RNS Quote of the Day and Paraphrasing

It is morally obscene to regard wealth as an anonymous tribal product and to talk about “redistributing it. The view that wealth is the result of some undifferentiated, collective process, that we all did something and it is impossible to tell who did what, therefore some sort of equalitarian “distribution is necessary – might have been appropriate in a primordial jungle with a savage horde moving boulders by crude physical labor (though even there someone had to initiate and organize the moving). To hold the view in an industrial society – is so crass an evasion that even to give it the benefit of the doubt is an obscenity.

—————

It was suggested in the comments of yesterday’s QotD that some paraphrasing be done for Ms. Rand’s quotes that appear here due to her insistence upon using every little bit of her knowledge of the english vocabulary when she spoke.

Aside from the fact that I believe that I have some of the most intelligent readers in the sphere stopping by RNS (and I’m not just kissing your collective asses when I say that because I don’t pull that crap), I also believe that her words can stand on their own so long as those whose intellectual areas don’t include vast vocabularies keeps a dictionary handy.

But because I think it might be what the wife calls ‘A Hoot’, I’ll give it a shot for a while. But don’t expect any kindness towards the subjects of her high-fallutin vernacular scorn.

So, today’s Rand QotD translation is as follows:

It is disgusting that commiepinkorats can get away with publically saying that the money I work for is as much some booger eatin’ moh-ron’s who sits around all day with his thumb up his ass as it is mine. Their opinion of “Each According to Their Needsâ€? where those who refuse to gather marketable skills or even hold down a job should be given the same luxuries I work for simply because they were birthed may have worked when humans were hunter gatherers and had to band together to survive (although someone had to get up the balls to leave the caves and go look for food). To hold this view when an infinite amount of opportunity sits within the grasp of every man and woman is so gag-inducing that to actually speak it should cause their tongues to turn black.

So, how’d I do?

Needle for One

Well, Stanley ‘Tookie’ Williams felt cold steel this morning and hopefully his novelty celebrity will go with him.

After all the ruminations and lamentations for and against putting him down for the good of society I have come away with a couple observations and kept one deep seated belief:

My observations were that while he had said that he redeemed himself, he never publicly admitted his guilt. I’m sure that some left-wing head-shrinker has come up with an explanation on how you can be redeemed without admitting guilt, but I won’t believe it.

All over the talk radio spectrum there were right, left and middle of the road hosts discussing this topic. One of the talking points I heard over and over from the liberal anti-death penalty types was the Sermon on the Mount and other biblical anti-death penalty references.

How ironic that the vast majority of these folks support the ACLU and their fight against public displays of Christianity, but when it comes to the death penalty, they’re the first that demand the government follow the bible. Besides that, they should read Ecclesiastes at least once before spouting off.

I haven’t brought this up in the recent past and will therefore probably shock most, but I have a deep-seated belief that the state has no right to take your life.

Yes, we have empowered the state with keeping the peace by giving them the power of policing and to follow up with the handing down of civil and criminal judgments that our societal contract requires us to follow. But I think we have gone too far in empowering the state with the ability to sentence criminals who are found guilty of certain crimes in a court of law to death.

You do not want the government to have the power to take your property and give it to someone else to develop because they can deliver more tax dollars, in the case of the Kelo decision or to impound your property in the case of a failure to pay taxes, so why would you give them the power to take your life just because twelve of your fellow citizens gave them the thumbs up? Yes, our continued voluntary residence in those sections of the society that allow the death penalty are a contract of acceptance of that punishment, but that doesn’t make it right.

All that being said, I do not think we should abolish the death penalty altogether because there are some crimes that absolutely warrant a person’s permanent removal from society in a way that ‘Life in Prison Without Parole’ do not cover.

So, if you’ll allow me to split some hairs here,

RNS Quote of the Day

Observe how seldom and how inadequately the issue of human intelligence is discussed in the writings of the tribal-statist-altruist theoreticians. Observe how carefully today’s advocates of a mixed economy avoid and evade any mention of intelligence or ability in their approach to politico-economic issues in their claim, demands and pressure group warfare over the looting of “The Total Social Product.

The Soundboard – Tribute

As you all know, Richard Pryor passed away this weekend. There are a number very good and kind things that have been written about him throughout the blogosphere that say more about him than I could. Two of them that I would like to point out for you to read are from Captain Ed and Roger L Simon.

If you remember the very early VCRs on the market in the late 70’s / early 80’s and their tank-like yet fragile structure may remember Mr. Pryor’s arrival on the VHS and Beta marketplace.

Back then, my dad had some business dealings that included a video rental store. This allowed him to have any movie on the market that he wanted for his personal collection. One of the first that I remember was Richard Pryor’s “Live on the Sunset Strip. I remember him laughing his ass off downstairs while watching it after sending me off to bed one night, but it didn’t take long for me to secure the tape while he was out and watch it for myself.

I don’t know that I laughed so hard in my life up until then, and I was only 11 or 12 and probably didn’t get more than half of the bits.

After that, I made sure to find every Pryor comedy tape he brought home and watch it. One of his best characters and my personal favorite was ‘Mudbone’. The stories that came out of that character were simply the best and I am going to share one with you today.

Little Feets – Richard Pryor

This NSFW bit came off of Richard Pryor’s 1975 album ‘Is it something I said?’ which you can purchase here, and I recommend you do.. It was recorded live at the The Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, NJ.

Thanks and so long Mr. Pryor.

RNS Quote of the Day — Metallica Reads Ben Franklin!

I observed on one of the drums belonging to the Marines… that there was painted a rattlesnake, with this modest motto under it, ‘Don’t tread on me.’ It occurred to me that the rattlesnake, being found in no other quarter of the world besides America, might therefore be chosen to represent her. Having frequently seen the rattlesnake, I ran over in my mind every property by which she was distingushed. I recollect that her eye excelled in brightness, that of any other animal, and that she has no eye-lids. She may therefore be esteemed an emblem of vigilance. She never begins an attack, nor, when once engaged, ever surrenders; she is therefore an emblem of magnanimity and true courage. …[she] never wounds till she has generously given notice, even to her enemy, and cautioned him against the danger of treading on her. …She strongly resembles America in this, that she is beautiful in youth and her beauty increaseth with her age, ‘her tongue also is blue and forked as the lightning, and her abode is among impenetrable rocks.’

–Benjamin Franklin, letter to the Pennsylvania Journal, Dec. 27, 1775, from The Compleated Autobiography (Mark Skousen, ed.) pp. 112-113.

What do you mean the weekend is half over?

Damn, Sunday got here quick! Oh well, good food and lots of activities have a tendency to do that to a guy.

Speaking of lots of activites, you can picture me hanging Christmas lights and trimming the tree today because that is what I’ll be doing.

If you’ve got some time, Joe of The View From North Central Idaho Blog and Boomershoot fame has a request that we actually give a hand to Washington Ceasefire by taking their poll (second box down on the right side). Since I have a fairly decent contingent of Washington State readers, take a second and go here to help this anti-gun group answer this question,

“How serious do you think handgun violence is in Washington?”

I’m not going to tell you how to vote as I know that you all can think for yourselves, but take a look at the possible answers and vote how you feel. You folks from outside Washington can vote as well, because if there were a handgun violence problem here in Washington, you’d know by our nationwide record breaking crime statistics.

Since we don’t have those kind of stats and the only places that do also have draconian gun control laws like the ones Washington Ceasefire wants to get enacted, I think you can figure out which way to vote as well. BTW, our side is currently leading in that poll, but we could always use more votes.

Once you’ve done that, you should go on over to Gullyborg’s Resistance is Futile Blog and catch the last Carnival of Cordite for the year. It’s a doozy with loads of gunny goodness.

And last but not least, swing on over to this actually decent LA Times article on the Bugatti Veyron 16/4 that I found at Knowledge is Power.

bugatti.jpg

If it looks fast, that’s because it is, with a record setting factory top speed of over 250mph.

FYI, for those who don’t already know, the 16 in the model name stands for the 16 cylinder engine and the 4 is for the number of turbos attached to the intake/exhaust system of said engine, helping it create close to 1000hp, with a 0-60 of 2.1 seconds, a 0-200 in 20 seconds and a maxing out at 253mph in just under a minute.

Make sure you read into the last section of the article (past the stuff about VW’s Piech) and read what they had to do to get the car to go above 225.

I’ve been reading about this car and its various changes in bodystyle and powerplant, among other things, for years and it finally looks as if I’ll be able to get a look at it. My big question is how they are managing the forced air question.

Multi-turboed cars have the problem (albeit a minor one) of losing cylinder pressure between when one turbo (or set of turbos) spin down and the other one(s) spin up. For instance, the Toyota Supra TT lost 12-16lbs of pressure and the Nissan 300ZX TT lost 8-12lbs between turbo cycles. Not really a major detail, but if you don’t watch out, you can easily get caught in the difference, possibly leading weird/harrowing cornering situations, especially in a car with independent rear suspension (if you want to hear more about this, email me and I’ll bore you for a few paragraphs). I want to know how the system on the Bugatti works and none of the writings available on the car will tell me if they’re running simultaneous or sequential or the make/model/size/etc of the turbos the Bugatti is using. I know VW is behind all of this and I know who they like to use, but I can’t see that manufacturer making something this potent. Minor details, I know, but these are the questions that make me, me.

More Fun In The Snow

With Professor Booty.

avatar78763_6.gif

As I mentioned yesterday, my students come from far and wide and a goodly number of them have never seen snow live and in person. They’ve seen it in movies and on the television, but that is about it.

Seeing as how these girls have international modeling aspirations, they need to be instructed on what I like to call ‘Snow Etiquette’, for they never know when they might get an assignment where they will be called upon to be snow bunnies.

I basically get the girls who have snow experience and pair them up with one who has none. Unfortunately, due to OTI management concerns about legal liability, I have had to discontinue the topless snowball fight instruction that used to conclude each class. Frostbite on the exposed extremities can be an ugly thing, even though I never had a single case during my time here (the secret to my success in that arena had been to schedule Hottubbing Class directly afterwards).

But we still have a good time. For example, here is one of my exchange students, Ms. Wasinagi from Okinawa, trying to learn to make snow angels. It took a few attempts, but she eventually got it down.

I’ll be back with more holiday shenanigans next week. See you all then.

The Weekend Is Upon Me

And here I am, under Doctor’s Orders to avoid spending long periods of time outside.

I was able to work this whole week after my bout with pneumonia last week, though Monday and Tuesday were nearly unbearable. I had significant improvement on Wednesday and am almost normal now this morning, with just a moderate cough residing in me.

I went to the physician this morning hoping that she could tell that I had gotten better so that I could be cleared to go to the range this weekend. No such luck. “Try back in two weeks was her answer. I need warm, moist air to finish recovering and all the outdoors can offer me is cold, dry air that’ll send me back into the hell of drowning in my own lungs.

That’ll make it a month without a range trip! I might as well just throw my ammo down the sewer drain since I’ll probably need a couple dozen trigger pulls to get back up to speed when I do finally get back to the range.

Today I’ll be going to a pre-Christmas family get-together that the Analog Mom is hosting this afternoon and then I have nothing to do for the rest of the weekend except help the wife decorate the house.

But only the inside! Doctor’s Orders say that I can’t hang lights off the eaves for at least another two weeks!

Have a good one folks! Not that I get enough traffic to warrant it, but consider this post a link dump/open thread and I’ll see y’all tomorrow.

Memememememe

Barb from Righty in a Lefty State Blog dropped a meme on me, to list my five wierd habits, hence the title of this post.

So here we go:

1. I am meticulous about the cleanliness of my work desk, but hell will freeze over before I clean off the Blogstation RNS Seattle desk at my home.

I always have way too many things to do at work to be disorganized, whereas at home, I can slack as much as I want.

2. I am also meticulous about the cleanliness of my firearms. If I have nothing else to do, I go find a rifle or pistol with a speck of dust on it and tear it down. I cannot think of a time when my general purpose carry piece 1911 has never been completely torn down to be cleaned.

This stems from the frequent dreams I have of weapons failing; guns jamming, edged weapons getting stuck in whatever I made contact with. Most folks would call these nightmares, but I think they’re just there to remind me where my cleaning solvent and sharpening stones are at.

3. I usually wash my hands a minimum of once every half hour.

I don’t know how common this is, but my sweat is adhesive. On a hot day when I’m active, I can literally pick up my cellphone with a flat palm. I works nice for controlling a pistol and I’ve never dropped a mag during a change, but it makes my fingers stick together in a very annoying way when I’m doing just about anything else, especially typing.

4. Before I can lock a door I need to have the keys to said door in my hands and I need to look at them.

I’ve locked myself out of places I wanted to be one too many times in the past.

5. I am a recycle freak.

I work in the industry and I know what a complete myth recycling is, but nonetheless, I sort everything. Always have. Drives the wife nuts when she sees me pulling recyclables out of the trash toter. I love cutting boxes down so that I can get more into the bin. When the wife got her new TV, I spent ten minutes cutting the big ass box it came in down to around sixteen pieces that would fit in the toter.

And now, who to give this to?

Since he thought this would be interesting for me to do it, I’m tossing it to he who mans Blogstation RNS San Francisco, David.
