You may not remember her name, but you probably remember Patricia Konie as the lady who was slammed to the ground and had her gun stolen from her by authorities as they forcibly removed from her home “For Her Own Good (video here) during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Well, she’s filed suit:

A New Orleans woman is recovering from surgery this week from injuries resulting from when she was roughed-up by authorities who forced her to leave her home a week after Hurricane Katrina. Patricia Konie, 58, has filed a Federal lawsuit over the injuries and other violations of civil rights.

“My client was severely injured in a needless removal from her home,” stated attorney Ashton O’Dwyer. “Patricia Konie had food, plenty of water, and a roof over her head. The police who illegally entered her home and imposed their will on a frail, middle-aged female should have been out apprehending armed, male looters instead.”

Konie was greeting a reporter and photographer from a San Francisco TV station and a journalist from the London Times when police unexpectedly entered her home. When she refused to leave as ordered, they confiscated a firearm used for defense and according to Konie, “slammed” her to the ground, both displacing and fracturing her left shoulder.

After remaining in custody for several hours without charges being filed against her by authorities, she was flown alone to South Carolina where she remained for more than a month before returning to her native New Orleans.

A Federal lawsuit was filed claiming that authorities assaulted and knocked her to the ground when she refused to leave her New Orleans home on September 7th, 2005. Konie also alleges numerous civil rights violations including assault and battery by police in her suit against several Louisiana and California State Police officers who took her into custody. She also alleges authorities violated her Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.

There is no word of a fund to donate to so that Second Amendment supporters can help her with legal costs, but if that comes out, I’ll forward that on.

Speaking of Pro-Second Amendment cases, Jason of the FishOrMan blog has won his open carry case in Ellensburg, Washington

The bottom line is I WON MY APPEAL against the conviction of “warranting alarm” for open carrying a handgun in the city of Ellensburg.

Yeah, that’s right. The Ellensburg case is dismissed, conviction over-turned. The city code was ruled inconsistent with the state version and preemption applied. The law was repealed!

He did this without any support of any of the 2A groups either locally or nationally and just a few monetary donations from the blogosphere. While I may not agree with his views of LEOs, this is great news and I congratulate him on making the gov’t have to back off, at least temporarily.

Smooth Move, Exlax

So now it comes out that some branch of the Iraqi security forces may have caught Zarqawi last year, but didn’t recognize him and let him go.

Not the best PR story out there, but shit like this happens.

On the ever vomit inducing Daily Kos, newly minted front page Kos Kid ‘georgia10’ says,

“You’d think part of that training Bush claims so many Iraqi battalions have received would include maybe showing them Zarqawi’s picture, hell, even using it as target practice.â€?

I just love it when lefties try to talk tough!

US military personnel aren’t even allowed to put women’s underwear on the heads of prisoners as a gag. Imagine if the newsmedia reported that we’re using pictures of living humans to train the Iraqis. Even if the pictures were of Zarqawi, they’d write stories about how we need to apologize to al Qaida and the Democrats would be demanding that we lower the bounty on his head as a sort of fig leaf for teaching the Iraqis to be ‘killing machines’,

Hanoi Jane already says that about our own soldiers so the stretch wouldn’t be too difficult for the Dems.

I don’t know what to think of this one. It sounds more like Objectivism to me, but I’ll take it.

You scored as Existentialist. Existentialism emphasizes human capability. There is no greater power interfering with life and thus it is up to us to make things happen. Sometimes considered a negative and depressing world view, your optimism towards human accomplishment is immense. Mankind is condemned to be free and must accept the responsibility.

RNS Quote of the Day

Observe the nature of today’s alleged peace movements. Professing love and concern for the survival of mankind, they keep screaming that the nuclear weapons race should be stopped, that armed force should be abolished as a means of settling disputes among nations and that war should be outlawed in the name of humanity.

Yet these same peace movements do not oppose dictatorships; the political views of their members range through all shades of the statist spectrum, from welfare statism to socialism to fascism to communism. This means that they are opposed to the use of coercion by one nation against another, but not by the government of a nation against its own citizens; it means that they are opposed to the use of force against armed adversaries, but not against the disarmed.

Ayn Rand: The Roots of War – 1966

—————

Today’s paraphrase:

Leftists are a bunch of stinking hypocrites.

Their definition of peace is everyone being subservient to them at the point of a gun.

Blanco tells Congress that New Orleans deserves same as Baghdad

Oh really?

So she would have no complaints if the USMC and US Army:

1. Disbanded the city’s nearly useless police force and held those positions in the interim

2. Arrested NO’s ‘Talking Loud, But Ain’t Saying Nothing’ leader and all of his henchmen and cronies and then put them on trial for incompetence and ‘negligent manslaughter’ as the left wants Bush tried

3. Held elections for new city leadership

4. Later held a vote on a new city charter

5. Simultaneously rebuild the city’s crumbled and out of date infrastructure and constabulary from the ground up?

Works for me!

The Soundboard: More Christmas Tunage

I hope you’re ready for bagpipes and fiddles!

Come All Ye Faithful

I’m holding back a bit here with the tunage getting more festive as we get closer to the holiday itself. Try this one on for size. Don’t let the pipes scare you, they’re quite becoming of a cold wintery night by the fire with some hot cider and a good book and/or a friend.

And they call me Cold Hearted

Actually, they call me ‘Cold, Mean, Heartless and Cruel’ but I think that it would be more aptly applied to these people.

Bystanders ignore plight of burning homeless man

Vancouver BC, Canada — St. Paul’s emergency nurse Christine Wellstead has seen some pretty rough things on the job, but nothing has shaken her as much as the callous indifference she witnessed Monday night as bystanders ignored an unconscious homeless man wrapped in a burning comforter.

Wellstead was on her way home from work around 10:30 p.m. when she stopped at Starbucks at 19th and Cambie for a coffee. Smelling smoke, she walked outside to see what was burning, but all she could see was a woman sitting at an outside table, talking calmly on her phone as clouds of smoke rolled past her. “She’s on her cellphone, having her coffee and she’s sitting amongst this acrid smoke,” she said.

Looking further, Wellstead found a man slumped on a bench in a nearby alcove on the side street, wrapped in a comforter that was on fire. “It was smouldering, and it was by his face,” she said. “It was all orange, and there was smoke. I threw the blanket on the ground and tried to wake him up, but he didn’t wake up.”

She ran back into Starbucks for water to put out the fire, and that’s when she got a real shock. She said another woman customer standing at the counter told her: “Just leave him alone, he’s a homeless person,” Wellstead recalled. “I looked at her and I said, ‘What are you talking about?’ and she says, ‘He’s homeless, just forget it.'”

Appalled, Wellstead rushed back out with water to douse the fire and still couldn’t wake the man, so she ran inside again and asked a barista to call for help. “I said, ‘You’d better call an ambulance, because I can’t wake him up,’ and the lady [customer] said, ‘Don’t call the hospital, they don’t want him,’ and I just looked at her, and I said, ‘I work at the hospital and yeah, we want him.'”

Now, there’s no love lost between myself and ‘The Homeless’. I personally believe that 99% of bums choose to live like that, either unwilling to live up to society’s standards or give up their self destructive habits like alcohol or drugs or both.

But damn, if I saw a bum on fire, you bet your ass I’d try to keep him or her from being turned into a crispy critter.

Socialism at work folks.

RNS Quote of the Day

While altruism seeks to rob intelligence of its rewards by asserting that the moral duty of the competent is to serve the incompetent and sacrifice themselves to anyone’s need – the tribal premise goes a step further: it denies the existence of intelligence and of its role in the production of wealth.

Ayn Rand: What is Capitalism – 1965

—————

And here we go with today’s paraphrase:

Even though Democrats try to take more and more money from those smart enough to make a good life for themselves by saying that it is their responsibility to support lazy bastards simply because they have a heartbeat, socialists are even worse because they won’t admit that working to better yourself is smarter than just subsisting off the teat of the state.

And that is all for quotes from the essay “What is Capitalism. Tomorrow we’ll lead off into the weekend with the first quote from the essay “The Roots of War, which I think we’ll all enjoy.

Wuthering Height

I think I work in an office of short people.

There is no worry about someone crying about Christmas decorations in our offices and the folks who work in the daytime are going like gangbusters to show off how much they can decorate. My only problem is that I’m 6’7 in my work boots and these folks have no sense of what happens there when the sun goes down or some such affliction.

Yesterday was tinsel day. I know this because when I arrived at my secondary office near the end of the workday, there are multiple strands of tinsel strung across the walls in the long, and somewhat narrow workspace we all occupy. My desk is at the back of that workspace and I now have a gauntlet of low hanging clothesline like tinsel to duck and dodge in order to get to my terminal to work. Someone under the height of 5’10 would not have a problem. But I’m screwed.

I haven’t seen most of the folks who work during the day in a while. I may have to arrive at work early this afternoon to reacquaint myself with them and to see if maybe we hired a bunch of gnomes and no one bothered to tell me. I’ll give out subtle hints about their décor until I get the “Oh my, those are quite low, aren’t they? response, at which time I’ll ask if they want me to ‘reaffix’ their tinsel a tad bit higher later that night.

I’m willing to spend a few minutes of company time avoiding the possibility of “Wrestling with the Silver Octopus” on some random morning when I forget to watch where I’m walking.

The Defogger

We’ve been getting a lot of fog here in the last couple weeks in the Seattle Metro area. While I was down with the pneumonia there were two days when it just never left. 1500 in the afternoon and it was pea soupy enough I couldn’t see up my street. We’ve also been getting some cold nights.

Last night was the best of both worlds. Or worst, depending on your mindset.

The fog set in for the night around 2100. By midnight, you had to put your wipers on low relay to keep your windshield clear enough to see out of. By 0200, spending more than a couple minutes just standing in it meant that I had to get out a Kleenex and wipe my glasses off and make sure to shake as much of the condensation off my coat as possible when I re-entered the building.

As I was leaving work at 0400, the cold snapped. I work at sea level and live about 400 feet above it. My whole trip home was marked by black ice and fog thick enough to make traffic signals very short notice items. We’re talking 50 feet of warning as to whether the light was red or green. If you got one of the newer LED signals, you might have gotten an extra 25 feet of warning, but not much more.

I know I am not a sadist because only a sadist would listen to this mornings traffic reports. Me, I’ve got other stuff to do.
