant or decreasing, depending on the location under observation.

They’d like to blame it on the damming of rivers or commercial fishing operations, but there is an answer to the problem that they don’t want to add to the equation,

Hunters in the U.S. Northwest used to slaughter sea lions, sometimes with machine guns, to sell to glue factories or to send their dried penises to China as an aphrodisiac.

That changed when Congress passed the 1972 Marine Mammals Protection Act outlawing the hunting or exporting of California sea lions and harbor seals. Since then, the number of sea lions on the U.S. West Coast where they live have climbed nearly 60 percent to about 300,000, according to the National Marine Fishery Service. Harbor seals are also more numerous

While individual sea lions and seals don’t take as many fish as a commercial operation, they absolutely take more than any private fisherman is allowed to, and when you have over a quarter-million of the animals eating half their weight in salmon every day, it has a tendency to add up, or should I say, subtract from the numbers of returning fish, especially when the predators don’t go after the ‘sick and weak’ but the prime adults.

Both the enviros and the state and federal Depts. Of Fish and Game refuse to acknowledge this or even consider that maybe, we should look at hunting these animals again, now that their numbers are up.

Lazy Bigots

They caused a kerfuffle when they requested and were allowed to ‘adopt’ a stretch of road to keep clean of litter.

As of today, they have proven themselves truly worthless.

The American Nazi Party has lost its litter control sponsorship of a stretch of local road after it failed to clean it up.

The white supremacist group caused widespread public concern in January after Marion County officials allowed it to ‘adopt’ a stretch of road and post its name on road signs as part of a litter-control program.

Maybe their arms were just sore from doing the Hitler salute?

Nat’l Ammo Day – Silent Reprise

I did my part

PB200003.JPG

As I made my way to my local Wal.Mart, I set in my mind that I was going to buy as much .380ACP and .45ACP in the White Box Value Packs as I could and then round the dollar amount up with whatever 22LR they had in-stock.

I first went to the DVD section on my way to the back counter and found both of my celluloid selections. Then I hit the ammo counter.

You remember my plan? Well, it went all to hell.

My excuse is that I am still gathering my equipment so as to start reloading .308Win for Barak but time, money and shipping times have decided that I will be waiting until after Christmas (BTW, if you have the urge to want to get me something for Christmas, I’ll direct you to my MidwayUSA wishlist).

Ergo, I am a bit low on ammo for Barak and finding his favorite food, the 168gr Sierra HPBT match ammo, from most of my online sources is becoming difficult and the places that do have it want a premium for it. And forget his second favorite, the 155gr Sierra.

So imagine my surprise when Wally World had a case of it!

So, in total, I bought the Renton, Washington Wal-Mart (locally known as Mogadishu-Mart) out of their Federal Gold Medal Match .308Win and also their entire stock of .380ACP, which I was also getting dangerously low on. The 22LR additions were because the store actually had them in-stock instead of just the Remington boxes of 525 that the 10/22 refuses to eat and the 22/45 barely gets by with.

So I guess my 2005 Ammo Day was more quality over quantity or possibly just sheer desperation.

In what could be considered good news/bad news, the “Sporting Goods department (as the sign says) was just plain too busy for the girl to even notice my choice in movies or care about what I was going to do with 200 rounds of match grade .308. One guy was buying a new shotgun and then there were two guys in front of me in line at the counter and three behind me with a fourth showing up when I grabbed my bags and walked off.

All in all, a very good day indeed.

Let the Gun Guy know what you did here so that he can keep track of the round count.
